AGORA, a data- and biobank for birth defects and childhood cancer.

BACKGROUND: Research regarding the etiology of birth defects and childhood cancer is essential to develop preventive measures, but often requires large study populations. Therefore, we established the AGORA data- and biobank in the Netherlands. In this study, we describe its rationale, design, and ongoing data collection. METHODS: Children diagnosed with and/or treated for a structural birth defect or childhood cancer and their parents are invited to participate in the AGORA data- and biobank. Controls are recruited through random sampling from municipal registries. The parents receive questi

Exposure to Primary Air Pollutants Generated by Highway Traffic and Daily Mortality Risk in Near-Road Communities: A Case-Crossover Study.

Most epidemiologic studies fail to capture the impact of spatiotemporal fluctuations in traffic on exposure to traffic-related air pollutants in the near-road population. Using a case-crossover design and the Research LINE source (R-LINE) dispersion model with spatiotemporally resolved highway traffic data, we quantified associations between primary pollutants generated by highway traffic-particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than or equal to 2.5 μm (PM2.5), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), and black carbon (BC)-and daily nonaccidental, respiratory, cardiovascular, and cerebrovascular

Screening for anxiety symptoms using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Anxiety Scale (CESA) in a household sample in Brazil.

This study estimated the prevalence of anxiety disorders and analyzed the distribution and predictors of anxiety symptoms in Sergipe, Brazil, using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Anxiety Scale (CESA). A cross-sectional household survey was conducted with 1143 adults between the ages of 18-80. The CESA and sociodemographic and health questionnaires were administered. The CESA demonstrated strong internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.90). Overall, the prevalence of anxiety disorders was 13.8% (95% CI = 11.8-15.8), with agoraphobia (10.9%; 95% CI = 9.1-12.7) and social phobia (10.6%; 9

Investigating the Connection between Chronic Periodontitis and Parkinson's Disease: Findings from a Korean National Cohort Study.

Recent research suggests a potential relevance between chronic periodontitis (CP) and Parkinson's disease (PD), raising concerns about comorbid PD among elderly CP patients. However, the epidemiologic basis for this association remains unclear. Employing a nested case-control design, this study explored the association between CP and subsequent PD occurrences in Korean adults, leveraging a validated national population-based dataset covering the period from 2002 to 2019. It included 8794 PD patients and 35,176 matched control individuals, established through propensity score matching for age,

SIMLEP: a simulation model for leprosy transmission and control.

SIMLEP is a computer program for modeling the transmission and control of leprosy which can be used to project epidemiologic trends over time, producing output on indicators such as prevalence, incidence and case-detection rates of leprosy. In SIMLEP, health states have been defined that represent immunologic conditions and stages of leprosy infection and disease. Three types of interventions are incorporated: vaccination, case detection and chemotherapy treatment. Uncertainties about leprosy have led to a flexible design in which the user chooses which of many aspects should be included in th

The genetics of psoriasis.

BACKGROUND AND DESIGN: Psoriasis is a member of a class of common, HLA-associated conditions in which disease susceptibility appears to be heritable. However, the mode of inheritance of these diseases has been difficult to define in simple mendelian terms. Psoriasis displays one of the strongest HLA associations of this class of diseases. However, only a small fraction of those who carry the implicated HLA susceptibility alleles develop disease, and it has proven difficult to demonstrate that the HLA associations observed are due to formal genetic linkage between the disease and the HLA locus.

Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology Enhanced Prevalence and Incidence Criteria (STROBE EPIC): An Extension of the STROBE Statement.

Prevalence and incidence are fundamental metrics with numerous applications in epidemiology. The Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) guideline lacks specific items for reporting studies of disease prevalence or incidence. To address this gap, the STROBE Enhanced Prevalence and Incidence Criteria (STROBE EPIC) extension was developed in accordance with established methods for reporting guideline development. The authors generated an initial list of reporting items, conducted a modified Delphi process, and convened a face-to-face consensus meeting to con

Update on cardiovascular implantable electronic device infections and their management: a scientific statement from the American Heart Association.

Despite improvements in cardiovascular implantable electronic device (CIED) design, application of timely infection control practices, and administration of antibiotic prophylaxis at the time of device placement, CIED infections continue to occur and can be life-threatening. This has prompted the study of all aspects of CIED infections. Recognizing the recent advances in our understanding of the epidemiology, risk factors, microbiology, management, and prevention of CIED infections, the American Heart Association commissioned this scientific statement to educate clinicians about CIED infection

Local research ethics committees' approval in a national population study.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological research using patient records faces considerable uncertainty regarding requirements for local ethical review, confidentiality of data and patient permission. SETTING AND DESIGN: We report the experiences of the national study of clustering and geographical variation in anophthalmos and microphthalmos, which, from 1994, has been compiling a register of affected children born in England since 1988. The information is obtained from clinicians and local health authority records without any direct contact with patients or their families. RESULTS: Of 110 district healt

Acute effect of weight loss on levels of total bilirubin in obese, cardiovascular high-risk patients: an analysis from the lead-in period of the Sibutramine Cardiovascular Outcome trial.

Low levels of bilirubin are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular adverse events. Weight reduction is known to reduce several cardiovascular risk factors, but effects on bilirubin levels have not been reported. We studied the response of weight loss therapy with sibutramine and lifestyle change on levels of total bilirubin in an overweight or obese, cardiovascular high-risk population. Data from the first 4 weeks of the lead-in period of the Sibutramine Cardiovascular Outcome study were analyzed. A total of 10 198 patients provided body weight measurements before and after 4 week

Case series analysis of adverse reactions to vaccines: a comparative evaluation.

A modified cohort method has been proposed for estimating the relative incidence of rare adverse reactions after vaccination. The method requires only a sample of the cases, thus avoiding the need for following large population cohorts or selecting controls. This case series method has statistical power equivalent to that of the full cohort method when the risk periods after vaccination are short and vaccine coverage is high. The method also eliminates confounding by variables associated with both the outcome and avoidance of vaccination. In this paper, the cohort, case-control, and case serie

Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiomyopathy in Children.

Doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity in childhood cancer survivors is a growing problem. The population of patients at risk for cardiovascular disease is steadily increasing, as five-year survival rates for all types of childhood cancers continue to improve. Doxorubicin affects the developing heart differently from the adult heart and in a subset of exposed patients, childhood exposure leads to late, irreversible cardiomyopathy. Notably, the prevalence of late-onset toxicity is increasing in parallel with improved survival. By the year 2020, it is estimated that there will be 500,000 childhood c
