OBJECTIVES: Neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a severe gastrointestinal disease that primarily affects preterm and very low birth weight infants, with high morbidity and mortality. We aim to build a reliable prediction model to predict the risk of NEC in preterm and very low birth weight infants.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of medical data from infants (gestational age <32 weeks, birth weight <1,500 g) admitted to Maternal and Child Health Hospital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. We collected clinical data, randomly dividing it into an 8:2 ratio for training

BACKGROUND: In neonatal patients with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) the inflammatory response is mediated by a plurality of different proteins. The proteins olfactomedin 4 (OLFM4) and lysozyme (LYZ) are part of the intestinal mucosal defense and especially OLFM4 has rarely been evaluated in neonatal gastrointestinal diseases. The aim of this study was to analyze whether expression levels of both proteins of innate immunity, OLFM4 and lysozyme, were increased during NEC in neonates.
METHODS: Intestinal tissues of patients with NEC were examined with immunohistochemical staining of formalin-f

Objectives: Portal venous gas (PVG) was an important clinical sign in stage II or III necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in preterm neonates. Not a proper predictive indicator was found to predict the diseases (NEC with the presence of PVG) up to now. There is a need to put forward predictive indicators and compare the predictive effects among them. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of preterm neonates with NEC-PVG (n = 61) or NEC-non PVG (n = 62) from 2014 to 2021. Predictive indicators were put forward and determined by receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. An analysis of

BACKGROUND: Stressful events during infancy may predispose to the development of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) in childhood.
AIMS: To evaluate the association of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) with childhood FGIDs.
METHODS: We conducted a study, comparing 29 children of eight to ten years with a history of NEC with 58 children with no history of NEC. Subjects were assessed for FGIDs, based on Rome-III criteria.
RESULTS: Among 29 subjects with NEC, 17 had surgical and 12 conservative NEC. Subjects with surgically, or conservatively managed NEC developed FGIDs at a significan

To explore the clinical features and management of post-necrotizing enterocolitis strictures.Clinical data from 158 patients with post-necrotizing enterocolitis strictures were summarized retrospectively in 4 academic pediatric surgical centers between April 2014 and January 2019. All patients were treated conservatively in the internal medicine department. All patients underwent preoperative X-ray examinations, 146 patients underwent gastrointestinal contrast studies, and 138 patients underwent rectal mucosal biopsies. All of the patients were treated surgically.Of the 158 patients, 40 of the

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is an idiopathic, inflammatory bowel necrosis of premature infants. Clinical studies have linked NEC with antecedent red blood cell (RBC) transfusions, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Here we report a neonatal murine model to investigate this association. C57BL/6 mouse pups rendered anemic by timed phlebotomy and then given RBC transfusions develop NEC-like intestinal injury with prominent necrosis, inflammation, and submucosal edema/separation of the lamina propria in the ileocecal region and colon within 12-24 h. The anemic intestine is infiltrated

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to reveal the correlation between superior mesenteric artery (SMA) blood flow in the first 12 hours of life and the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in preterm neonates.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective study. There were 104 preterm neonates included in our study. The SMA blood flow of each neonate was measured during the first 12 hours of life if the hemodynamic situation was stable. The results of Doppler ultrasound were confidential to the neonatologists and nurses. All of the demographics, comorbidities, and outcomes were recorded and an

Observational studies demonstrating reduced rates of infections, necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), and mortality in preterm infants fed their own mother's milk, as opposed to formula, have prompted endeavors to achieve similar effects with the right choice of food and food additives. In a systematic review of meta-analyses and randomized controlled trials (RCTs), we considered nutritional interventions aimed at reducing the rates of infections, NEC, or mortality in very preterm infants. The overall effects of particular interventions were presented as risk ratios with 95% confidence intervals.

BACKGROUND: Only few studies have quantitated the frequencies of immune cells in the small bowel mucosa and submucosa during gestation. The aims of this study were to describe the frequencies of T and B cells, eosinophils and mast cells in the normal small bowel mucosa and submucosa (NSB) in relation to gestational age (GA) and in the uninvolved small bowel (USB) of premature newborns with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).
METHODS: We obtained 36 NSB specimens (GA 12-41 weeks) and 8 NEC-USB specimens (GA 24-32 weeks) from autopsies and surgeries and performed immunostaining for CD3, CD79a, BMK

BACKGROUND: Although partnering with parents is important to improving neonatal outcomes, no studies have investigated what parents are taught, remember, or experience when their child is afflicted with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).
PURPOSE: To characterize parental perceptions of communication and support they were given about NEC.
METHODS: An online survey was developed, reviewed for face validity, and then administered to parents whose child had experienced NEC. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and qualitative data were analyzed using a qualitative descript

BACKGROUND: Increasingly, evidence supports enteral probiotics are an important risk-reduction strategy for necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) among very low birth-weight and extremely low birth-weight preterm infants. Yet, the majority of providers remain reluctant to implement practice changes.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to better understand the discrepancy between the available evidence and clinical practice regarding the use of probiotics and other NEC prevention strategies in New Jersey.
METHODS: Using an exploratory descriptive design, a multimodal interprofessional survey was dev

IMPORTANCE: There has been a significant expansion in the number of low-level and midlevel neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in recent decades. Infants with necrotizing enterocolitis represent a high-risk subgroup of the very low-birth-weight (VLBW) (<1500 g) population that would benefit from focused regionalization.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the current trend toward deregionalization and to test the hypothesis that infants with necrotizing enterocolitis represent a particularly high-risk subgroup of the VLBW population that would benefit from early identification, increased intensity of e

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants represent a unique patient population that is born functionally immature and must accomplish development under the influence of a hospital environment. Neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is an inflammatory intestinal disorder affecting preterm infants. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the progression of intestinal microbiota community development between preterm infants who remained healthy compared to preterm infants who developed NEC.
RESULTS: Weekly fecal samples from ten preterm infants, five with NEC and five matched healthy controls were obtain

PURPOSE: Laparotomy is the preferred option for the surgical treatment of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC); however, laparoscopy may offer benefit, particularly when it is uncertain if the operation is necessary. Our aim was to review the current evidence for the use of diagnostic and therapeutic laparoscopy in NEC.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review of published literature (1990-July 2012) found in MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library Controlled Trials Register, and the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health reporting the use of laparoscopy for management of acute NEC was unde

Infants exposed to absent or reversed end-diastolic flow (ARE DF) in utero may be at an increased risk of developing necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). This article reviews placental function and the development of ARE DF. Studies examining the relationship between AREDF and NEC are reviewed, yet research remains inconclusive regarding this relationship. Recent studies reveal that early minimal enteral feeding does not increase the incidence of NEC in infants with AREDF. Initiation and advancement of enteral feedings should be monitored closely in this subset of the neonatal intensive care unit

AIM: The surgical management of multifocal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) remains a major challenge. The "clip-and-drop" strategy with a second-look laparotomy permits re-assessment of bowel viability after optimization, thus offering the potential of both improving survival and conserving bowel length. This study reviews the outcome of this strategy in a single regional center.
METHODS: Since 2000, NEC patients undergoing emergency laparotomy selectively underwent a "clip-and-drop" operation if there was peri-operative instability and/or multifocal disease with uncertain bowel viability. Bo

INTRODUCTION: Peritoneal drainage is one of the options for treatment in necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Currently its role is controversial as an alternative to laparotomy in low birthweight and mortality associated with both procedures is high (35-55%).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We reviewed 30 low-weight premature (< 1000 g) with NEC treated surgically. We evaluate the hemodynamic, respiratory and metabolic status of the patients, as well as multi-organ involvement and the need for inotropic drugs. These data were analyzed previos to surgery and at 6 and 12 hours. We divided the sample into tw

Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) is a metabolic disturbance resulting from severe thiamine deficiency classically described in malnourished alcoholics. Untreated, it can result in stupor, coma, and death. WE has previously been reported as a complication of pregnancy in women with hyperemesis gravidarum. We report a case of WE complicating pregnancy in a woman with chronic malabsorption secondary to premature birth and subsequent necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Our patient progressed through classic stages of WE before lapsing into a coma. She made a complete recovery after aggressive intraveno
