BACKGROUND: High-voltage electrical injuries (HVEI) and thermal burns are both classified as severe burn trauma, yet their clinical impact differs markedly. The HVEIs cause deep tissue destruction and systemic complications that are often underestimated in severity by conventional burn indices such as TBSA (Total Body Surface Area) and ABSI (Abbreviated Burn Severity Index).
METHODS: A retrospective cohort analysis was performed on 1515 burn patients treated between 1994 and 2024. After exclusions 1489 patients were evaluated, including 92 with HVEI and 1397 with thermal burns. The demographi

Electrical injury may cause various cardiac complications, including electrocardiographic (ECG) changes that mimic acute myocardial infarction. We present a 38-year-old man who developed cardiopulmonary arrest after exposure to a 25,000-volt electrical current. The admission ECG showed inferolateral ST-segment elevation, raising suspicion for acute myocardial infarction. Cardiac biomarkers were markedly elevated, and transthoracic echocardiography demonstrated a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) of 35% with inferoposterolateral wall hypokinesia accompanied by moderate mitral regurgitat

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a promising adjunct to activity-based training for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). While lower extremity NMES applications are well documented, upper extremity (UE) outcomes remain underexplored in pediatric SCI. The objective of this case series was to evaluate outcomes following a combined NMES and activity-based therapy program targeting the UE in children with chronic SCI.
METHODS: In this retrospective case series, we analyzed outcomes from five children, ages 4 to 15 years old, with chronic cervical level S

BACKGROUND: Diaphragmatic electrical stimulation (DES) describes the process whereby electrical impulses are delivered to the diaphragm or phrenic nerves to elicit diaphragmatic contraction. DES is also known as diaphragmatic pacing, phrenic pacing, electrophrenic respiration or electroventilation. DES may be used as an alternative to positive pressure ventilation in selected patients with high spinal cord injury (SCI) or central hypoventilation syndromes (CHS). By enabling a more physiological form of respiration, it can allow speech, improve olfaction, decrease the frequency of respiratory i

The purpose of our study was to develop a toolkit to facilitate the implementation of functional electrical stimulation (FES) cycling for persons with a newly acquired spinal cord injury (SCI) in the acute care inpatient hospital setting. The researchers and community members used participatory action as a research approach to co-create the toolkit. We held two focus groups to develop drafts, with a third meeting to provide feedback, and a fourth meeting to evaluate the toolkit and determine dissemination strategies. Toolkit development followed the Planning, Action, Reflection, Evaluation cyc

BACKGROUND: Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) protects brain cells and blood flow, making it an intriguing treatment option for skull and brain injury victims. Understanding how transcranial electroencephalography (tES) affects cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) and intracranial pressure (ICP) might improve patient outcomes. Most techniques for evaluating ICP and CPP include intrusive procedures that might cause infections and hiccups. Additionally, current methods cannot optimize patient results by changing stimulation settings in real-time.
NEW METHOD: The Optimizing tES Parameters f

Failure of central nervous system (CNS) axons to regenerate after injury results in permanent disability. Several molecular neuro-protective and neuro-regenerative strategies have been proposed as potential treatments but do not provide the directional cues needed to direct target-specific axon regeneration. Here, we demonstrate that applying an external guidance cue in the form of electric field stimulation to adult rats after optic nerve crush injury was effective at directing long-distance, target-specific retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axon regeneration to native targets in the diencephalon.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the most devastating diseases worldwide, and its recovery is hindered by damage and loss of nerve endings leading to loss of neurons and formation of glial scars. In this study, an injectable GelMA hydrogel incorporating neural stem cells (NSCs) and fingolimod (FTY720), combined with electrical stimulation (ES), was developed to enhance neural regeneration and suppress glial scar formation in a rat SCI model of complete spinal cord transection. The combined therapy of ES and injectable hydrogel incorporated with FTY720 improved both proliferation and neuronal

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) can experience accelerated cognitive aging. Myokines (factors released from muscle cells during contractions), such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), are thought to have beneficial effects on cognition. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) was shown to elicit a large release of myokines. However, the effects of NMES on cognitive function have not been studied.
OBJECTIVE: To present the study protocol for a clinical trial evaluating the effects of NMES aimed at improving cognition and BDNF.
METHODS: A replicated randomi

In recent years, the electric scooter has become one of the most popular means of transportation on short trips. Due to the lag in the formulation of transportation policies and regulations, coupled with the increasing number of electric scooter crashes, there has been growing concern about the safety of pedestrians and electric scooter riders. For the first time in the extant literature, this study aims to analyze injury severity of electric scooter crashes by unobserved heterogeneity modeling approaches. A random parameters approach with heterogeneity in means and variances is utilized to ex

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? First, how does physical rehabilitation influence recovery from traumatic muscle injury? Second, how does physical activity impact the rehabilitation response for skeletal muscle function and whole-body metabolism? What is the main finding and its importance? The most salient findings were that rehabilitation impaired muscle function and range of motion, while restricting activity mitigated some negative effects but also impacted whole-body metabolism. These data suggest that first, work must continue to explore treatment parameters, in

Electric scooters (or e-scooters) are among the most popular micromobility options that have experienced an enormous expansion in urban transportation systems across the world in recent years. Along with the increased usage of e-scooters, the increasing number of e-scooter-related injuries has also become an emerging global public health concern. However, little is known regarding the risk factors for e-scooter-related crashes and injury crashes. This study consisted of a two-phase survey questionnaire administered to a cohort of e-scooter riders (n = 210), which obtained exposure information
