Adequate versus inadequate response to reading intervention: an event-related potentials assessment.

Three visual event-related potential components to the second of two sequentially presented words that rhymed or not discriminated children who improved (AR) from those who failed following (IR) reading intervention. Right hemisphere P100 amplitudes discriminated Typically Developing (TD) children from AR children but IR from AR children over left hemisphere sites. N200 amplitudes across hemispheres discriminated TD from IR children and AR from IR children. P300 hemisphere differences differentiated TD from AR and IR children. P300 amplitudes discriminated rhyming from non-rhyming words across

A dual-task analysis of resource allocation in dysthymia and anhedonia.

Research has shown dysthymic individuals to be hyporesponsive at various stages of information processing, yet it is not clear whether dysthymics are deficient in the amount of available attentional resources for information processing or, instead, in the allocation of those resources. To distinguish between these possibilities, the authors compared dysthymics to anhedonic and normal control Ss during the performance of memory tasks, under conditions of varying task priority and difficulty. Although there were no performance differences, dysthymics and anhedonics exhibited a consistently small

[Diagnostics and treatment of hepatic encephalopathy].

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) comprises a broad range of potentially reversible neuropsychiatric disturbances in patients with liver dysfunctions after exclusion of other neurological and/or metabolic causes. Impaired liver function may be due to acute hepatic failure, portal-systemic bypass without hepatocellular disease, or liver cirrhosis with portal hypertension. The insufficient hepatic detoxification results in accumulation of neurotoxic agents, in particular ammonia, which causes neurological disturbances by astrocyte swelling. Besides, inflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species a

[Event-related potentials and auditory sensory memory].

OBJECTIVE: Deficits in auditory short-term memory are thought to underlie developmental language disorders and dyslexia. There is, however, a lack of systematic studies of short-term memory in children at a young age. The aim of this study was to probe the duration of auditory sensory memory using objective methods in young children. METHOD: 37 two-year-old and 52 six-year-old normally developing children were included in the study. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were elicited in a passive auditory oddball paradigm with variable interstimulus intervals (ISIs of 0.5-5 s, depending on the subg

Impact of catechol-O-methyltransferase on prefrontal brain functioning in schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

The enzyme catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) has attracted increasing interest regarding a genetic disposition towards schizophrenias and as a modulator of prefrontal brain function. A common SNP in the COMT gene causes a Val to Met transition at AA158/AA108 (Val158Met), resulting in reduced COMT activity in Met allele carriers. An impact of COMT genotype on cognition has been well established; however, the exact nature of this influence has yet to be elucidated. The aim of this study was to determine whether COMT genotype affects an electrophysiological marker of prefrontal activation and n

Association between smaller left posterior superior temporal gyrus volume on magnetic resonance imaging and smaller left temporal P300 amplitude in first-episode schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: In chronic schizophrenia, the P300 is broadly reduced and shows a localized left temporal deficit specifically associated with reduced gray matter volume of the left posterior superior temporal gyrus (STG). In first-episode patients, a similar left temporal P300 deficit is present in schizophrenia, but not in affective psychosis. The present study investigated whether the left temporal P300-left posterior STG volume association is selectively present in first-episode schizophrenia. METHOD: P300 was recorded as first-episode subjects with schizophrenia (n = 15) or affective psychos

A controlled study of temporal lobe structure volumes and P300 responses in schizophrenic patients with persistent auditory hallucinations.

Recent studies of cerebral pathology in patients with schizophrenia have focused on symptomatological and electrophysiological correlates of reduced temporal lobe structure volumes. Volume deficits of the left superior temporal gyrus have been correlated with auditory hallucinations as well as to left-sided P300 amplitude reduction. However, caution is needed to interpret correlational data as evidence of a specific relationship. Therefore, a controlled study was undertaken on schizophrenic patients with and without auditory hallucinations. MRI-defined volumes of the left superior temporal gyr

Application of curcumin to heart failure therapy by targeting transcriptional pathway in cardiomyocytes.

Heart failure is one of the leading causes of death throughout the world. During the development and deterioration processes of heart failure, cardiomyocytes undergo maladaptive hypertrophy by altering hypertrophy-related gene expression. The zinc finger protein GATA4 is one of the transcription factors involved in the regulation of cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. In response to hypertrophic stimuli such as the synaptic nervous and rennin-angiotensin systems, GATA4 forms a large complex with various functional proteins including an intrinsic histone acetyltransferase, p300, and the disruption of th

P300 in schizophrenia: confirmation and statistical validation of temporal region deficit in P300 topography.

Comparison of normal and medicated schizophrenic groups on the auditory P300 component of the event-related potential confirmed our earlier finding of a left temporal deficit in P300 amplitude in schizophrenia. A difference in P300 topography between groups was evident in both color mapping and in grand-averaged waveforms, which was statistically validated by the presence of a group-by-scalp region interaction (p less than 0.05). The left temporal area in schizophrenics was denoted as the region of greatest deficit and of maximal statistical separation (p less than 0.05) relative to normals by

Information processing components of the auditory event related potential are reduced by cocaine.

The effects of cocaine on a human electroencephalographic event related potential (ERP) were measured. Forty-eight subjects received one of three IV doses (0.2, 0.4, or 0.6 mg/kg) and placebo. Thirty-three subjects received one of three oral doses (2, 3, or 4 mg/kg). All IV and oral doses reduced amplitude of the auditory ERP P200 and P300 components during the oddball task. P200 latency decreased. N100 amplitude was reduced only after IV administration. The changes in ERPs occurred during the period of peak cardiovascular and subjective effects. The amplitude reduction in ERP components occur

Age-related reduction of hemispheric lateralisation for spatial attention: An EEG study.

A group-level visuospatial attention bias towards the left side of space (pseudoneglect) is consistently observed in young adults, which is likely to be a consequence of right parieto-occipital dominance for spatial attention. Conversely, healthy older adults demonstrate a rightward shift of this behavioural bias, hinting that an age-related reduction of lateralised neural activity may occur within visuospatial attention networks. We compared young (aged 18-25) and older (aged 60-80) adults on a computerised line bisection (landmark) task whilst recording event-related potentials (ERPs). Full-

Reduced P3b brain response during sustained visual attention is associated with remote blast mTBI and current PTSD in U.S. military veterans.

Approximately 275,000 American service members deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan have sustained a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), with 75% of these incidents involving an explosive blast. Combat-related mTBI is frequently associated with comorbid mental health disorders, especially posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Attention problems, including sustained attention, are common cognitive complaints of veterans with TBI and PTSD. The present study sought to examine neural correlates of sustained attention in veterans with blast mTBI and/or current PTSD. In 124 veterans of Operations Endurin

Auditory P300 as a predictor of short-term prognosis in subjects at clinical high risk for psychosis.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate whether P300 could predict the short-term prognosis of subjects at clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis who do not convert to psychotic disorder (non-converters). METHOD: CHR subjects were examined with auditory P300 at baseline, and their clinical state was regularly assessed up to 2 years. 45 CHR non-converters were divided into remitter and non-remitter groups. Repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to compare baseline P300 between the two groups. Multiple regression analysis was used to identify factors predictin

Measurement of neural signals from inexpensive, wireless and dry EEG systems.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is challenged by high cost, immobility of equipment and the use of inconvenient conductive gels. We compared EEG recordings obtained from three systems that are inexpensive, wireless, and/or dry (no gel), against recordings made with a traditional, research-grade EEG system, in order to investigate the ability of these 'non-traditional' systems to produce recordings of comparable quality to a research-grade system. The systems compared were: Emotiv EPOC (inexpensive and wireless), B-Alert (wireless), g.Sahara (dry) and g.HIamp (research-grade). We compared the abil

Brain-computer interface (BCI) evaluation in people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) might restore communication to people severely disabled by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or other disorders. We sought to: 1) define a protocol for determining whether a person with ALS can use a visual P300-based BCI; 2) determine what proportion of this population can use the BCI; and 3) identify factors affecting BCI performance. Twenty-five individuals with ALS completed an evaluation protocol using a standard 6 × 6 matrix and parameters selected by stepwise linear discrimination. With an 8-channel EEG montage, the subjects fell into two groups in BCI

Longitudinal pilot-study of Sustained Attention to Response Task and P300 in manifest and pre-manifest Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: Earlier research has found cross-sectional attentional control deficits in manifest Huntington's disease (HD) using neuropsychological testing combined with simultaneous P300 registration. In the current pilot-study, we investigate attentional control in pre-manifest and manifest HD over a 3-year follow-up period. METHOD: Five manifest HD (MHD), 9 pre-manifest HD (PMHD), and 12 control subjects were included. Sustained Attention to Response task (SART) and P300 registration resulted in number of errors, reaction time (RT), and P300 amplitude and latency. RT change patterns surroun

The unstable bridge from stimulus processing to correct responding in Parkinson's disease.

It has been assumed that the basal ganglia implement links between stimulus (S) processing and motor response (R). It has also been proposed that the P3b component of the event-related EEG potential, which is usually as large in R- as in S-locked averages over trials, is a candidate marker to reveal integrity of S-R links. Therefore, the P3 complex (consisting of P3a and P3b) was here measured in averages over trials time-locked either to S or to the key-press R. P3b was expected to be equally large in healthy participants' R- and S-locked averages but to be smaller in R-locked than S-locked a

Behavioral and ERP evidence for amodal sluggish attentional shifting in developmental dyslexia.

The goal of this study was to examine the claim that amodal deficits in attentional shifting may be the source of reading acquisition disorders in phonological developmental dyslexia (sluggish attentional shifting, SAS, theory, Hari & Renvall, 2001). We investigated automatic attentional shifting in the auditory and visual modalities in 13 dyslexic young adults with a phonological awareness deficit and 13 control participants, matched for cognitive abilities, using both behavioral and ERP measures. We tested automatic attentional shifting using a stream segregation task (perception of rapid su

Higher-order brain processes, rather than early processing, underlie sensory problems in ME/CFS: evidence from ERPs.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME)/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) experience significant sensory problems that affect their personal, social and occupational life. However, there is no clear understanding of how the sensory problems manifest in ME/CFS. Neuroimaging studies have provided indirect evidence of the involvement of sensory brain areas in ME/CFS. This novel systematically examined the role of early sensory processing and late information processing brain systems in ME/CFS patients. METHODS: The participants consisted of 31 ME/CFS patients and 30 healthy match
