Electrolyte-anion-controlled reactivity of aromatic radical cations.

Electrolytes are indispensable in electrosynthesis, yet their function is generally confined to ionic conduction. Here we show that specific association of electrolyte anions provides a powerful means to regulate the reactivity of electrogenerated aromatic radical cations. Electrochemical oxidation of 2,5-diarylthiophenes in the presence of a coordinating anion, triflate (TfO-), selectively triggers C-C bond formation, leading to dimerization followed by oxidative cyclization to afford thiophenium cations. In contrast, weakly coordinating anions such as B(C6F5)4 - stabilize persistent and larg…

Comprehensive analysis of open and isolated confined electrolyte systems.

In this paper, various aspects of the Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) equation, focusing on the roles of structural confinement and ionic conservation have been addressed. Specifically, this paper provides an analytical and well-behaved solution of the PB equation in finite and infinite structures for open and isolated electrolytic environments. A structure-dependent Debye length for confined systems and a generalized Debye length appropriate for isolated electrolytes are introduced. For an isolated symmetric (1:1) electrolyte, a generalized PB equation has been derived. In the literature, the solution…

Fluid and Electrolyte Management in Critically Ill Patients with Infections.

Fluid and electrolyte management is a crucial component of care in critically ill patients with severe infections. Patients with sepsis, septic shock, or multiorgan dysfunction syndrome struggle to maintain fluid balance due to increased capillary permeability, inflammation, vasodilation, and organ dysfunction. Inadequate fluid balance can increase complications, morbidity, and mortality. Fluid management is complex because sepsis disrupts vascular permeability, tissue perfusion, and cellular function. Infectious disease care is further challenged by antimicrobial resistance, drug stewardship,

Acid-Base and Electrolyte Disorders: Acid-Base Disorders.

Maintaining a normal physiologic acid-base balance is essential for the functioning of every organ system in the body. The renal and pulmonary systems are the primary regulators of acid-base balance. There are four principal acid-base disorders: metabolic acidosis, metabolic alkalosis, respiratory acidosis, and respiratory alkalosis. A systematic approach to evaluation is critical to identify potential etiologies. A history, physical examination, metabolic profile, and arterial blood gas measurement provide a full assessment of acid-base status. However, availability of arterial blood gas meas

Comparison of Prescribed and Measured Dialysate Electrolyte Levels in the Hemodialysate.

Background. The measured electrolyte composition of the dialysate (D) should be in close approximation to that of the hemodialysis prescription. However, to the best of our knowledge, no studies have compared prescribed and measured hemodialysate electrolyte levels other than sodium (Na+) and calcium (Ca++). Objective. To determine the difference between the measured and prescribed electrolyte concentrations in the hemodialysate and the factors responsible for it. Methods. In this retrospective study, data from biochemical analyses of the hemodialysate, acid concentrate and product water were

A Comprehensive Review of Electrolyte Imbalances and Their Applied Aspects in Dermatology.

Electrolytes play a pivotal role in the maintenance of neutrality in the minerals of the cells - also, the generation and conduction of action potentials in neurons and muscles. Key electrolytes include sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, calcium, and phosphate. Electrolyte imbalances can result in elevated or diminished levels. Abnormal electrolyte levels, whether raised or decreased, interfere with normal physiological activities and may result in life-threatening consequences. Electrolyte imbalances are common in critical care units, although they are less frequent in dermatological con…

Water and electrolyte homeostasis during decongestion in heart failure.

In heart failure, sodium retention generally occurs out of proportion to water retention and may occur disproportionate to chloride retention, requiring excretion of other cations (i.e. potassium, magnesium, and hydrogen). Renal homeostatic mechanisms keep chloride levels in balance, making it the primary regulator of intravascular tonicity. Excess total body sodium stores and potassium depletion increase the vulnerability to dehydration, especially in the intracellular compartment. With decompensation, extracellular volume expansion with sodium and chloride overload occurs, further enhancing

Fluid and electrolyte disorders following traumatic brain injury.

Abnormalities in salt and water balance are common following traumatic brain injury (TBI), manifesting clinically as either as hypo- or hypernatraemia. Dysnatraemia is associated with a greater risk of secondary brain injury from resultant changes in brain fluid levels, greater morbidity, longer length of hospital stay and in the case of hypernatraemia, greater mortality following TBI. Dysnatraemia occurs in the acute phase following TBI, is often transient and resolves in the majority of patients with recovery from the initial insult. Hyponatraemia secondary to the syndrome of inappropriate a

Electrolyte and Acid-Base Abnormalities After Kidney Transplantation.

Kidney transplantation is the optimal therapeutic approach for individuals with end-stage kidney disease. The Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients has reported a continuous rise in the total number of kidney transplants performed in the United States, with 25,500 new kidney recipients in 2022 alone. Despite an improved glomerular filtration rate, the post-transplant period introduces a unique set of electrolyte abnormalities that differ from those encountered in chronic kidney disease. A variety of factors contribute to the high prevalence of hypomagnesemia, hyperkalemia, metabolic aci

Electroactive Behavior of Adjustable Vinylferrocene Copolymers in Electrolyte Media.

The redox-active properties of a series of ferrocene-containing vinyl polymers were investigated in aqueous and organic media. Each metallopolymer contained vinylferrocene (VFc) and a non-redox-active species (X), and was combined with carbon nanotubes (CNT) to generate P(VFcn-co-X1-n)-CNT composites for heterogeneous electrochemical analysis. Tunable pseudocapacitances spanning ca. 0.03-280 F/g VFc in aqueous solution were achieved by varying the copolymer composition, with P(VFc0.11-co-HEMA0.89) producing standardized values at ca. 160-180 F/g VFc even for differently hydrated anions. Variations in Post-Operative Electrolyte in Coronary Artery Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Low volume change and minimal trauma observed during angiography are the reason why physicians often overlook any changes affecting pre-operative electrolytes levels after coronary intervention. However, few studies have addressed the issue of electrolyte changes after the coronary intervention. Therefore, our study investigates coronary angiography's effect on electrolytes and provides the quick identification of groups more prone to electrolyte changes. METHODS: From the department of cardiology of the second affiliated hospital of Shandong's first medical university, 374 patien…

Electrolyte and Acid-Base Disorders Associated with Cancer Immunotherapy.

Novel immunotherapy drugs have changed the landscape of cancer medicine. Immune checkpoint inhibitors and chimeric antigen receptor T cells are being used and investigated in almost all types of cancers. Immune-related adverse events have been associated with immunotherapies. AKI has been the most commonly associated kidney adverse event. In this review, we showcase the several associated electrolyte disorders seen with immunotherapy. Immune checkpoint inhibitors can lead to hyponatremia by several mechanisms, with the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuresis being the most common. Endocrine cau

Trauma-related electrolyte disturbances: From resuscitation to rhabdomyolysis.

Traumatic injury results in drastic changes to a patient's normal physiology. The hormonal stress response, as well as some treatment strategies, lead to significant disruptions in electrolyte homeostasis that are important for clinicians to understand. In addition, advances in fluid resuscitation and modern transfusion practices have led to their own unique set of consequences, which we are just beginning to appreciate. Special attention is placed on rhabdomyolysis, as this distinct entity represents an extreme example of injury induced electrolyte derangements. This review describes the phys

A Ceramic-Electrolyte Glucose Fuel Cell for Implantable Electronics.

Next-generation implantable devices such as sensors, drug-delivery systems, and electroceuticals require efficient, reliable, and highly miniaturized power sources. Existing power sources such as the Li-I2 pacemaker battery exhibit limited scale-down potential without sacrificing capacity, and therefore, alternatives are needed to power miniaturized implants. This work shows that ceramic electrolytes can be used in potentially implantable glucose fuel cells with unprecedented miniaturization. Specifically, a ceramic glucose fuel cell-based on the proton-conducting electrolyte ceria-that is com…

Electrolyte and acid-base imbalance in severe COVID-19.

Acute systemic diseases, such as severe infections, can lead to electrolyte and acid-base alterations. To study the presence of electrolyte imbalance in severe COVID-19, we investigated the frequency and consequences of changes in electrolyte and acid-base patterns over time. We performed a retrospective cohort study including 406 patients with severe COVID-19. Levels of electrolytes, base excess, pH, serum osmolality, and hematocrit, the first 2 weeks of hospitalization, were collected daily from the laboratory database and clinical data from patients' medical records. We found that hyponatre…

Enzyme-electrolytic degradation of dichloromethane: Efficiency, kinetics and mechanism.

Enzymatic electrolysis cell (EEC) has advantages over microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) due to the needless of microbe inoculation and high-efficiency of enzymatic reaction. In this study, an EEC was first applied to achieve the effective degradation of halogenated organic pollutants and dichloromethane (CH2Cl2) was utilized as a model pollutant. The results indicate that the degradation efficiency of CH2Cl2 after 2 hr reaction in the EEC was almost 100%, which was significantly higher than that with enzyme (51.1%) or current (19.0%). The current induced the continuous regeneration of reduced

Electrodeposition of tin nanowires from a dichloromethane based electrolyte.

Tin was electrodeposited from a dichloromethane-based electrolyte at ambient temperature into gold coated anodic alumina membranes with nanoscale pores. The tin nanowires are mainly 〈200〉 aligned, together with some 〈101〉 and 〈301〉 wires. Partial filling of the structure and a distribution of wire lengths was found. Grafting of the pores with hydrophobic surface groups was trialled as a means of modifying the deposition, however, it did not increase the proportion of pores in which wires grew. Under potentiostatic conditions the limited rates of nucleation and diffusion down the 1D pores contr

Structural Properties of Solid Electrolyte Interphase on Lithium Metal.

To gain an understanding of the structural properties of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) created on the surface of lithium during an electrochemical deposition/dissolution reaction in propylene carbonate (PC) containing different concentrations of LiClO4 (1.09, 3.27 mol kg(-1)), the surface of lithium was examined through transmission electron microscopy (TEM) after 30 cycles. The poor cyclability of the electrodes in the 1.09 mol kg(-1) solution was improved considerably when employing 3.27 mol kg(-1) solution. TEM showed that the latter solution produced a thinner SEI with smaller res
