Bioactivity evaluation of three calcium silicate-based endodontic materials.

AIM: To compare white ProRoot MTA (WMTA), EndoSequence BC sealer (BC sealer) and Biodentine with regard to their ability to produce apatites and cause Ca and Si incorporation in adjacent human root canal dentine after immersion in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). METHODOLOGY: Root sections of human single-rooted teeth were filled with one of the materials and immersed in PBS for 1, 7, 30 or 90 days (n = 5 each). Morphology and elemental composition of surface precipitates and interfacial dentine were analysed using a wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy electron probe microanalyser with i

The impact of thermocycling process on the dislodgement force of different endodontic cements.

To evaluate the effects of thermocycling (500 cycles, 5°C/55°C) on the push-out bond strength of calcium silicate based cements including WMTA, Nano-WMTA, and Bioaggregate to root dentin. Forty-eight dentin slices were prepared and divided into 3 groups (n = 16) and filled with Angelus WMTA, Nano-WMTA, or Bioaggregate. After incubation, half of the samples were thermocycled while the other half remained untreated. Push-out bond strength was calculated, and the modes of the bond failures were determined by SEM. The highest bond strength was seen in nonthermocycled Nano-WMTA samples and the lowe

Association of endodontic infection with detection of an initial lesion to the cardiovascular system.

INTRODUCTION: Dental infections might predispose toward the onset of cardiovascular disease (CVD). To date, only a few studies, yielding inconclusive findings, have investigated the potential correlation between apical periodontitis (AP) and CVD. The aim of this study (as the first part of a prospective study) was to evaluate, in the absence of CV risk factors, whether subjects with AP were more exposed to the pathogenetic indices of an atherosclerotic lesion. METHODS: Forty men between the ages of 20 and 40 years who were free from periodontal disease, CVD, and traditional CV risk factors we

Can traumatic occlusion cause endodontic problems? A case report.

Radicular cysts are commonly found odontogenic cysts in the jaws. The lesion is diagnosed mainly in young patients during the second decade of life. In the majority of cases, it is asymptomatic. This paper reports a rare case in which traumatic occlusion was identified as the etiology of a radicular cyst. Endodontic treatment was performed and the traumatic occlusion also was corrected. A six-month follow-up appointment found good healing of the periapical region.

Frequency of localization of the painful tooth by patients presenting for an endodontic emergency.

INTRODUCTION: Endodontic pain patients sometimes have difficulty in accurately identifying the painful tooth. We determined the frequency in which patients presenting with endodontic pain can correctly localize the painful tooth and the effect of periradicular symptoms. METHODS: The frequency of localization of the painful tooth in 79 endodontic emergency patients was assessed by using patient and dentist assessment of presenting pain along with the verbal numeric rating scale (VNRS). RESULTS: The results show that patients presenting with odontogenic pain can localize the painful tooth 73.3

Current trends in endodontic practice: emergency treatments and technological armamentarium.

The current clinical practice of endodontics includes the utilization of a variety of new technological advances and materials. The last comprehensive survey that compared treatment modalities used in endodontic practices was conducted in 1990. The purpose of the current survey was to determine the frequency with which these new endodontic technologies and materials are being used in endodontic practices today. An e-mail questionnaire was sent to the 636 active diplomates of the American Board of Endodontics with current e-mail addresses. Two hundred thirty-two diplomates responded for a respo…

Cytotoxicity of epiphany SE endodontic sealer: a comparative in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: The Epiphany endodontic obturation system, which was developed for use with all current root canal-filling techniques by substituting for gutta-percha and sealer, has been recently modified by eliminating the priming step and introducing a new self-etch, dual-cure, resin-based sealer; Epiphany SE. As with all new endodontic compounds, this novel material should undergo preliminary testing for biocompatibility. The aim of the present study was to investigate the in vitro cytotoxicity of Epiphany SE and to compare it with the original Epiphany sealer and with a commonly used endodont

[Injury following sodium hypochlorite irrigation during endodontic treatment].

A 58-year-old woman was referred by her dentist to a maxillofacial surgeon because of a rapidly increasing facial swelling. The swelling developed after sodium hypochlorite irrigation during the endodontic treatment of tooth 25. A mechanical heart valve, a heart rhythm disorder, and antithrombotic therapy were complicating medical conditions. Treatment consisted of 12 mg dexamethason administered once intravenously, augmentin administered thrice daily intravenously, and oral analgetics. Damage following sodium hypochlorite irrigation during endodontic treatment is a rare disorder which is asso

Endodontic treatment of dens invaginatus: a 5-year follow-up.

Dens invaginatus is an anomaly of the tooth formation of embryonic origin that presents itself in several morphologic types. The complex anatomy of these teeth makes nonsurgical endodontic treatment complex and more so when its apex is immature. The 2 cases reported illustrate the nonsurgical endodontic management of a dens invaginatus type II and type III with an immature apex and periapical lesions, in which mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) in one case, and calcium hydroxide in the other one, were the materials used. A 5-year follow-up of both cases shows a complete periapical healing with b

Catonella morbi and Granulicatella adiacens: new species in endodontic infections.

OBJECTIVE: This study intended to examine samples from primary endodontic infections for the presence of Catonella morbi and Granulicatella adiacens, 2 species that have been recently suggested to be involved with infections in other oral sites. STUDY DESIGN: Genomic DNA was isolated directly from samples taken from teeth with different forms of apical periodontitis, and a devised culture-independent 16S rRNA gene-based heminested PCR assay was used to determine the prevalence of these 2 target species. Species-specific primers were developed by aligning closely related 16S rRNA gene sequence

Contemporary endodontic retreatments: an analysis based on clinical treatment findings.

A prospective in vivo investigation was conducted to determine radiographic and clinical factors associated with contemporary nonsurgical endodontic retreatments. Approximately 1,100 failing endodontically treated teeth were screened to determine an appropriate treatment plan. Using magnification, 337 consecutive retreatment cases were evaluated and treated. The vast majority of the retreated cases involved multiple factors. Eighty-five percent of the cases presented with periradicular radiolucencies. Sixty-five percent of the cases demonstrated poor radiographic obturation quality. Associated
