[Preparing for epidemics. A strategy for strengthening social science skills in Africa].

The Covid pandemic was a reminder of the need to be prepared for epidemics and pandemics and to take into account their socio-political dimensions by developing socioanthropological and interdisciplinary approaches. In the post-crisis era, the challenge is one of operationality. How can these dimensions be made more visible? How can we develop analyses that can help to humanize institutional responses, make inequalities visible to limit them during the crisis, reveal structural determinants of transmission, and define interventions that are scientifically sound, ethically just and respectful o…

Medical populism and the politics of dengue epidemics in the Global South.

With millions of cases and thousands of deaths every year in Asia and Latin America, dengue fever continues to be of global public health significance. This article uses the concept of 'medical populism' to analyse the political construction of the 2019 dengue epidemics in Bangladesh, the Philippines, and Honduras. Through this framework, we examine the narratives of these outbreaks by reconstructing how political actors simplified the discourse, spectacularised the crises, offered multiple knowledge claims, and forged divisions between the people and 'dangerous others'. Taken together, our ca…

Retinopathy of Prematurity: How to Prevent the Third Epidemics in Developing Countries.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is vasoproliferative disease affecting preterm infants and is a leading cause of avoidable childhood blindness worldwide. The world is currently experiencing the third epidemic of ROP, where majority of the cases are from middle-income countries. Over 40% of the world's premature infants were born in India, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Indonesia. Together with other neighboring nations, this region has unique challenges in ROP management. Key aspects of the challenges including heavier and more mature infants developing severe ROP. Current strategies includ

A systematic review of the prevalence of anxiety symptoms during coronavirus epidemics.

Coronavirus pandemics causes systemic and mainly pulmonary changes. We assessed the prevalence of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in pandemic survivors and the general population. Papers indexed by MEDLINE/PubMed, The Cochrane, Embase, Lilacs, Scielo, Psycoinfo, and Pepsic databases were searched to April 2020, using GAD and Coronavirus (CoV) infection as keywords. Sixteen studies with 25,779 participants in eight countries were included. A 46% pooled prevalence of anxiety symptoms (95% CI 33.9-58.2%) was found with significant evidence of between-study heterogeneity (Q = 154953, I2 = 99.99

Beyond Tsetse--Implications for Research and Control of Human African Trypanosomiasis Epidemics.

Epidemics of both forms of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) are confined to spatially stable foci in Sub-Saharan Africa while tsetse distribution is widespread. Infection rates of Trypanosoma brucei gambiense in tsetse are extremely low and cannot account for the catastrophic epidemics of Gambian HAT (gHAT) seen over the past century. Here we examine the origins of gHAT epidemics and evidence implicating human genetics in HAT epidemiology. We discuss the role of stress causing breakdown of heritable tolerance in silent disease carriers generating gHAT outbreaks and see how peculiarities in …

Fighting disease and epidemics: Ricardo Jorge and the internationalization of Portuguese science.

Ricardo Jorge was one of the principal doctors responsible for the sanitary transition in Portugal. He created and enforced the most important policies for disease control, both endemic and epidemic, which scourged the western world between the mid nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth. His professional training and academic and scientific performances reveal Ricardo Jorge's value in Portuguese science and his efforts for its internationalization. His capacities were confirmed by the emergency of the sanitary situations with which he was confronted and by the authorities' confidenc

[Wu Youxing and pestilential epidemics : a medical expert in late Ming China].

FACED WITH THE TERRIBLE MORTALITY OF THE EPIDEMICS DURING THE LAST YEARS OF THE MING DYNASTY: (1368-1644) AND THE INEFFICACY OF THE TREATMENTS APPLIED, WU YOUXING: (ca 1580-1660), the author of the Wenyilun (Treatise on warm factor epidemics), completed in 1642, proposed a new etiological explanation of these diseases, with a highly critical attitude towards his predecessors. Reception to the book was mixed; it sometimes encountered opposition due to the audacity of some of Wu Youxing's conceptions, but also, most likely, to the discrepancy between the author's assertions and the failures in a…

Seasonally varying epidemics with and without latent period: a comparative simulation study.

This paper studies two classes of epidemic models. These models are the standard SIR and SEIR models with time-varying periodic contact rate. The importance of the latent period is our target. When the latent period can be ignored and when it must be taken into account are the main points of our simulation. The comparison of the simulation results of our two models shows that the latent period is affecting the pattern of the dynamics of the disease. This paper addresses how model predictions are affected by the assumed form of the seasonally varying transmission rate and whether or not a laten

[The obesity epidemics--do diet pills have a place in the treatment?].

BACKGROUND: Many experts consider obesity a chronic disease that may require long-term therapy. A loss of 5-15% of body weight is associated with improvements in cardiovascular risk factors and morbidity. However, most studies show that the majority of patients who lose weight relapse. Patients may be unable to maintain a low energy intake when confronted with an almost limitless supply of food. Moreover, a number of physiological mechanisms favour a set point for body weight, that may be altered with anti-obesity drugs. MATERIAL AND RESULTS: In the current paper we describe actions and effec

Climate and satellite indicators to forecast Rift Valley fever epidemics in Kenya.

All known Rift Valley fever virus outbreaks in East Africa from 1950 to May 1998, and probably earlier, followed periods of abnormally high rainfall. Analysis of this record and Pacific and Indian Ocean sea surface temperature anomalies, coupled with satellite normalized difference vegetation index data, shows that prediction of Rift Valley fever outbreaks may be made up to 5 months in advance of outbreaks in East Africa. Concurrent near-real-time monitoring with satellite normalized difference vegetation data may identify actual affected areas.

Restriction enzyme analysis of Listeria monocytogenes strains associated with food-borne epidemics.

Listeria monocytogenes (serotype 4b) has caused four major food-borne epidemics in North America. In this study, L. monocytogenes isolates from the Nova Scotia (Canada), Boston (Mass.), and Los Angeles (Calif.) outbreaks were examined by restriction enzyme analysis with the endonuclease HhaI. Human isolates (n = 32) from the 1981 Canadian outbreak were compared with a strain recovered from coleslaw, which was epidemiologically incriminated as the vehicle of infection. After HhaI digestion, 29 of 32 isolates exhibited the restriction enzyme pattern of the reference coleslaw isolate. The restric…
