Exotic Dance in Baltimore: From Entry to STI/HIV Risk.

Research has documented health risks associated with sex work, but few U.S. studies have focused on the exotic dance industry. We undertook this study to describe the factors that influenced women's entry into exotic dance and explored the relation of these forces to their subsequent sexually transmitted infection (STI)/HIV risk trajectory. Qualitative interviews (N = 25) were conducted with female exotic dancers from June through August 2009. Data were analyzed through Atlas-ti using an inductive approach. Economic vulnerability was the primary force behind women's initiation into the profess

The quest for living-related kidney donors for children with end-stage renal disease.

In a pediatric renal transplant program that actively seeks living-related kidney donors, we achieved a living donor rate of 55% in 119 children. This approximates the national average but is less than an idealized goal. For black children, the living-donor transplant rate was 41%, a disconcertingly low rate. In an attempt to define factors that negatively affected living-related donor availability, we analyzed our evaluation process by distinct phases (interview, histocompatibility testing and medical evaluation). We classified our families on the basis of locale (urban, suburban and rural),

Socio-Economic Determinants of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Rupture Incidence: A Nationwide Geospatial Study.

OBJECTIVE: The impact of socio-economic factors on abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) rupture are poorly understood at a geospatial level, but they are important considerations in the targeted distribution of preventive resources such as screening and treatment. This study aimed to map the nationwide geospatial distribution of AAA ruptures in Aotearoa New Zealand and to analyse associations with socio-economic factors. METHODS: A nationwide, retrospective, geospatial analysis of all AAA ruptures between January 2000 and December 2019 in Aotearoa New Zealand was performed using national registry …

Leapfrogging toward Sustainability: The role of renewable energy, energy imports, and debt on Pakistan's carbon emissions.

This study investigates the impact of key economic and energy-related factors on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in Pakistan from 1990 to 2021. Specifically, our study fills a research gap by analyzing how energy imports, external public debt, renewable energy consumption and economic growth influence carbon emissions. Employing ARDL and dynamic simulation models, this study assesses long-term and short-term relationship among the variables. Our findings reveal that in short run, energy imports, external public debt and economic growth significantly increase CO2 emissions, whereas renewable ene

Impact of ethnicity and socio-economic status on Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia incidence and mortality: a heavy burden in Indigenous Australians.

BACKGROUND: Investigations of the impact of ethnicity and socio-economic status on incidence and outcomes of Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia are limited. METHODS: We prospectively identified all S. aureus bacteraemia episodes in the Australian New Zealand Cooperative on Outcomes in Staphylococcal Sepsis cohort study between 2007 and 2010. We calculated population level incidence rates using regional postcodes and stratified the analysis by ethnicity, age and socio-economic status indexes. RESULTS: There were 7539 episodes of S. aureus bacteraemia with an annual incidence of 11·2 episodes p

Ecological variation in self-injury behavior.

Only recently have efforts been made to discover the extent of self-injury behavior in the general population. The study reported here was designed to ascertain and examine the degree of relationship between the ecological distribution of self-injury behavior and the indices of economic and ethnic status. The general hypothesis predicts that high rates of self-injury behavior are associated with low economic status and high ethnic status census tract populations in a northern metropolitan area. A total of 2,755 cases of self-injury were collected for the year 1972 from the records of the city

Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and previous pandemics, epidemics and economic crises on mental health: systematic review.

BACKGROUND: A rise in mental illness is expected to follow the COVID-19 pandemic, which has also been projected to lead to a deep global economic recession, further adding to risk factors. AIMS: The aim of this review was to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and previous pandemics, epidemics and economic crises on mental health. METHOD: Searches were conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO and Sociological Abstracts. We included studies of all populations exposed to the COVID-19 pandemic, and other similar pandemics/epidemics and economic crises, compared with non-exposed time

Increasing socio-economic inequalities in drug-induced deaths in Australia: 1981-2002.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Since the 1990s illicit drug use death rates in Australia have increased markedly. There is a notable gap in knowledge about changing socio-economic inequalities in drug use death rates. Some limited Australian and overseas data point to higher rates of drug death in the lowest socio-economic groups, but the paucity of available studies and their sometimes conflicting findings need to be addressed. DESIGN AND METHODS: This paper uses data obtained from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) to examine changes in age-standardised drug-induced mortality rates for Austr

Association of socio-economic deprivation with COVID-19 incidence and fatality during the first wave of the pandemic in Italy: lessons learned from a local register-based study.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has been characterised by its global and rapid spread, with high infection, hospitalisation, and mortality rates worldwide. However, the course of the pandemic showed differences in chronology and intensity in different geographical areas and countries, probably due to a multitude of factors. Among these, socio-economic deprivation has been supposed to play a substantial role, although available evidence is not fully in agreement. Our study aimed to assess incidence and fatality rates of COVID-19 across the levels of socio-economic deprivation during the first epidemic wav

Measuring sustainable consumer food purchasing and behavior.

Consumer food purchasing and willingness to adopt a sustainable healthy diet (SHD) is a key factor affecting the sustainability of the entire food system. Studies have developed scales to measure consumer preferences for particular consumption patterns, while others have sought to empirically define the multiple dimensions of a sustainable food system (environmental, social, economic, etc.). This paper builds on these literatures by tracking consumers' SHD behaviors using a large-scale, longitudinal survey of adults in the United States and mapping them onto multiple systems-level indicators.

The socio-economic burden of cystic echinococcosis in Morocco: A combination of estimation method.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a major zoonosis in Morocco despite the launch of a national control programme in 2005. As its economic consequences have not been studied yet in Morocco, this study estimated CE impact in terms of monetary losses, disability-adjusted life years (DALY), and DALY for zoonotic diseases (zDALY) in the entire country and in specific regions for the 2011 to 2014 period. The direct monetary losses were related to organ seizure from infected animal in slaughterhouses, and to healthcare expenses as well as lost wages for infected humans. Animal production losses concerned
