UNLABELLED: Emergency department (ED) overcrowding is a critical global challenge, affecting the quality and timeliness of medical care. Chile is no exception: In 2024, over 18 million ED visits were recorded in the public health system, reflecting high demand and complicating efficient resource planning and allocation.
AIM: To develop a predictive model capable of accurately estimating the weekly number of consultations in the emergency department of a private university hospital in Santiago, Chile. The model was expected to generate a management impact if it could predict ED visits 14 days

Nurses and other emergency department (ED) staff often experience verbal and physical abuse as part of their everyday work. Body-worn cameras are one tool that ED staff can use to try to reduce workplace violence and abuse and have been shown to be effective in other healthcare environments, such as mental health units. This article describes a pilot service evaluation which used a survey to assess the effectiveness of using body-worn cameras for staff in the author's ED. Findings suggest that nurses believed the cameras provided support when they were confronted by abusive or aggressive patie

The general practitioner (GP) might offer a good alternative for the management of certain ophthalmologic emergencies in his or her practice, given the increasing demand for ophthalmological care and difficulties with access to ophthalmologists. The main objective of the study was to describe ophthalmological complaints and their management in general emergency departments compared to ophthalmological emergency departments in order to assess which pathologies can be treated by the GP. This was a single-center retrospective study at the University Hospital of Reims, based on consultation data f

BACKGROUND: The better treatment modalities for bleeding esophageal varices have improved the prognosis of cirrhosis.
AIM: To inquire about diagnostic and treatment modalities for esophageal bleeding in Chile.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: An enquiry about diagnosis and treatment of esophageal bleeding was designed and electronically sent to public and private health institutions that could admit patients and were located in cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants.
RESULTS: The enquiry was answered by 31 of 35 public and 17 of 19 private health institutions that were consulted. Emergency endoscop

Background This paper presents an assessment of the current emergency response to homeless people who use substances in Montreal, a major North American city. This project addresses the rising concern about homelessness in high-income countries. Several studies have shown that homeless people frequently use emergency services (i.e., police, paramedical, and hospital), especially in the context of substance use. Yet, the key actors' perspectives are poorly documented. Method Our team conducted a needs analysis using a deliberative democratic evaluation. Data collection strategies included an in

PURPOSE: To investigate the correlation between internet search activity and epistaxis-related Emergency Department visits.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from Google Trends were obtained (www.google.com/trends) for the search term "nosebleed" in Erie County, Pennsylvania during a five-year period. All epistaxis-related CPT code events were obtained from one hospital in this county during the same period. Google total counts were cross tabulated with the following month's ED visits. Graphical analysis and correlation were used to assess the relationship between ED visits and search engine activi

OBJECTIVE: The authors assessed the prevalence of psychiatric disorders among a population of patients examined in the emergency service of a French general hospital. They compared patients with and without psychiatric disorders. They also compared patients where the primary motive of emergency was psychiatric to those whose psychiatric disorders were secondarily diagnosed by a systematic assessment.
METHOD: Five hundred consecutive patients admitted to the emergency service of Bichat Claude Bernard Hospital (Paris, France) were interviewed with standardized questionnaires. Demographic detail

Emergency departments (EDs) are highly utilized by individuals with criminal-legal system involvement (CLSI)-including those pre-arrest, in-custody, and post-release. EDs are often considered "adverse outcomes" in health services, clinical, and implementation research. We argue that EDs should also be considered an important partner in clinical carceral health practice and research. EDs have served important roles in addressing clinical and social determinants of health among other marginalized populations, such as those with behavioral health needs or housing insecurity. As EDs interact with

BACKGROUND: The United States continues to experience unprecedented rates of overdose mortality and need to identify effective policies or practices that can be implemented. This study aims to measure the prevalence, frequency, timing, and rate of touchpoints that occurred prior to a fatal overdose where communities might intervene.
METHODS: In collaboration with Indiana state government, we conducted record-linkage of statewide administrative datasets to vital records (January 1, 2015, through August 26, 2022) to identify touchpoints (jail booking, prison release, prescription medication dis

Healthcare professionals are legally obliged to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that people, including those with learning disabilities, can access appropriate and timely care. However, although people with learning disabilities are high users of general health services, staff have little understanding of learning disability with a negative effect on patient experience and outcomes. This article explores some of the challenges experienced by people with learning disabilities in the emergency department (ED). Each section focuses on a different aspect of how to adjust the delivery of heal

Homelessness is a rapidly growing issue throughout the United States and has important public health implications. Los Angeles, like other large urban cities, has seen a recent increase in homelessness. However, little is known about emergency medical service (EMS) utilization by those experiencing homelessness. Objective: Describe the utilization of emergency medical services by homeless patients. Methods: This is a 12-month retrospective review of electronic health records of all 911-incidents attended by the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) from January to December 2018. The City of Los A

OBJECTIVES: Prehospital recognition of upper versus lower airway disease in infants or young children is critical as management strategies differ. A minimal amount is known regarding how well these distinctions are made in the field and whether they are associated with changes in care. We describe patient characteristics, emergency medical services (EMS) clinician impressions, assessments, and prehospital treatments for patients under 3 years old who were diagnosed in the emergency department (ED) with upper airway disease (croup) or lower airway disease (acute bronchitis, bronchiolitis, or as

A 50-year-old individual identified as a 'frequent user' of emergency services due to chronic abdominal pain was transported to the emergency department by ambulance during a new episode of abdominal pain. Despite being initially deemed stable by paramedics, the patient was not reassessed by the triage nurse upon arrival. Subsequently, the patient presented with severe pain, arterial hypotension, and tachycardia. Following a multidisciplinary protocol for pain management, analgesic treatment was initiated. Despite several hours of management and repeated assessments, an abdominal CT-scan was e

BACKGROUND: Low socioeconomic status (SES) has been linked to poor outcomes in many conditions. It is unknown whether these disparities extend to individuals presenting with dyspnoea. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between SES and incidence, care quality and outcomes among patients attended by emergency medical services (EMS) for dyspnoea.
METHODS: This population-based cohort study included consecutive patients attended by EMS for dyspnoea between 1 January 2015 and 30 June 2019 in Victoria, Australia. Data were obtained from individually linked ambulance, hospital and mortality datas

Head injuries, and specifically blunt head trauma, are common among pediatric patients of all ages. Patients may present to their primary care provider, to urgent care, or to the emergency department after head trauma. Such injuries may occur as a result of a variety of mechanisms, including falls, motor vehicle collisions, or sports injuries. Clinical decision rules exist to help guide the clinician in the initial evaluation of head injury and in determining when head imaging may be indicated. One such guideline that is widely used in the United States is known as the PECARN (Pediatric Emerge

STUDY OBJECTIVE: When using a standard geometry laryngoscope, experts recommend engaging the hyoepiglottic ligament-a ligament deep to the vallecula not visible to the intubator. The median glossoepiglottic fold (hereafter termed midline vallecular fold) is a superficial mucosal structure, visible to the intubator, that lies in the midline of the vallecula. We aimed to determine whether engaging the midline vallecular fold with a standard geometry blade tip during orotracheal intubation improved laryngeal visualization.
METHODS: We reviewed laryngoscopic videos from intubations by emergency p
