Enhanced recovery after surgery-based recovery room nursing improves perioperative safety in gastrointestinal tumor surgery.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal (GI) tumors are among the most prevalent malignancies, and surgical intervention remains a primary treatment modality. However, the complexity of GI surgery often leads to prolonged recovery and high postoperative complication rates, which threaten patient safety and functional outcomes. Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) principles have been shown to improve perioperative outcomes through evidence-based, multidisciplinary care pathways. Despite its widespread adoption, there is a paucity of research focusing specifically on optimizing ERAS-guided nursing proce

Stakeholder-Perceived Needs in Early Community Nursing Implementation: A Qualitative Study.

Background/Objectives: Health systems across Europe are increasingly challenged by population ageing, multimorbidity, and persistent inequities in access to care. Community Nursing has emerged as a promising approach to strengthening preventive, community-based services, yet evidence on stakeholder-perceived needs during early implementation remains limited. This study aimed to explore how different types of needs are perceived and articulated during the early implementation of Community Nursing in Austria. Methods: An interpretive descriptive qualitative study was conducted as part of an Aust

The impact of Shanghai's community nursing center policy on chronic wound care practice: a qualitative study.

OBJECT: This qualitative study explores how the community nursing center policy reshapes chronic wound care. It captures frontline nurses’ experiences to identify strengths and barriers, providing evidence for optimizing and scaling community nursing center models. BACKGROUND: Global aging and lifestyle changes have intensified the demand for chronic wound care, a service predominantly delivered in primary care settings. To strengthen community capacity, Shanghai has been establishing community nursing centers since 2023. While this policy represents a novel care model, its impact on nurses an

Competence areas for registered nurses and podiatrists in chronic wound care, and their role in wound care practice.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To identify general competence areas for graduating registered nurses and podiatrists providing chronic wound care. BACKGROUND: The provision of care for chronic wounds involves a team of multiple professionals, and registered nurses and podiatrists play an important role. However, previous studies have found that registered nurses have limited competence in wound care. In addition, there are no standardised international competence areas for the provision of chronic wound care by registered nurses and podiatrists. DESIGN: A qualitative design was used in this study. ME

Palliative and end-of-life nursing care in Saudi Arabia: A systematic review of nursing practices, challenges, and patient-family outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Palliative and end-of-life (EOL) care is gaining increasing importance in Saudi Arabia due to the rising burden of chronic and life-limiting illnesses. Nurses play a central role in delivering comprehensive, culturally appropriate palliative care; however, their practices are influenced by educational preparation, institutional support, and sociocultural and religious contexts. To date, evidence on palliative nursing care in Saudi Arabia remains fragmented and insufficiently synthesized. AIM: This systematic review aimed to synthesize existing evidence on palliative and EOL nursin

The role of nurse-performed ultrasound.

The integration of point-of-care ultrasound into nursing practice represents a significant evolution in bedside assessment within acute care settings. This point of view highlights the clinical and organizational value of nurse-performed ultrasound through a representative case and a broader discussion of its implications. We describe a patient presenting with abdominal pain and distension in whom a trained emergency nurse, using a focused point-of-care ultrasound protocol, promptly identified acute urinary retention, leading to immediate treatment and rapid symptom resolution. This example il

Peripherally inserted central catheters in children: a survey of practice patterns.

There is little published information describing standards of practice in the placement, use, and maintenance of peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) devices in children. A Web-based survey tool was designed to query these issues, and 72 intravenous therapy nurses from 72 hospitals provided complete responses to the survey. The respondents were predominantly (81%) from healthcare organizations inserting 40 or fewer PICC devices per month. These hospitals were equally divided in using 0.9% sodium chloride (USP) (saline) or heparinized saline flush to maintain patency, whereas 76% used

A Case Study of Comprehensive Postoperative Management for Elderly Total Hip Arthroplasty Patients Based on Peplau's Interpersonal Relationship Theory.

With a growing population of elderly patients undergoing hip arthroplasty, traditional nursing care often faces challenges dus to fragmented services and inadequate continuity. Based on Peplau's interpersonal relationship theory, we explored a comprehensive hospital-home-community management model for an 80-year-old female patient following total hip arthroplasty. This nursing model was structured into four sequential phases (orientation, identification, exploitation, and resolution) and incorporated a structured multidisciplinary team, a stepwise health education system, discharge preparation

Nurse retention in Europe: why economic evidence matters.

Europe faces a health workforce crisis with nurses comprising the largest occupational group affected. International organisations argue that nurse retention should be the priority response. However, Europe lacks economic evidence to inform evidence-based action on retention. A research gap exists with regard to European studies that quantify nurse turnover costs, provide comparative cost data across countries, or evaluate the cost-effectiveness of retention initiatives. Other high-income countries have measured turnover costs, demonstrating both the feasibility of such analysis and the financ
