The aim of the present study was to evaluate the prenatal detection of rare chromosomal autosomal abnormalities by ultrasound (US) examination. Data were obtained from 19 congenital malformation registries from 11 European countries, between 01/07/96 and 31/12/98. A total of 664,340 births were covered and 7,758 cases with congenital malformations were recorded. Rare autosomal abnormalities were diagnosed in 114 cases (6.6%) from a total of 1,738 chromosome abnormalities. There were a wide variety of autosomal abnormalities: the most common were deletions (33 cases), duplications (32 cases), t…

Surveillance for alveolar echinococcosis in central Europe was initiated in 1998. On a voluntary basis, 559 patients were reported to the registry. Most cases originated from rural communities in regions from eastern France to western Austria; single cases were reported far away from the disease-"endemic" zone throughout central Europe. Of 210 patients, 61.4% were involved in vocational or part-time farming, gardening, forestry, or hunting. Patients were diagnosed at a mean age of 52.5 years; 78% had symptoms. Alveolar echinococcosis primarily manifested as a liver disease. Of the 559 patients…

From May 1999 to May 2001, we made contact with injecting drug users from Eastern Europe in the healthcare and prevention service of the Red Cross (servicio de atención y prevención sociosanitaria [SAPS]) in Barcelona (Spain). The users attended free therapeutic centers, but paid approximately 500 e for the trip. The users were aged between 18 and 30 years old and maintained family contact. The knew the risk of disease transmission, but often exchanged needles. The prevalence of hepatitis C (92%) and B (62%) was high but less than that of HIV (19%). If they did not stop taking drugs their retu…

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: We investigated the influence of baseline characteristics of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) on prognosis and developed a multivariate Cox model predicting survival. All patients were from Central Europe.
METHODS: All 245 patients seen at the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Vienna, Austria, from July 1991 to March 1998 were included in this retrospective study. Nineteen different clinical characteristics and survival time from date of diagnosis were noted. Factors determining survival time were analysed by univariate and mul…

BACKGROUND: Public-health psychiatry is concerned, on the one hand, to ensure access to mental health services for all persons in need and, on the other hand, to advance knowledge of the social and environmental risk factors of mental disorders, and to establish a basis for preventive action. It is unclear how far current European Community (EC) policies will serve to achieve these objectives. This study aimed to review the mental health reform policies adopted in European countries since 1970, and to identify the main factors impeding progress in practice and research.
METHOD: The relevant p…

The paper examines, in respect of 12 Western European countries over a period of 20 years, the widely held view that any decline in their working population should be offset by greater reliance on immigrant labor. This research, based on demographic projections and forecasts regarding labor market participation rates by age and sex for each of the countries concerned, focuses on the two most likely scenarios. It appears that only Italy will be faced with a fall in its working population. All other western countries will either maintain the same level or, more generally, see their workforce gro…

Francisella tularensis subsp. tularensis is the common causal agent of tularemia in the USA and Canada, while F. tularensis subsp. palaearctica (holarctica) occurs in Europe, Asia, and to a minor extent in North America. F. tularensis subsp. mediaasiatica was found only in central Asia in a part of the former Soviet Union. Of the total of 155 F. tularensis strains isolated over the years 1978-1996 during the surveillance of tularemia in Slovakia, 65 were from small mammals, 68 from ticks and 22 from mites and fleas. They were characterized and classified by basic markers of infraspecific taxon…

A target has been set to eliminate measles, poliomyelitis, congenital rubella (as well as diphtheria and neonatal tetanus) from the 32 countries of the European Region of WHO by the year 2000. Achievement of this target will require achievement and maintenance of high levels of immunization coverage as well as strengthened surveillance and outbreak control. Use of combined vaccines and simultaneous administration of vaccines is a key component of achieving the goal.

The age- and sex-specific death rates of gastric and duodenal ulcer are followed in eight European countries over a period ranging from 30 to 60 yr. A cohort analysis demonstrates that the temporal changes of peptic ulcer mortality in the European countries seem to occur in a fashion characteristic of those due to changes in birth-cohort risks. Generations born at the end of the 19th century manifested a high risk of dying from gastric and duodenal ulcer. The birth-cohorts with a high risk for duodenal ulcer lagged 10-30 yr behind those with a high risk for gastric ulcer. Male and female cohor…

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) remain an often-underestimated challenge in European pig production, affecting animal health, performance, and economic outcomes. The predominant species, Ascaris (A.) suum, Oesophagostomum (O.) spp., and Trichuris (T.) suis, impair growth, feed efficiency, and carcass quality, whilst also contributing to reproductive losses and liver condemnation. Moreover, GIN can modulate host immunity, interfere with vaccine responses, and influence coinfection outcomes, thereby compromising overall herd health. The zoonotic potential of A. suum and T. suis further highligh…

Late Cretaceous Europe was an archipelago with a dinosaur fauna characterized by island effects such as low diversity, relictualism and insular dwarfism1. Its dinosaur communities include a unique mix of groups with typical Laurasian or Gondwanan affinities and distinctive endemics1. Chief among the latter are rhabdodontids, considered to be early-branching iguanodontians characterized by unusual dental and postcranial features and known from abundant but very incomplete fossil remains2,3. By contrast, unequivocal evidence of horned dinosaurs (ceratopsians) is puzzlingly absent4, despite their…

BACKGROUND: Dental care is important for oral health, but access to dental services is subject to social inequalities and varies between countries. Despite this, few cross-national studies have examined how public dental expenditure relates to dental service use among older adults. This study aimed to investigate the associations between public dental expenditure and dental visits among older adults using an international comparative design.
METHODS: Data were obtained from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE, Wave 8, 2019), covering 25 European countries and Israel, …

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) disproportionately affects people of African ancestry worldwide including those living in Europe and the United States (US), with overrepresentation among those with advanced CKD and kidney failure. This excess burden reflects the convergence of genetic susceptibility, including Apolipoprotein-L1 (APOL1) risk variants and sickle-cell-related nephropathy, with early-life factors such as low birth weight, high rates of hypertension and diabetes, and recurrent acute kidney injury from infections or environmental exposures. Social and structural drivers including pover…
