Mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions have gained much popularity, and the sport is watched by many millions annually. Despite ongoing controversy, there have been no objective studies of the injuries sustained in MMA based on on-site evaluation. In the study reported in this article, we attempted to delineate injury patterns for MMA participants. We conducted an observational cohort study of MMA competitions held in Hawaii between 1999 and 2006. The study included 116 bouts, involving 232 "exposures" and 179 male participants between ages 18 and 40. All the fighters were examined by 1 of 4 ph

The elbow joint consists of the humeroulnar, humeroradial, and proximal radioulnar joints. Elbow stability is maintained by a combination of static and dynamic constraints. Elbow fractures are challenging to treat because the articular surfaces must be restored perfectly and associated soft tissue injuries must be recognized and appropriately managed. Most elbow fractures are best treated operatively with restoration of normal bony anatomy and rigid internal fixation and repair and/or reconstruction of the collateral ligaments. Advanced imaging, improved understanding of the complex anatomy of

BACKGROUND: Terrible triad injuries of the elbow, consisting of posterior ulnohumeral joint dislocation with associated fractures of the radial head and coronoid process, are challenging injuries due to the difficulty in restoring stability to the joint surgically while also attempting to allow early ROM to prevent stiffness. Furthermore, complications are both debilitating and relatively common, frequently requiring reoperation.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What patient-, injury-, or surgery-related factors are associated with reoperation after surgical treatment of terrible triad injuries of the

INTRODUCTION: Acute elbow instability usually develops after injuries involving the bony or ligamentous stabilizers of the joint. It occurs frequently after dislocation and/or fracture-dislocation, but isolated valgus or varus overloading can also lead to ligament ruptures with subsequent instability. Chronic instability can result from incompletely healed acute injuries or from recurring microtrauma, for example after repetitive strain from participating in certain sports.
CONCLUSION: Stable conditions of the joint are essential for early functional post-traumatic or postoperative treatment

PURPOSE: Serious arm injuries in youth baseball players have been increasing. Though a breakage in the kinetic chain could affect arm injuries, an association between arm injuries and insufficient support of the trunk and lower extremities is not well understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of low back and knee pain with elbow and/or shoulder complaints among youth baseball players.
METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire and document informed consent were mailed to youth athletes belonging to the Miyagi Amateur Sports Association. Multiple logistic regress

In the hypercompetitive environment of year round youth baseball, arm pain is commonplace. Although much research has been done about injuries in the overhead throwing athlete, the emphasis has been on the more elite levels, where athletes have reached full development. The anatomy of the skeletally immature athlete, including open physeal plates and increased tissue laxity, raises unique issues in the presentation and treatment of repetitive throwing injuries of the elbow and shoulder. With a focus on "little leaguers," this discussion evaluates five of the most common elbow and shoulder inju

Tendon injuries about the elbow are among the most commonly encountered pathology in this articulation. These injuries are often the result of chronic repetitive microtrauma but can be seen in the setting of acute trauma. This article focuses on the imaging diagnosis of tendon pathology in the elbow and the associated findings that can be seen with tendon injury. A detailed understanding of common pathology and patterns of injury can facilitate the ease and accuracy of imaging diagnosis.

Overhead throwing activities expose the elbow to tremendous valgus stress, making athletes vulnerable to a specific constellation of injuries. Although baseball players, in particular pitchers, are the athletes affected most commonly, overhead throwing athletes in football, volleyball, tennis, and javelin tossing also are affected. The purpose of this review is to review the anatomy, biomechanics, pathophysiology, and treatment of elbow disorders related to overhead throwing athletes. Although focus is on management of ulnar collateral ligament injuries, all common pathologies are discussed.

Instability in the pediatric elbow can be secondary to trauma, developmental disorders, congenital anomalies, inherited disorders, or acquired systemic processes. The pediatric elbow presents unique challenges with regard to open growth plates, propensity for dislocation and spontaneous reduction, and increased time for the development of post-traumatic deformity into adulthood. The purpose of this article is to review current concepts of injuries leading to elbow instability, discuss how to recognize and treat the instability, and address other, nontraumatic causes of elbow instability.

Traumatic injuries of the elbow are frequent in patients of all ages but are particularly common in young children and adolescents engaged in normal play and athletic competition. Injury may result primarily due to direct trauma or may be secondary to transmission of forces through the elbow following a fall on an outstretched hand. In middle-aged and older individuals, chronic repetitive injuries tend to predominate. In all patients, radiographs remain the initial imaging study of choice. Many patients, however, may need advanced cross-sectional imaging (i.e. MRI, CT, or ultrasound) either at

Successful treatment of elbow instability is aided by fundamental biomechanical understanding. This allows for clinical instability to be traced back to structural injuries, which can be addressed with targeted therapy. Acute instability of the elbow joint after frequent posterolateral dislocations tends to affect the radial ligamentous complex. In addition to simple ligamentous injuries, fractures can also contribute to elbow instability; comminuted fractures of the radial head often correlate with a rupture of the ulnar collateral ligament. Improperly healed acute injuries can result in chro

Elbow dislocations are among one of the most frequently dislocated joints, with an incidence of five to six cases annually per 100,000 persons in the United States. The vast majority of elbow dislocations occur posteriorly, secondary to a disruption in the anterior elbow- and posterior elbow-stabilizing structures. Anterior elbow dislocations are rare injuries in both children and adults, occurring as the proximal ulna is forced anterior to the distal humerus with or without the proximal radius. As of 2019, only 21 anterior elbow dislocations without fractures have been reported between 1922 a
