BACKGROUND/AIMS: Neuroendocrine tumours are fairly rare neoplasms that require different treatments and have various prognoses. The aim of this study was to present the author's observations of the histological tumor types, occurrence and its surgical treatment.
METHODOLOGY: Thirty-five cases of neuroendocrine tumours were studied retrospectively in a 9-year period. All cases were investigated for haematological and biochemical parameters. Ultrasonography, scintigraphy, computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging of abdominal cavity, pelvis, thorax or neck--depend on the tumor localizat

Accidental injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve is a common complication of thyroid surgery. Different mechanisms of injury have been described, such as mechanical, electrical, or thermal. Retrosternal operations, secondary bleeding requiring wound revision, or neoplastic tumors are also frequent causes of this complication. Intraoperative direct stimulation of suspected nerve structures as well as vagal nerve stimulation have been proposed to avoid the injury. The effect of stimulation can be assessed by direct observation of the vocal cords (direct laryngoscopy or fiberoscopy via a laryng

AIMS: Germline mutated RET proto-oncogene, causing multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN)-2a syndrome is the indication for prophylactic total thyroidectomy. Literature regarding the risk and the extent of early surgical intervention is scarce and the optimum age for surgery is still controversial. To optimize management in these young children we evaluate our experience and results.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 1990 to 2001 preventive total thyroidectomy was performed in 13 MEN-2a gene carriers (4 boys and 9 girls; median age 7 (4-14) years). Preoperative assessment, surgical procedure, pathologic

INTRODUCTION: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a common and potentially lethal disease. Approximately 10-20% of the patients progress to necrotizing pancreatitis (NP). The step-up approach is the gold standard approach to managing an infected necrotizing pancreatitis with acceptable morbidity and mortality rates. Video-assisted retroperitoneal debridement (VARD) has been described as a safe and feasible approach with high success rates. Multiple studies in the American, European, and Asian populations evaluating the outcomes of VARD have been published; nevertheless, outcomes in the Latin American p

In myopathic disorders, abnormal serum enzyme activities are seen primarily in diseases of skeletal muscle where the condition involves the muscle fibers themselves. In denervation myopathies, serum enzyme activities are usually normal. The most dramatic increases of serum enzymes, particularly creatine kinase, are found in the dystrophic diseases, particularly Duchenne dystrophy. A review is given here of the many causes of abnormal serum enzyme activities where the source of enzymes is believed to be skeletal muscle. These include the dystrophies, various types of trauma, exercise, drug- and

BACKGROUND: Parathyroid gland (PG) surgery is often challenging due to the small size and indistinct nature of these glands. The introduction of intraoperative near-infrared autofluorescence (NIRAF) has shown promise in localizing parathyroid tissue. However, the NIRAF features of parathyroid adenomas remain unclear. The aim of this study is to assess the NIRAF pattern of parathyroid adenomas.
METHODS: Patients who underwent surgery for primary hyperparathyroidism at the University Hospital of Pisa, Endocrine Surgery Unit, between December 2021 and February 2022 were enrolled in this study. I

Heavy menstrual bleeding is defined as excessive menstrual blood loss that interferes with a woman's physical, social, emotional, or material quality of life. If obstetrician-gynecologists suspect that a patient has a bleeding disorder, they should work in coordination with a hematologist for laboratory evaluation and medical management. Evaluation of adolescent girls who present with heavy menstrual bleeding should include assessment for anemia from blood loss, including serum ferritin, the presence of an endocrine disorder leading to anovulation, and evaluation for the presence of a bleeding

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) imaging of adrenal glands and its application to diagnostic procedures of adrenal diseases has been reported since 1998. It can be considered a relevant advantage in the field of adrenal diseases. Indeed, EUS allows the detection of adrenal lesions (even very small ones) and their characterization, the assessment of malignancy criteria, the early detection of neoplastic recurrences, the preoperative identification of morphologically healthy parts of the glands, the differentiation of extra-adrenal from adrenal tumors, and of the pathological entities associated with

Parathyroid glands play an important role in controlling calcium levels, which influence muscular contraction and neurotransmission. The number of variants, localization and ectopic positions make these glands tricky during surgical exploration. Detailed anatomical knowledge of these glands is fundamental to avoid postsurgical hypoparathyroidism, such as failures during thyroidectomy and parathyroid procedures. The purposes of this work were to study and report practical knowledge for surgeons in order to localize the glands. Dissections were performed on 56 cadavers. Gland identity was confir

INTRODUCTION: Parathyroid carcinoma is an exceptionally rare endocrine malignancy, constituting <1 % of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) cases. It presents with more severe hypercalcemia and higher PTH levels than benign parathyroid diseases, requiring increased clinical awareness for accurate identification and specialized management. The results of this case series may provide insight into the clinical presentation, diagnostic workup, surgical management, and prognosis of parathyroid carcinoma, supplemented by a comprehensive review of current diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

BACKGROUND: Papillary thyroid carcer (PTC) is the most prevalent endocrine malignancy, with the morbidity increase in recent years. The presence of metastatic lymph nodes stands as a significant predictor for recurrent occurrences of the disease. In this study, we explored the utility of biomarkers in aiding the identification of lymph node metastases in patients with PTC.
METHODS: We gathered 388 formalin-fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) lymph node specimens from 266 individuals who had undergone surgical procedures for PTC. These samples were analyzed for the mRNA expression level of thyroglo

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is a common endocrine disease that typically presents in peri- and postmenopausal women. PHPT is due to a single parathyroid adenoma in most cases, which leads to stable hypercalcemia over years. Nowadays, the diagnosis is often coincidental, reached by chance in subjects without specific symptoms-asymptomatic PHPT. However, the patients might have subtle disease-related manifestations. Management standards have been reviewed through international workshops over more than three decades, leading to absolute and relative indications for parathyroidectomy (PTX),

PURPOSE: To perform an intraoperative topographic analysis of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) and parathyroid glands during thyroid and parathyroid surgery, focusing on their relationship with the inferior thyroid artery (ITA), RLN branching patterns, and glandular positioning. Based on a high-volume surgical cohort, the study proposes a standardized dissection approach to reduce RLN injury and postoperative hypoparathyroidism.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 500 patients undergoing thyroidectomy and/or parathyroidectomy between 2011 and 2021 was analyzed. All cases followed a uniform

Introduction: Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is an endocrine disorder characterized by excessive parathyroid hormone production, typically due to adenomas, hyperplasia, or carcinoma. Preoperative imaging plays a critical role in guiding surgical planning, particularly in selecting patients for minimally invasive procedures. While first-line imaging techniques, such as ultrasound and 99mTc-sestamibi scintigraphy, are standard, advanced second-line imaging modalities like 18F-fluorocholine PET/CT (FCH-PET) and four-dimensional computed tomography (4D-CT) have emerged as valuable tools when i
