Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) in elective intertrochanteric fracture patients result in reduced length of hospital stay (LOS) without compromising functional outcome.

BACKGROUND: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) has rapidly gained popularity among hip or knee arthroplasty area which can decrease hospital length of stay (LOS). However, limited data exist regarding its safety and efficacy among intertrochanteric fracture patients. The purpose of this study was to determine if LOS associated with intertrochanteric fracture patients can be improved following an existing orthopedic ERAS procedure. METHODS: We reviewed the outcomes of all patients who had been treated with the PFNA intramedullary fixation at our institution. Open fractures, metastatic path…

Impact of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery and Opioid-Free Anesthesia on Opioid Prescriptions at Discharge From the Hospital: A Historical-Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: The United States is in the midst of an opioid epidemic, and opioid use disorder often begins with a prescription for acute pain. The perioperative period represents an important opportunity to prevent chronic opioid use, and recently there has been a paradigm shift toward implementation of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols that promote opioid-free and multimodal analgesia. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of an ERAS intervention for colorectal surgery on discharge opioid prescribing practices. METHODS: We conducted a historical-prospective quali…

Comparative analysis on the effect of vagus nerve stimulation in reducing post-operative inflammation and enhancing recovery outcomes after surgery.

Excessive post-operative inflammation remains a major cause of complications, delayed recovery and prolonged hospitalization after major surgery. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the effect of perioperative transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) on inflammatory biomarkers and recovery outcomes in 90 patients undergoing elective abdominal and cardiothoracic surgery. Patients receiving taVNS demonstrated significantly lower IL-6, TNF-α and CRP levels, together with higher IL-10 concentrations, than those receiving standard care. The taVNS group also showed earlier ambul

Optimizing Recovery After Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Release Surgery: The Role of Counseling in Pain Management and Perioperative Functional Enhancement.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative patient education is pivotal in improving patient outcomes during the perioperative phase, involving a thorough explanation of what patients can expect. This enhances adherence and reduces perioperative anxiety. In orthopedics, carpal tunnel syndrome, a common and painful hand condition, is effectively managed through surgical release under local anesthesia. Inadequate counseling before such procedures may intensify intraoperative anxiety and increase pain responses. Thus, this research aims to investigate the effects of comprehensive preoperative counseling on various

Preserved Analgesia With Reduction in Opioids Through the Use of an Acute Pain Protocol in Enhanced Recovery After Surgery for Open Hepatectomy.

BACKGROUND: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathways are designed to restore baseline physiology, mitigate surgical stressors, and hasten recovery. Paramount to this approach is optimal pain control through multimodal analgesia and limiting reliance on opioid-based medications. Recent studies have fostered growing controversy surrounding the use of epidural analgesia in the ERAS setting, especially for higher-risk procedures. We examine the analgesic end points associated with the use of epidural within the ERAS framework for open hepatectomy. METHODS: From November 2013 through March …
