Interpersonal emotion regulation and emotional adjustment in adolescence: Directional associations and strategy-specific effects.

BACKGROUND: Previous theories and empirical studies suggest that interpersonal emotion regulation (IER) and specific IER strategies are closely linked to emotional adjustment. However, reciprocal associations among these constructs have rarely been examined while accounting for the temporal stability, and the existing evidence remains mixed. Using random intercept cross-lagged panel models (RI-CLPM), this study examined within-person bidirectional associations between IER and emotional adjustment (depressive symptoms and life satisfaction) among Chinese early adolescents. This study then inves

Impathy and Emotion Recognition: How Attachment Shapes Self- and Other-Focused Emotion Processing.

Background/Objectives: Early attachment experiences and psychopathology both shape individuals' emotion processing. However, the specific influence of adult attachment representations on self- (intrapersonal) and other-focused (interpersonal) emotion processing remains unclear, particularly in the context of personality disorders. This study examined how attachment representations (organized vs. unresolved) modulate intrapersonal emotion perception ("impathy") and interpersonal emotion recognition while accounting for personality pathology. Methods: Thirty-three adults (twenty-four patients wi

Exploring the Link between Emotional Schemas and Rumination: How Emotional Flexibility Acts as a Mediator.

BACKGROUND: Rumination negatively affects emotional and psychological functioning in nonclinical populations and plays an essential role in psychological disorders as a transdiagnostic factor. This study examined factors that increase individuals' vulnerability to rumination, focusing on the relationship between emotional schemas and rumination, with emotional flexibility as a mediating variable. METHODS: This descriptive-correlational study used structural equation modeling (SEM). Participants were 578 Tehran residents (381 females and 197 males), recruited through a voluntary sampling metho

Emotion regulation mediates the relation between intolerance of uncertainty and emotion difficulties: A longitudinal investigation.

Intolerance of uncertainty has been proposed as a transdiagnostic factor in emotional disorders. Despite comprehensive empirical evidence demonstrating the association between intolerance of uncertainty and emotional disorders, the underlying mechanism remains elusive. Drawing on theoretical frameworks and empirical studies, the current study proposed that emotion regulation emerges as a potential mechanism. We explored the connections among intolerance of uncertainty, eight emotion regulation strategies (both adaptive and maladaptive), and emotional difficulties (specifically anxiety and depr

Maternal childhood emotional abuse increases cardiovascular responses to children's emotional facial expressions.

Parents with a history of childhood maltreatment may be more likely to respond inadequately to their child's emotional cues, such as crying or screaming, due to previous exposure to prolonged stress. While studies have investigated parents' physiological reactions to their children's vocal expressions of emotions, less attention has been given to their responses when perceiving children's facial expressions of emotions. The present study aimed to determine if viewing facial expressions of emotions in children induces cardiovascular changes in mothers (hypo- or hyper-arousal) and whether these …

Emotional Distress in Portuguese Cancer Patients: The Use of the Emotion Thermometers (ET) Screening Tool.

Cancer patients may experience significant distress. The "Emotion Thermometers" (ETs) are a short visual analogue scale used to screen patients for psychosocial risk. This study aimed to assess emotional distress in a large sample of cancer patients attending psychological services at an non-governmental organization (NGO), and to explore factors that may contribute to it. The ETs were answered by 899 cancer patients. They were, on average, 59.9 years old, the majority were female, had breast cancer, were under treatment or were disease-free survivors, and reported high levels of emotional dis

Emotional Recognition Training Enhances Attention to Emotional Stimuli Among Male Juvenile Delinquents.

OBJECTIVE: Juvenile delinquents have deficits in emotional recognition that might play a critical role in the development of aggression. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of emotional recognition training and its consequences on emotional attention and aggression. METHODS: Seventy-three male juvenile delinquents were randomly assigned to two groups. One group was the modification group, which received eight days of training on an emotional recognition task. The purpose of the training was to modify interpretative biases in emotion recognition to encourage the perception of hap

Emotional processing in panic disorder and its subtypes: An fMRI study using emotional faces.

BACKGROUND: Inconsistent findings regarding the pathophysiology of panic disorder (PD) could result from clinical heterogeneity. Identifying subtypes could enhance insights into the neurobiological substrates of PD. METHODS: An emotional faces fMRI paradigm was used in a group of PD patients (n = 73) and healthy controls (n = 58). The overall PD group was further divided into three previously identified subtypes: a cognitive-autonomic (n = 22), an autonomic (n = 16) and an aspecific (n = 35) subtype. Differences in brain activity levels in response to emotional facial expressions between grou

Executive impairments in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: A systematic review with emotional and non-emotional paradigms.

BACKGROUND: Identifying a foreign body aspiration (FBA) still remains a diagnostic difficulty. Moreover, the indications for bronchoscopy in subjects of suspected foreign bodies are not clear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of pediatric pulmonologists in diagnosing FBA. METHODS: This was a retrospective, single-center study on children who underwent rigid bronchoscopy for suspected FBA. Data on the patients were obtained from the medical records. Patients who had foreign bodies (FB) identified during rigid bronchoscopy were classified as FB positive, and those in whom

Emotion-related variations in motor tremor: Magnitude, time course, and links to emotional temperament.

Following biological and comparative perspectives, it was posited that acute stressors would activate more primitive modes of action control favoring gross motor actions (e.g., fight or flight) over behavioral precision. Influences of this type should result in more rapid changes in movement velocity subsequent to emotionally upsetting stimulation. In investigating processes of this type, participants in three experiments (total N = 457) were asked to track a moving visual target as smoothly as possible. The introduction of brief, aversive noise blasts was found to destabilize such efforts. In

Emotion regulation in action: Use, selection, and success of emotion regulation in adolescents' daily lives.

Successful emotion regulation (ER) is a central aspect of psychosocial functioning and mental health and is thought to improve and be refined in adolescence. Past research on ER has mainly focused on one-time measurements of habitual ER. Linking regulatory strategies to emotions in daily lives is key to understanding adolescents' emotional lives. Using an Experience Sampling Method with 78 adolescents (M age = 13.91, SDage = .95, 66% girls), we investigated the use, selection, and success in down-regulating negative emotions of eight ER strategies across 44 assessments. Acceptance was the stra…

Emotional preferences and goals and emotion dysregulation in children with Asperger's syndrome and typically developing children.

OBJECTIVES: Emotion goals lie at the heart of emotion regulation, as people have to first decide what emotions they want to feel before engaging in emotion regulation. Given that children with Asperger's syndrome (AS) are characterized by exhibiting difficulties in emotion regulation, studying whether they display similar or different emotion goals compared to typically developing (TD) children may provide insightful information. METHODS: Thirty AS and 30 TD children (10-12 years) reported about their general (i.e., how they want to feel in general) and contextualized (i.e., how they want to …

Parental Meta-Emotion Philosophy and Emotion Coaching in Families of Children and Adolescents with an Anxiety Disorder.

Using a multi-method approach, this study examined differences in parental meta-emotional philosophy (including, parental emotional awareness and emotion coaching) for families with anxiety disordered (AD; n = 74) and non-AD (n = 35) children (aged 7 to 15). Further, it was investigated whether children's emotion regulation (ER) varied across the AD and non-AD groups. Parent(s) were interviewed about their awareness of emotions and emotion coaching; completed a battery of questionnaires that included a measure assessing children's emotion regulation; and engaged in a parent-child discussion ta…

Childhood emotional abuse, negative emotion-driven impulsivity, and alcohol use in young adulthood.

Childhood emotional abuse has been linked to problematic alcohol use in later life but there is a paucity of empirically based knowledge about the developmental pathways linking emotional abuse and alcohol use in young adulthood. Using a community sample of young individuals aged 18-25 (N=268; female 52%), we performed structural equation modeling to investigate whether emotional abuse influences alcohol use through urgent personality trait and to determine pathways for these effects in a multivariate context. We also examined variations in these pathways by four different alcohol use outcomes

Emotional Testimonies: An Ethnographic Study of Emotional Suffering Related to Migration from Mexico to Arizona.

It is increasingly argued that social and economic inequities poorly affect overall health. One of the means through which these inequities are translated to the body is via negative emotions, which carry known psychological and physiological responses. This paper examines migration-related psychosocial stressors impacting first-generation Mexican immigrants in southern Arizona, and reports on the primary emotional experiences immigrants associate with these stressors. Data were drawn from a qualitative, ethnographic study conducted over the course of 14 months during 2013-2014 with first-gene…

Salivary oxytocin mediates the association between emotional maltreatment and responses to emotional infant faces.

Childhood emotional maltreatment has been associated with a higher risk for maltreating one's own offspring. In the current study, we explored a possible role of oxytocin in mediating the association between childhood emotional maltreatment and participants' interpretation of infant facial expressions. Oxytocin levels were measured in 102 female participants using saliva samples. They rated the mood of thirteen infants with happy, sad and neutral facial expressions. Emotional maltreatment indirectly influenced responses to happy infant faces by modulating oxytocin levels: higher self-reported
