Angel-shaped phalango-epiphyseal dysplasia is characterized by the angel shape of the middle phalanx and severe coxarthrosis in adult life. This osteochondrodysplasia shows a further variety of heterogeneous multiple epiphyseal dysplasias. It also shows a late and dysplastic development of the femoral head that leads to osteoarthrotic changes with severe hip pain and gait disturbance. In this report, we show a 35-year-old female with Angel-shaped phalango-epiphyseal dysplasia that was treated by bilateral total hip arthroplasty. She has suffered from her coxalgia since she was 27 and since the

PTH/PTHrP receptor mRNA is down-regulated in epiphyseal cartilage growth plate of uraemic rats. Growth retardation, hypocalcaemia, hyperphosphataemia, and skeletal resistance to the action of PTH are well known features of advanced chronic renal failure (CRF). It has been suggested that the downregulation of renal and skeletal PTH receptors (PTH/PTHrP-R) could play an important role in the occurrence of these abnormalities. In the present study, four uraemic (4 weeks after 5/6 nephrectomy) and four control (sham-operated) rats were analysed for PTH/PTHrP-R mRNA expression at the proximal femor

A new regularity was established in a study of epiphyseal thyroid interrelationships: the opposite effect of the thyroid hormones (thyroxin and calcitonin) on the formation of methoxyindoles (melatonin, 5-methoxytryptamine) in the epiphysis. Thyroxin was shown to stimulate and calcitonin to inhibit O-methylation of serotonin in the pineal gland, and combined administration of both hormones levelled their action on one another. The inhibitory effect of calcitonin was more marked if a high basal level of melatonin was stimulated by preliminary administration of thyroxin. The authors assume that

A 24-month chronic feeding toxicity study with zinc dimethyldithiocarbamate (ziram) was performed on Fischer 344 rats of both sexes (80 animals/sex per group) at dietary levels of 0, 20, 200, or 2000 ppm. Eight animals of either sex from each group were sacrificed after 26, 52 and 78 weeks, and all surviving animals were killed after 104 weeks. Epiphyseal abnormalities in the long bones of the hind legs were observed in both sexes at 2000 ppm. Clinically, 3 male rats showed partial paralysis of the hind legs. At necropsy, marked curvature of the proximal end of the crus which could cause a res

In a heterogeneous group of 226 pregnant women, a retrospective study was done of the relation between the distal femoral epiphyseal ossification center detected by ultrasound and the birth weights of the infants. The ossification center of the femur was detectable in 202 of the 208 infants appropriate for gestational age; it was undetectable in 15 of the 18 infants small for gestational age. Because our results compared favorably with those reached by more complicated methods in the literature, we propose that the distal femoral epiphyseal ossification center be used as a screening test for i

We describe a brother and a sister with a syndrome of short stature, microcephaly, mental retardation, and multiple epiphyseal dysplasia. The parents were normal. This appears to be the second example of the syndrome first described by Lowry and Wood [1975] in two boys who had epiphyseal dysplasia, short stature, microcephaly, and nystagmus; one of these patients was mildly mentally retarded. The Lowry-Wood syndrome probably is an autosomal recessive trait.

The radiological results after caliper treatment of 45 hips with Coxa Plana are presented. The material was grouped and analysed according to the degree of primary involvement of the epiphysis by the necrotic process. It was found that the risk for deformation of the femoral head became significantly higher in the groups with more extensive involvement of the epiphysis. This observation shows that the primary involvement of the epiphysis has a determining influence on the results. It further indicates that if the radiographic results from different materials of Coxa Plana are to be compared co

BACKGROUND: Accurate distal screw length selection during volar plating of distal radius fractures is important to provide subchondral support while reducing the risk of dorsal cortical penetration. The width of the watershed line may provide an anatomical guide for screw selection.
METHODS: Fifty-one wrist CT scans (35 men, 16 women) were retrospectively analyzed. Watershed line width and distal epiphyseal screw lengths (B1-B5) were measured after virtual placement of fixed-angle volar plates. The relationship between watershed line width and screw length was assessed using linear regression

BACKGROUND: Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is an extremely rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis, a category of hematologic disorders characterized by the proliferation of foamy histiocytes. ECD predominantly affects adults, and pediatric cases with cerebral ventricular system involvement are exceptionally rare, with only a few previous reports. Moreover, epiphyseal involvement has not been characterized by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in children with ECD. Here we present a pediatric case of ECD involving both the cerebral ventricular system and epiphyses, highlighting diagnostic challeng…

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a benign medullary fibro-osseous anomaly that compromises the mechanical strength of bones, especially the long bones that bear strong mechanical stresses. It can lead to an inability to remodel immature bone into mature lamellar bone, resulting in inappropriate bone alignment in response to mechanical stresses. This case study describes a rare case of polyostotic FD presenting with an epiphyseal lesion of the proximal femoral head in its weight-bearing zone, accompanied by an unconventional femoral malrotation. The present case leads us to recommend that clinicians s

Multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED) is a congenital disease causing epiphyseal dysplasia in long bones. Herein, we report a case of a middle-aged man with bilateral knee joint locking symptoms who was diagnosed with multiple epiphyseal dysplasia caused by Matrilin-3 (MATN3) pathogenic variants and was successfully treated with arthroscopic loose body removal. A 48-year-old man has had bilateral knee pain since his twenties and underwent loose body removal of both knees in his thirties. He visited our hospital for worsening locking symptoms in both knees. Twenty years ago, his son had been diag

COL9A1 encodes the alpha-1 chain of type IX collagen heterotrimer, which is a vital component of collagen fibrils in hyaline cartilage. There are preliminary lines of evidence suggesting that COL9A1 mutations may be associated with autosomal dominant multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED), a disorder affecting the epiphysis of long bones. With only 2 reported cases (both from the same family) of MED in autosomal dominant COL9A1-related disorders (MIM 614135) in the clinical scientific literature hitherto, the phenotype is poorly understood at present. Here, we report the clinical and imaging find

OBJECTIVE: Chronic use of glucocorticoids during childhood can lead to a decrease in hormone release, including ACTH, GH, TSH, and LH, as well as reduced IGF-1 activity. This can result in osteoporotic changes and hinder growth in height. Resveratrol, an antioxidant with phytoestrogen properties, may improve bone health by increasing bone mineral density in postmenopausal women. It has been shown that resveratrol promotes osteoblastic bone formation and reduces osteoclastic resorption. We aimed to investigate the protective effects of resveratrol on the growth inhibition of the epiphyseal plat

Guided growth affects the physis in children to produce a desired effect. Several devices achieve alteration of growth, including staples, plates, and screws. Complications can include device failures, failure to modulate growth as expected, and unintended physeal arrest. We present the results of a unique technique designed to minimize these complications. This was a retrospective review of guided growth at the knee at a single institution utilizing cannulated screws with epiphyseal-entry points. Each case was reviewed to determine the presence of complications related to guided growth, inclu

BACKGROUND: Micro instability of the hip joint has been suggested to cause pain in patients with hip dysplasia. Recently, the Femoral-Epiphyseal Acetabular Roof (FEAR) index has been developed to evaluate hip instability in patients with dysplasia.
PURPOSE: To investigate associations between the FEAR index and patient-reported outcomes before and six months after periacetabular osteotomy (PAO).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Radiographs of patients with hip dysplasia who underwent PAO between 2018 and 2020 were retrospectively assessed by a radiologist and an orthopedic surgeon. Radiographic measure

BACKGROUND: Antegrade intramedullary nailing (AIMN) with Kirschner wire (K-wire) is a minimally invasive osteosynthesis technique. This procedure has been widely performed to treat the fifth metacarpal neck fracture (FMNF) in adults. This study was performed to determine whether using AIMN with a single K-wire to treat FMNF in adolescents would have good clinical and radiographic outcomes.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, 21 children (aged 11-16 years) with FMNF were treated using AIMN with a single K-wire from May 2017 to January 2020 in our hospital. Indications for intervention were s
