Four males with sidersosis oculi were reviewed. Vitreous/anterior chamber angle irons (cases 1 and 3) were misdiagnosed initially and discovered later. PURPOSE: To describe the outcome of specialized electrophysiology in visually impaired children.
METHODS: We carried out a retrospective evaluation of 340 electrophysiological examinations performed in 298 children over a 3-year period (2001-2003), with regard to demographic data, referral pattern, degree of compliance, and diagnostic results. Electrophysiology was performed without sedation or anaesthesia. In electroretinograms, DTL electrodes were used in combination with online selection of responses. Visual evoked potentials testing was performed with seven active occipital electrodes.

We determined whether epileptic clinical manifestations evoked by playing video games (VG) differ from those evoked by intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) or striped patterns (P). We exposed nine children who had TV- and VG-evoked seizures in daily life to 12 VG after standardized photic stimulation and pattern stimulation. Primary congenital ectropion uveae is an extremely rare ocular malformation frequently associated with unilateral glaucoma. We report on a 15-year-old boy with unilateral congenital ectropion uveae, glaucoma and transvitreal strands in an optically empty vitreous. Dark adaptation was normal, but scotopic ERG showed subnormal b-wave amplitudes in the affected eye, which is a typical finding in hereditary vitreoretinal degenerations. A 66-year-old woman had a unilateral infarction in the cerebellar peduncle. Saccadic eye movements were intact in this patient, while smooth-pursuit eye movements were impaired. Magnetic resonance imaging disclosed that the lesion was well localized in the superior cerebellar peduncle and the juxtarestiform body. These findings support the idea that saccade signals from the cerebellum project to the brainstem through the hook bundle, which was recently confirmed in the monkey.

Recent studies have shown that nasal CPAP is very effective in the treatment of patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSA). To clarify the characteristics of pulmonary function testing and to evaluate the effect of short term nasal CPAP therapy in 13 cases of OSA patients, nasal CPAP was used for 10 to 14 days and polysonography was performed on two consecutive nights without nasal CPAP and at one night with nasal CPAP. Pulmonary function tests and the Uchida-Kraepelin test were performed before the initiation of nasal CPAP therapy and also 7 to 14 days after the nasal CPAP therapy.

Quantitative electro-oculographic recording techniques were used to analyze four characteristic eye movement abnormalities in 21 patients with internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO).
