A conceptual and computational framework for modeling the complex, adaptive dynamics of epidemics: The case of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in Mexico.

In the quest to ensure adequate preparedness for health emergencies caused by infectious disease pandemics, there is a need for tools that can address the myriad relevant questions related to the spread and trajectory of pandemics. A hybrid intelligence model that combines human and artificial intelligence may provide a viable solution, as it can process data from models that comprehensively integrate contextual and direct factors, effectively mimicking the social processes surrounding transmission while incorporating human interpretation to enhance our understanding of pandemics. Using data f

Multiple Linear Regression Model of Meningococcal Disease in Ukraine: 1992-2015.

Estimating the rates of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) from epidemiologic data remains critical for making public health decisions. In Ukraine, such estimations have not been performed. We used epidemiological data to develop a national database. These data were used to estimate the population susceptible to IMD and identify the prevalence of asymptomatic carriers of N. meningitidis using simple epidemiological models of meningococcal disease that may be used by the national policy makers. The goal was to create simple, easily understood analysis of patterns of the infection within Ukrai…

Modelling the global spread of diseases: A review of current practice and capability.

Mathematical models can aid in the understanding of the risks associated with the global spread of infectious diseases. To assess the current state of mathematical models for the global spread of infectious diseases, we reviewed the literature highlighting common approaches and good practice, and identifying research gaps. We followed a scoping study method and extracted information from 78 records on: modelling approaches; input data (epidemiological, population, and travel) for model parameterization; model validation data. We found that most epidemiological data come from published journal

Relationships between serial blood lead levels and exfoliated tooth dentin lead levels: models of tooth lead kinetics.

Because bones and permanent teeth accumulate lead, exfoliated deciduous teeth have been utilized as retrospective markers of cumulative exposure in epidemiological surveys. In this paper we describe four models of lead uptake by the coronal dentin of shed primary teeth, each with different assumptions and ramifications. Each model is characterized by different relationships between blood lead at several ages and tooth lead. Values observed in our cohort of normal Boston children are most compatible with models positing the largest lead contribution coming at older ages (i.e., closer to age at

Rabies and canine distemper virus epidemics in the red fox population of northern Italy (2006-2010).

Since 2006 the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) population in north-eastern Italy has experienced an epidemic of canine distemper virus (CDV). Additionally, in 2008, after a thirteen-year absence from Italy, fox rabies was re-introduced in the Udine province at the national border with Slovenia. Disease intervention strategies are being developed and implemented to control rabies in this area and minimise risk to human health. Here we present empirical data and the epidemiological picture relating to these epidemics in the period 2006-2010. Of important significance for epidemiological studies of wild

Feasibility of assessing public health impacts of air pollution reduction programs on a local scale: New Haven case study.

BACKGROUND: New approaches to link health surveillance data with environmental and population exposure information are needed to examine the health benefits of risk management decisions. OBJECTIVE: We examined the feasibility of conducting a local assessment of the public health impacts of cumulative air pollution reduction activities from federal, state, local, and voluntary actions in the City of New Haven, Connecticut (USA). METHODS: Using a hybrid modeling approach that combines regional and local-scale air quality data, we estimated ambient concentrations for multiple air pollutants [e.

Potential of environmental models to predict meningitis epidemics in Africa.

OBJECTIVES: Meningococcal meningitis is a major public health problem in Africa. This report explores the potential for climate/environmental models to predict the probability of occurrence of meningitis epidemics. METHODS: Time series of meningitis cases by month and district were obtained for Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali and Togo (536 district-years). Environmental information (1989-1999) for the continent [soil and land-cover type, aerosol index, vegetation greenness (NDVI), cold cloud duration (CCD) and rainfall] was used to develop models to predict the incidence of meningitis. Meningitis i

Adaptation of multiple logistic regression to a multiple inverse sampling design: application to the Isfahan healthy heart program.

In observational and experimental studies in the health sciences involving human populations, it is sometimes considered desirable to recruit subjects according to designs that specify a predetermined number of subjects in each of several mutually exclusive classes (generally but not necessarily demographic in nature). This type of adaptive sampling design, now generally referred to as multiple inverse sampling (MIS), has received recent attention, and estimation methods are now available for several sequential MIS sampling designs. In this class of designs, subjects are sampled randomly and s

Chaos and complexity in measles models: a comparative numerical study.

Recurrent epidemics of measles in developed countries offer a proving ground for current theories of complicated dynamics in ecological and epidemiological systems. This paper contrasts the basic forced SEIR model for measles with a variety of more complicated and realistic models, showing that variations in seasonal forcing and age-structured mixing patterns can generate a wide range of global dynamics. The well-known chaotic dynamics of the forced SEIR model appear to be absent from more realistic models, suppressed by the buffering effect of a low-risk group of pre-school children. These re

Addressing the influence of unmeasured confounding in observational studies with time-to-event outcomes: a semiparametric sensitivity analysis approach.

In this paper, we develop a semiparametric sensitivity analysis approach designed to address unmeasured confounding in observational studies with time-to-event outcomes. We target estimation of the marginal distributions of potential outcomes under competing exposures using influence function-based techniques. We derive the non-parametric influence function for uncensored data and map the uncensored data influence function to the observed data influence function. Our methodology is motivated by and applied to an observational study evaluating the effectiveness of radical prostatectomy (RP) ver

Evaluation and testing of the proportional hazards assumption in analysis of time-to-event data in subgroup analysis of randomised controlled trials: a meta-epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: When Cox regression models are used to analyse time-to-event data, the proportional hazard assumption (PHA) must be reassured to obtain valid results. Transparent reporting of the statistics used is therefore essential to interpret research. This study aimed to assess the quality of statistical reporting and testing of the PHA in subgroup analysis of surgical randomised controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS: All published articles (see appendix 1) in the top quartile (25%) of surgical journals from 2019 to 2021 were screened in a literature review according to the ClarivateTM journal

A numerical evaluation of the economic tradeoff of vaccination against chikungunya virus in Brazil.

This article uses a compartmental model describing the dynamic of the chikungunya virus in populations of humans and mosquitoes with parameters fitted to the incidence in Brazil to estimate the economic trade-off of vaccination against the virus infection. The model uses time-dependent parameters to incorporate fluctuations in the transmission and the mosquito population across the years. Using the model predictions of symptomatic infections and literature data concerning the proportions of post-acute and chronic cases, the vaccination cost is compared with the disease cost. Numerical results

Numerical study on fractional order nonlinear SIR-SI model for dengue fever epidemics.

This paper focuses on a combined SIR-SI epidemic model to evaluate the transmission dynamics of dengue fever, integrating the susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) framework for the human population with the susceptible-infected (SI) framework for mosquitoes. The model is formulated as a system of nonlinear differential equations and is further extended by incorporating fractional-order derivatives in the Caputo sense to capture memory effects in disease transmission. A thorough investigation of the disease-free and endemic equilibrium points is conducted, encompassing both local and global sta

Applications of machine learning techniques to predict filariasis using socio-economic factors.

Filariasis is one of the major public health concerns in India. Approximately 600 million people spread across 250 districts of India are at risk of filariasis. To predict this disease, a pilot scale study was carried out in 30 villages of Karimnagar district of Telangana from 2004 to 2007 to collect epidemiological and socio-economic data. The collected data are analysed by employing various machine learning techniques such as Naïve Bayes (NB), logistic model tree, probabilistic neural network, J48 (C4.5), classification and regression tree, JRip and gradient boosting machine. The performance

Effect of Meteorological and Geographical Factors on the Epidemics of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease in Island-Type Territory, East Asia.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) has threatened East Asia for more than three decades and has become an important public health issue owing to its severe sequelae and mortality among children. The lack of effective treatment and vaccine for HFMD highlights the urgent need for efficiently integrated early warning surveillance systems in the region. In this study, we try to integrate the available surveillance and weather data in East Asia to elucidate possible spatiotemporal correlations and weather conditions among different areas from low to high latitude. The general additive model (GAM)

Abrupt transition to heightened poliomyelitis epidemicity in England and Wales, 1947-1957, associated with a pronounced increase in the geographical rate of disease propagation.

The abrupt transition to heightened poliomyelitis epidemicity in England and Wales, 1947-1957, was associated with a profound change in the spatial dynamics of the disease. Drawing on the complete record of poliomyelitis notifications in England and Wales, we use a robust method of spatial epidemiological analysis (swash-backwash model) to evaluate the geographical rate of disease propagation in successive poliomyelitis seasons, 1940-1964. Comparisons with earlier and later time periods show that the period of heightened poliomyelitis epidemicity corresponded with a sudden and pronounced incre

MUSIDH, multiple use of simulated demographic histories, a novel method to reduce computation time in microsimulation models of infectious diseases.

Microsimulation of infectious diseases requires simulation of many life histories of interacting individuals. In particular, relatively rare infections such as leprosy need to be studied in very large populations. Computation time increases disproportionally with the size of the simulated population. We present a novel method, MUSIDH, an acronym for multiple use of simulated demographic histories, to reduce computation time. Demographic history refers to the processes of birth, death and all other demographic events that should be unrelated to the natural course of an infection, thus non-fatal

A stage model of blood donor behaviour: assessing volunteer behaviour.

Are there valid stages to explain blood donor behaviour? Three studies (event contingent diary, interview and psychometric) are reported that address this question. Stage and process constructs from the transtheoretical model (TTM), past behaviour and intentions are measured. The qualitative studies demonstrated that blood donors describe their behaviour using TTM constructs. The psychometric study identified: (1) groupings of blood donors consistent with Ferguson's (1996) stage predictions; (2) TTM constructs varied meaningfully as a function of these groupings; (3) associations within cluste
