Kilowatt-class planar four-way gysel combiner with power-aware impedance optimization for L-band pulsed radar.

This work presents a compact planar four-way Gysel power divider/combiner designed for kilowatt-class coherent power combining in L-band pulsed radar transmitters. Unlike previously reported waveguide and coaxial Gysel architectures, the proposed planar implementation achieves a 3 kW peak output on an RO4003C substrate while maintaining low-loss, highly manufacturable microstrip construction. A power-aware full-wave electromagnetic optimization framework is introduced to refine characteristic impedances and electrical lengths, explicitly accounting for current distribution, thermal dissipation

Single-Fiber Hair Holder: a hair fiber mounting tool for advanced cuticle surface analysis.

Single fiber studies are essential to the development, testing and evaluation of new actives, formulations, and technologies in hair care. However, these studies have been constrained by the highly variable nature of hair fibers, as well as difficulties in their handling, making single fiber research expensive, time-consuming, low-throughput, and difficult to replicate. In response to this unmet need, a new tool, the Single-Fiber Hair Holder (SFHH), has been designed and developed to expedite and broaden accessibility of single fiber imaging and analysis studies; the current report outlines th

Bio-inspired terrain perception for snake robots: spectral analysis of vertical undulation and sidewinding.

While snake robots offer exceptional potential for exploration in confined and unstructured environments, their capacity for active adaptation is currently hindered by a lack of robust terrain classification. Inspired by the mechanosensory perception of biological snakes, this study proposes a proprioceptive terrain classification framework relying solely on a single uniaxial accelerometer. To capture the coupled robot-terrain interaction dynamics from the complex, non-stationary signals inherent in floating-base locomotion, we introduce the band-limited spectral magnitude feature, which quant

Design and validation of a stereotactic frame for independent bilateral multi-trajectory targeting.

Objective.Modern stereotactic neurosurgery increasingly relies on bilateral and multi-trajectory workflows (e.g. deep brain stimulation (DBS), stereoelectroencephalography (sEEG)), which can exceed the reach and flexibility of conventional frame-based systems. Building on our skull-mounted Navinetics D1 platform, we present a stereotactic frame (Navinetics E1) intended to expand the reachable work envelope, enable independent bilateral targeting, and preserve mechanical accuracy and patient comfort.Approach.We designed the Navinetics E1 stereotactic frame using a center-of-arc architecture wit

Design features in human joints with recommendations for humanoid robot design.

There are many types of moveable joint in the human body, with each characterised by compactness and high functionality. In contrast, humanoid robots typically use just three or four simple types of joint that are relatively bulky with limited functionality. Therefore, there is significant potential for bioinspired design. The paper describes 14 different types of moveable joint in the human musculoskeletal system and describes important design features such as linkage mechanisms, suspension systems and segmentation. In each case, recent examples of bioinspired design or potential for bioinspi

Principles of a Non-orthogonal Optical Surface with Potential for Correction of Irregular Astigmatism.

PURPOSE: Non-orthogonal lenses, in which the principal meridians of the cylinder surfaces are not perpendicular to each other, can be used to improve vision in the condition of irregular astigmatism. A procedure is developed that allows raytracing and image-quality analysis with such lenses. METHODS: A non-orthogonal surface was developed as a user-defined surface in the programme Ansys Zemax OpticStudio using a bi-cubic meridional mapping function. The function consists of two third-order polynomial sub-functions, each for mapping the actual 'on surface' meridian to an effective meridian tha

Hexagonal Multielectrode Design for Recording Local Electrograms With Superior Characteristics.

Electrograms recorded with a local coaxial reference offer advantages over bipolar electrograms for activation mapping but require more electrodes. We demonstrate that these coaxial electrograms can be recorded with a triangular local reference that can be efficiently created using hexagonal multielectrode grids. Triangular and cross-shaped local references recorded with a custom multielectrode were virtually indistinguishable. In contrast to bipolar electrograms, the morphology of the coaxial electrograms was insensitive to electrode orientation relative to the activation front, and the activ

Venous thrombectomy: Device landscape and applications.

Percutaneous mechanical thrombectomy (PMT) has emerged as a prominent treatment option for venous thromboembolism, offering advantages over catheter-directed thrombolysis and anticoagulation therapy, such as reduced bleeding risk and faster thrombus resolution. PMT devices operate through three main mechanisms: aspiration to directly extract thrombi, mechanical fragmentation to break thrombi into smaller pieces, and rheolytic disruption using high-pressure saline jets to dislodge and remove thrombi. This review summarizes the modern PMT device landscape, technical specifications, and indicatio

Variable Curvature Flexible Transducer for Abdominal Expandable Imaging.

Expanding the imaging field of view (FOV) of medical ultrasound transducers will more effectively detect pathological behaviors of tissues or organs. Conventional rigid transducers can be realized by increasing the number of array elements or the curvature; however, the imaging aperture is fixed by the original size and shape during the manufacturing process. This article presented a 128-element, 3-MHz flexible curvature abdominal array (FCAA) with the goal of dynamically expanding the FOV within a 120° range. The piezoelectric stack was divided into small pitches through a double-cut process,

Three-dimensional single beam nano-acoustic tweezer using ring-shaped ultrahigh-frequency ultrasonic needle transducer.

Acoustic tweezers use sound waves to manipulate bioparticles and cells, offering safety benefits due to ultrasound's deep penetration. However, traditional single-beam acoustic tweezers (SBAT) struggle with 3D trapping and spatial resolution due to strong axial scattering radiation forces and limited frequencies. Here, we address these challenges by developing a ring-shaped ultra-high frequency ultrasonic needle transducer (RS-UHF-NT), enabling 3D single-cell trapping, nanoparticle manipulation, and direct targeting. The transducer's ring-shaped design with a central hole minimizes near-field

Comparison of Novel Chest Seal Designs to Commercially Available Chest Seals at Relevant Physiological Pressures.

BACKGROUND: Tension pneumothorax is a leading cause of preventable death in combat scenarios. When treating a chest wound with the potential for open hemopneumothorax using a chest seal, it is important that it efficiently drain fluid from the chest cavity. We tested the ability of commercial and novel chest seal designs to drain fluid from a simulated chest wound. METHODS: Eight novel laminar chest seal designs were created and compared to six commercially available chest seals. Closed-cell foam with a hole was used to simulate a chest wound. Fluid pressures of 10, 30, and 100cmH2O were test

[Development of a balance device for anti-toppling in application of warm needling].

During the operation of warm needling, the needle may be tilted and bent to a large degree, which will cause high temperature of moxibustion on the skin surface around, and even burns in patients. To solve this problem, the team developed a balance fixator for acupuncture needle that can be used at acupoints in various parts of the body, such as on the abdomen, waist, limbs and face. The device is composed of 3 parts, including three (or more)-bifurcated sleeve, cushion pad, and circular fixed base-plate, forming an integrated structure. The three (or more)-bifurcated sleeve increases the cont

Development of a continuum manipulator with variable bending length and piecewise stiffness for transoral laryngeal surgery.

PURPOSE: Continuum manipulators (CMs) show great potential in transoral laryngeal surgery due to their flexibility. However, CMs for transoral surgery face several issues: large size, which reduces practicality; intersegment coupling, which causes undesired deflection; and a lack of versatility that limits their applicability across different patient groups. METHODS: This work combines a rod-driven proximal segment and a cable-driven distal segment to achieve piecewise stiffness, alleviating the issue of intersegment coupling. A rigid constraint tube is integrated into the proximal segment to
