Serial recording of visual and somatosensory evoked potentials in multiple sclerosis.

Pattern reversal visual evoked potentials (VEP) and short-latency somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) were recorded at frequent intevals in 7 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). A persistent increase in latency of VEP was found to accompany evanescent visual symptoms. SEP, whether normal or abnormal, remained stable in patients without relapse. In 3 patients with active disease the cervical SEP was labile but this could not be related to specific clinical changes. In 51 patients VEP were recorded on two or more occasions at varying intervals. There was a reasonable correlation between alt…

Monocular and binocular visual evoked potentials before and after cataract surgery.

Visual evoked cortical potentials (VEPs) were recorded from an individual with a mature cataract in one eye. Stimulation was both monocular and binocular and VEPs were obtained from three occipital scalp sites. Comparisons of recordings taken prior to cataract removal and after removal showed a dramatic increase in amplitude of potentials derived through stimulation of the affected eye. Slight differences in hemispheric amplitude prior to surgery suggest a greater degree of opacity in one portion of the affected lens.

[Recording of visual evoked potentials in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis].

The authors report the results of recording EVP obtained by pattern reversal in 20 controls and 43 patients with "established", "probable" or "possible" MS on the basis of MacAlpine's criteria. Whilst the latency of the wave 1 of the EVP appeared stable in the controls (107.5 msec +/- 7.46), lengthening of the latency of the EVP was seen in 77p. 100 of cases, confirming involvement of the visual pathways, though bulbar neuritis had been known clinically in only 28 p. 100 of patients. The value of this method of recording EVP in contributing to the diagnosis of DS is discussed.

[The visually evoked cortical potentials (VECPs) in optic neuritis (author's transl)].

The visually evoked cortical potentials (VECPs) were examined in 22 patients with optic neuritis. 1. In the acute stage, amplitude and latency time of the VECPs are impaired not only on the affected eye, but often also of the fellow eye. 2. A bilateral disturbance of the VECPs often persists in the recovery period, although psychophysical functions, including color vision remain normal. 3. It follows that in cases of unilateral optic neuritis, demyelinations without clinical evidence may occur in the optic nerve of the fellow eye.

Lateral line - evoked potentials (LLEPs): an effective tool for investigating ototoxicity.

Investigations of ototoxicity using the zebrafish lateral line system have focused on the morphology of neuromast sensory hair cells using vital dyes. As a complement to this approach, we demonstrate the utility of lateral line - evoked potentials (LLEPs). The LLEPs were acquired with a modified auditory evoked potentials physiological rig, using a dipole stimulus that was presented at a rate of 50 Hz. Fish were subjected to 0.002% and 0.003% gentamicin solution. Differences in LLEP thresholds were observed in treated versus control animals. These data indicate that LLEPs are an effective phys…

Developing a Calibration Method to Minimize Variability in Auditory Evoked Potentials.

PURPOSE: To reduce amplitude variability of auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) we developed a circuit that generates an electric calibration pulse (CalPulse) following each evoking sound presentation. We aim to determine if external CalPulse signals can function as a reliable calibration reference for AEP amplitude measurements. METHODS: The CalPulse circuit was integrated with an AEP recording montage. The amplitude and morphology of two CalPulse signals (square wave and sine wave) was first assessed in vitro with electrodes submerged in saline. Repeatability of the two signals was then compa…

Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials to Diagnose Vestibular Neuritis: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to explore the diagnostic value of Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (VEMPs) in people with Vestibular Neuritis (VN) with a specific focus on the differential contribution of ocular (oVEMPs) and cervical (cVEMPs) recordings. DATA SOURCES: A comprehensive search was conducted in December 2024 across PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library. Studies published in English and involving adult patients with suspected or confirmed VN and assessing VEMPs were considered eligible. REVIEW METHODS: The PRISMA-ScR guidelines were followed. Data were extracted rega

Characteristics of motor evoked potentials in patients with peripheral vascular disease.

With an aging population, it is common to encounter people diagnosed with peripheral vascular disease (PVD). Some will undergo surgeries during which the spinal cord may be compromised and intraoperative neuromonitoring with motor evoked potentials (MEPs) is employed to help mitigate paralysis. No data exist on characteristics of MEPs in older, PVD patients, which would be valuable for patients undergoing spinal cord at-risk surgery or participating in neurophysiological research. Transcranial magnetic stimulation, which can be delivered to the awake patient, was used to stimulate the motor co…

Effects of focal cortical cooling on somatosensory evoked potentials in rats.

Although the focal brain cooling technique is widely used to examine brain function, the effects of cortical temperature at various levels on sensory information processing and neural mechanisms remain underexplored. To elucidate the mechanisms of temperature modulation in somatosensory processing, this study aimed to examine how P1 and N1 deflections of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) depend on cortical temperature and how excitatory and inhibitory inputs contribute to this temperature dependency. SEPs were generated through electrical stimulation of the contralateral forepaw in anesth…

Influence of Cochlear Anatomy on Intraoperative Electrically Evoked Compound Action Potentials.

Objective: The electrically evoked compound action potential (ECAP) is an objective measure to indirectly assess spiral ganglion neurons. The ECAP provides inputs about the prognoses of cochlear implant (CI) recipients. Several factors such as cochlear morphology can affect ECAP measurements. This study aims to investigate the variation effect of cochlear parameters on intraoperative ECAP thresholds. Methods: This is a retrospective study on patients who underwent CI surgery with normal inner ear morphology at our center between 2017 and 2023. Cochlear anatomical parameters, including diameter

Changes in the Parameters of Visual Evoked Potentials in Media Opacities.

PURPOSE: This study compared flash visual evoked potentials (VEPs) parameter differences between eyes with unilateral opaque media and their normal contralateral counterparts. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We included 178 patients with unilateral media opacity and normal contralateral eye in each patient. The diseased eyes had normal ultrasonographic findings and were candidates for keratoplasty or anterior segment reconstruction. The patients underwent electrophysiological testing by the flash VEPs recording with the use of 1.4Hz (transient) and 8Hz (flicker) frequencies. RESULTS: The medians of P2…

Transcranial electrical stimulation technique for induction of unilateral motor evoked potentials.

OBJECTIVE: Transcranial electrical stimulation motor evoked potentials (TES-MEP) are widely used to monitor motor function; however, broad current spread and induced body movement are limitations of this technique. We herein report a localized stimulation technique for TES-MEP that induces unilateral MEP responses. METHODS: The stimulation of C1(+)-C4(-) or C2(+)-C3(-) was performed to induce right- or left-sided muscle contraction, respectively, in 70 patients. Electromyography was recorded by placing electrodes on the bilateral abductor pollicis brevis (APB) and abductor hallucis (AH) muscl…

Classification of electrically-evoked potentials in the parkinsonian subthalamic nucleus region.

Electrically evoked compound action potentials (ECAPs) generated in the subthalamic nucleus (STN) contain features that may be useful for titrating deep brain stimulation (DBS) therapy for Parkinson's disease. Delivering a strong therapeutic effect with DBS therapies, however, relies on selectively targeting neural pathways to avoid inducing side effects. In this study, we investigated the spatiotemporal features of ECAPs in and around the STN across parameter sweeps of stimulation current amplitude, pulse width, and electrode configuration, and used a linear classifier of ECAP responses to pr

Plasticity of visual evoked potentials in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1.

OBJECTIVE: The inability to properly process visual information has been frequently associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Based on animal studies, the cause of cognitive disabilities in NF1 is hypothesized to arise from decreased synaptic plasticity. Visual cortical plasticity in humans can be investigated by studying visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in response to visual stimulation. METHODS: VEP plasticity was assessed by measuring the increase of the peak amplitudes C1, P1, and N1 induced by 10-min modulation of checkerboard reversals in 22 adult NF1 patients and 30 controls. VEP …

The reference intervals of intraoperative posterior tibial nerve somatosensory evoked potentials.

BACKGROUND: A reference interval exists for posterior tibial nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (PTN-SEPs) in awake. However, the reference interval for intraoperative- PTN-SEPs (I-PTN-SEPs) remains unclear. As a substitute for PTN-SEPs in awake, we considered I-PTN-SEPs can provide functional information about the dorsal somatosensory system. No report evaluated the physiologic and analytical issues in the measurement of I-PTN-SEPs. We investigated the sources of variation and reference intervals for I-PTN-SEPs. METHODS: We studied 143 patients with unilateral radiculopathy and without ne…

Reliability of diaphragmatic motor-evoked potentials induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation.

The diaphragmatic motor-evoked potential (MEP) induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) permits electrophysiological assessment of … ural impulse conduction along the cortico-diaphragmatic pathway. The reliability of diaphragm motor-evoked potentials (MEP) induced by TMS is unknown. Notwithstanding large variability in MEP amplitude, we found good-to-excellent reproducibility of all MEP characteristics (latency, duration, amplitude, and area) both within- and between-day in healthy adult men and …
