Dural Venous System in the Cavernous Sinus: A Literature Review and Embryological, Functional, and Endovascular Clinical Considerations.

The cavernous sinus (CS) is one of the cranial dural venous sinuses. It differs from other dural sinuses due to its many afferent and efferent venous connections with adjacent structures. It is important to know well about its complex venous anatomy to conduct safe and effective endovascular interventions for the CS. Thus, we reviewed previous literatures concerning the morphological and functional venous anatomy and the embryology of the CS. The CS is a complex of venous channels from embryologically different origins. These venous channels have more or less retained their distinct original r…

Embryological, clinical and anatomopathological considerations on a very rare case of a bicephalous fetus (dicephalus dipus dibrachius).

In this paper, we present the very rare case of a 21 weeks pregnant woman, examined clinically and by ultrasound. We could observe the present of two heads and a common trunk and therefore we proceeded to the small caesarian of necessity. We examined the fetus from the clinical and pathological point of view and we could observe a rare case of pregnancy with a bicephalous malformed fetus. During the autopsy, we could reveal the common elements and the devised ones, which are described as it follows. The case is a very rare one and that probably explains the fact that until the 21 weeks examina

A hypothesis on the morphologic differences between Unna and Miescher nevi on the head and neck, based on embryologic bases.

Unna and Miescher nevi show very different morphologic features. The main difference is that melanocytes involve mainly the papillary dermis in Unna nevi, whereas they widely penetrate the reticular dermis in Miescher nevi. The reason for this behavior is not totally understood, but anatomical location might play a role, since because Unna nevi are mainly found on the trunk, whereas Miescher nevi are mainly found on the face. We decided to test this hypothesis in relative easy way: dermis from the frontal, temporal, maxillary, and mandibullary regions derives from the neural crest, whereas the

Micro-magnetic resonance imaging and embryological analysis of wild-type and pma mutant mice with clubfoot.

Gross similarities between the external appearance of the hind limbs of the peroneal muscle atrophy (pma) mouse mutant and congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), a human disorder historically referred to as 'clubfoot', suggested that this mutant could be a useful model. We used micro-magnetic resonance imaging to visualize the detailed anatomy of the hind limb defect in mutant pma mice and performed 3D comparisons between mutant and wild-type hind limbs. We found that the pma foot demonstrates supination (i.e. adduction and inversion of the mid foot and fore foot together with plantar flexion

A case of congenital diaphragmatic hernia with a hernia sac attached to the liver: hints for an early embryological insult.

We describe here the unusual operative findings in a case of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). A neonate antenatally diagnosed as havin … aminations. These findings have not been reported earlier in humans and might help to elucidate the embryology of the development of the diaphragm. Our findings suggest that this kind of defect occurs early in development, and we hypothesize that it is associated with a poorer prognosis.

Anterior choroidal artery supply to the posterior cerebral artery distribution: embryological basis and clinical implications.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: We report four cases of anomalous anterior choroidal artery supply to the temporal, parietal, and occipital cortic … f patients illustrates an underemphasized but potentially important vascular anomaly. Phylogeny and embryology of the intracerebral vessels suggest a mechanism related to transposed distributions. Careful attention must be directed to the microvascular anatomy of the intracerebral circulation so that these anomalies are recognized and, if necessary, factored …

A new embryologic classification for uro-gynecologic malformations: the syndromes of mesonephric duct induced müllerian deformities.

A new embryologic classification is proposed to explain the association of unilateral renal agenesis with abnormalities of the female reproductive tract. An awareness of the syndrome of combined müllerian and mesonephric duct abnormalities may permit accurate anatomic diagnosis and spare patients needless surgical exploration.

[Accessory spleen in the pancreatic tail -- a neglected entity? A contribution to embryology, topography and pathology of ectopic splenic tissue].

According to autoptic studies, accessory spleens may be found in 10% to 15% of the population, in 1% to 2% they are located in the pancreatic tail. They thus have to be taken into account in the differential diagnosis of intra- and peripancreatic tumorous lesions. After splenorenal fusion, they can be found pararenally and retroperitoneally, and after splenogonadal fusion they can descend into the pelvis or scrotum. Since they usually are asymptomatic, they are mostly discovered accidentally. The diagnosis is ascertained by a scintigram with technetium-99-marked, heat-damaged red blood cells.

Children With Synpolydactyly Type I Homozygous HOXD13 Mutations: Embryology and Surgical Correction of the "Cupping" of the Hands and Feet.

PURPOSE: Some patients with familial Synpolydactyly Type I have severe flexion deformities of the hands and feet at the metacarpophalangeal and the metatarsophalangeal joints, and the resulting deformity has been named "cupping" of the hands and feet. Severe "cupping" requiring surgical correction has not been previously reported. We explore the embryology and pathogenesis of the phenotype and present the surgical technique and results after the correction of the cupping deformity in a case series of 3 children. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two children had severe deformity of the postaxial toes, an…

Pulmonary hypoplasia presented in adulthood as a chronic respiratory failure: report of two cases. Embryology, clinical symptoms and diagnostic procedures.

We report 2 cases of pulmonary hypoplasia diagnosed in adulthood presenting clinically as chronic respiratory failure. Both patients met criteria for chronic bronchitis and had shown repeated respiratory infections and increasing dyspnoea. The spirometry showed a severe non-defined ventilatory disturbance and the arterial blood gases showed the presence of marked hypoxaemia. The altered chest X-ray, arterial blood gases and spirometry had been attributed to chronic bronchitis. The CT scan was instrumental in establishing the diagnosis of pulmonary hypoplasia.

Comparative embryology of the squamate pancreas: Structural and 3D studies on the sand lizard (Lacerta agilis) and brown anole (Anolis sagrei).

This study investigates the developmental processes of the pancreas in two squamate species: the sand lizard (Lacerta agilis, Laterata) and the brown anole (Anolis sagrei, Iguania). Utilizing histological serial sections, we generated 3D reconstructions of the pancreas and its associated structures. Through a comparative analysis, we identified shared developmental events, including the emergence of specific structures and the initiation of distinct processes, to elucidate patterns of pancreatic differentiation and morphology. The pancreas of the sand lizard originates from three buds, while t

When Closure Fails: What the Radiologist Needs to Know About the Embryology, Anatomy, and Prenatal Imaging of Ventral Body Wall Defects.

Ventral body wall defects (VBWDs) are one of the main categories of human congenital malformations, representing a wide and heterogeneous gr … between the different VBWDs and their associated anomalies. In this article, we review the relevant embryology of VBWDs to facilitate understanding of the pathologic anatomy and diagnostic imaging approach. Features will be illustrated with prenatal US and magnetic resonance imaging and correlated with postnatal and clinical imaging.

Prostatic development and verumontanum in a 46,XX karyotype : An embryological paradox redefining diagnostic algorithm for testicular DSD.

Evaluation of 46,XX Disorders of Sex Development (DSD) with severe virilization often yields inconclusive results. We report a case where alternative diagnostics resolved a significant phenotype-karyotype discordance. A 2-year-old with a 46,XX karyotype and penoscrotal hypospadias was evaluated. Diagnostic urethroscopy revealed definitive prostatic tissue and a verumontanum. These findings provided anatomical evidence of Wolffian differentiation, distinct from Müllerian persistence, and incompatible with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH). Identifying the prostate established the diagnosis o

Azygos ACA fusiform dilatation: embryological insights from co-existing midline lipoma and callosal malformation.

We present a case of a tubulonodular-type lipoma of the corpus callosum (LCC) with hypogenesis of the corpus callosum (CC) accompanied by an azygos anterior cerebral artery (ACA) with fusiform dilatation adjacent to the lipoma in an 85-year-old female that was incidentally found during a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) workup. The patient had no symptoms of LCC or fusiform ACA dilatation. This case highlights the characteristic imaging findings and morphological changes in the adjacent arteries, particularly those associated with LCC. A literature review of 32 reported cases of LCC confirmed
