Loss of balance is prevalent in older adults and populations with gait and balance impairments. The present paper aims to develop a method to automatically distinguish compensatory balance responses (CBRs) from normal gait, based on activity patterns of muscles involved in maintaining balance. In this study, subjects were perturbed by lateral pushes while walking and surface electromyography (sEMG) signals were recorded from four muscles in their right leg. To extract sEMG time domain features, several filtering characteristics and segmentation approaches are examined. The performance of three…

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the neural mobilization technique on electromyography function, disability degree, and pain in patients with leprosy.
METHODS: A sample of 56 individuals with leprosy was randomized into an experimental group, composed of 29 individuals undergoing treatment with neural mobilization, and a control group of 27 individuals who underwent conventional treatment. In both groups, the lesions in the lower limbs were treated. In the treatment with neural mobilization, the procedure used was mobilization of the lumbosacral roots and sciatic nerve…

Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy is a genetically inherited disorder characterized by myoclonic jerks and generalized seizures. It has been proposed that patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy have larger motor units (MUs) than normals by MU number estimation and macro electromyography techniques. In this study, an experimental setup for scanning electromyography was built to investigate electrophysiologic cross-sections of the MU territories in 9 patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy, 3 patients with spinal muscular atrophy, and 10 healthy volunteers. Scanning electromyography was performed…

To examine the diagnostic value of history, physical examination and needle EMG in predicting nerve root compression on MRI in patients with clinical suspicion of lumbosacral radicular syndrome (LSRS). Subjects comprised 202 consecutive patients from January 2006 to March 2007 with suspicion of LSRS referred by general practitioners. Clinical evaluation consisted of history, physical examination, EMG and MRI. Bivariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were used to calculate the diagnostic value of each test item compared to radiological nerve root compression. 95 patients (47%) had ra

INTRODUCTION: Neurophysiological monitoring during spinal surgery reduces the associated neurological complications. Continuous EMG recording has developed an useful technique for spinal root monitoring
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty four patients who underwent surgery for several lumbosacral spinal lesions (low and high degree spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, degenerated or herniated lumbar discs) were studied to evaluate the effectiveness of continuous EMG recording in monitoring spinal root function during surgery. Electrical root or screw stimulation was also performed in nine of them. To

OBJECTIVES: To display time-series firing rate and recruitment data for multiple, simultaneously active motoneurons activating human laryngeal muscles. These data provide specific information about how laryngeal muscle force is being controlled by the central nervous system at the level of the lower motoneuron.
METHODS: A quadrifilar needle electrode was used to record multi-channel myoelectric signals from thyroarytenoid muscle of normal subjects during tasks ranging from quiet breathing to a short sentence. Motor unit action potentials of the signal space were identified and tracked through

Intraoperative cranial nerve monitoring has significantly improved the preservation of facial nerve function following surgery in the cerebellopontine angle (CPA). Facial electromyography (EMG) was performed in 60 patients during CPA surgery. Pairs of needle electrodes were placed subdermally in the orbicularis oris and orbicularis oculi muscles. The duration of facial EMG activity was noted. Facial EMG potentials occurring in response to mechanical or metabolic irritation of the corresponding nerve were made audible by a loudspeaker. Immediate (4-7 days after tumor excision) and late (6 month…

An evaluation of the muscular functions of the vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, rectus femoris, medial hamstring, and of the lateral hamstring was performed using electromyography in 33 knees of 26 female patients with osteoarthritis (OA group) and in 25 knees of 19 healthy female volunteers (control group). During standing on both feet, all muscles in the OA group showed higher IEMG (integrated electromyography) and higher LMR (IEMG of vastus lateralis/IEMG of vastus medialis ratio in the quadriceps; and lateral hamstring/medial hamstring ratio in the hamstrings) than the control group. The…

With newer techniques for laryngeal intervention, it becomes a practical necessity to understand whether an immobile cord is due to neurogenic dysfunction or cricoarytenoid fixation. An objective test for this differentiation is laryngeal electromyography, which can be done as an office procedure with a minimum of discomfort. Our experience in a clinical setting has shown laryngeal electromyography to be efficient in accurately assessing the neuromuscular status of the intrinsic laryngeal musculature.

Previous studies have shown sex differences in muscle activation of the quadriceps and hamstrings with fatigue. However, whether these differences are present in a repeated sprint exercise (RSE) cycling task is unknown. Twenty (10 females) cyclists performed an RSE of 9 × 30 s bouts (1.5 min active rest in between) on their personal bike on a trainer, with instructions to produce as many watts as possible. Surface electromyography (EMG) of five right-side quadricep and hamstring muscles was recorded, with activation amplitude (RMS) calculated over each bout. Results show a general decrease wit…

Most studies evaluating the effect of trunk support exoskeletons on low back loading, report as outcomes either electromyography amplitudes (EMG) only, or EMG and kinematics. This narrative review aims to clarify to what extent effects of an exoskeleton on low back load can be misinterpreted when relying on EMG without correction for muscle length, contraction velocity, and abdominal muscle activation. For muscle length, we pooled model and experimental data from the literature to show how the magnitude of passive moments around the lumbar spine depends on lumbar flexion, and how this affects …

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is characterised by progressive degeneration of motor neurons, resulting in muscle weakness and atrophy. This neuronal loss is partially compensated for by the collateral sprouting of surviving motor neurons, leading to the formation of enlarged motor units (MUs). These MU adaptations, together with hyperexcitability and altered descending messages from the brain, lead to altered characteristics of the MU action potential shape and discharge pattern, that can be captured using high-density surface electromyography (HDsEMG). The aim of this review…

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder affecting millions worldwide, characterized by motor symptoms such as tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia that significantly impair daily life. The current diagnosis and monitoring rely primarily on clinical observations and rating scales (e.g., the MDS-UPDRS), which are subjective and limited in detecting subtle motor alterations, leading to inter- and intra-rater variability. In recent years, wearable sensors such as surface electromyography (sEMG) and inertial measurement units (IMUs) have emerged as non-invasive tools for quantifying …

Six patients treated by hyperselective neurectomy were assessed using preoperative dynamic electromyography and intraoperative force measurements. Patients with lower preoperative biceps dynamic electromyography activation had significantly reduced force production at operation, suggesting that these findings could guide and improve procedure selection.Level of evidence: IV.
