Tuberous sclerosis: clinicopathologic features and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberous sclerosis is a hamartoneoplastic syndrome, which may involve multiple organ systems. Oral hard tissue manifestations of the syndrome have been described in the literature only as recently as 1955. Patients who presented with clinical manifestations of tuberous sclerosis did not routinely undergo oral surveys to rule out 'lesions', and consequently data on 'lesions' in the maxillofacial complex is scant. Ten cases have been found in the English language literature, which describe maxillofacial 'lesions', which may be tumours, new growths, neoplasms or overgrowths occurrin

Regional macrodontia and regional bony enlargement associated with congenital infiltrating lipomatosis of the face presenting as unilateral facial hyperplasia. Brief review and case report.

Congenital infiltrating lipomatosis of the face (CIL-F) is a rare lesion. Presented here is a review of the literature concerning this condition, with the report of a case with clinical signs indistinguishable from those of unilateral facial hyperplasia. Previously unreported clinical and radiographic features of regional bony hypertrophy and macrodontia associated with this case of CIL-F are described and the proposition raised that previously reported cases of unilateral facial hyperplasia may have been due to CIL-F. It is suggested that the clinical findings in this case of facial asymmetry

Isolated Lymphomatoid Granulomatosis of the Central Nervous System Mimicking Trigeminal Neuropathy, Bell's Palsy, and Glioblastoma in an Epstein-Barr-Negative Immunocompetent Host: A Case Report.

Lymphomatoid granulomatosis is an Epstein-Barr virus-associated lymphoproliferative B-cell neoplasm that typically involves multiple organ systems. This disease is exceedingly rare when confined to the central nervous system (CNS), usually presenting as a mass lesion or diffuse disease, with no existing standard of care. We present the case of a 67-year-old patient who had a unique and insidious course of isolated CNS lymphomatoid granulomatosis. The disease first presented with cranial neuropathies involving the trigeminal and facial nerves that were responsive to steroids both clinically and

Sinonasalteratocarcinosarcoma: a report of two cases and clinicopathological analysis.

Sinonasalteratocarcinosarcoma (SNTCS) is a highly malignant and aggressive neoplasm which can quickly damage the local soft tissue, bone tissue, and invade orbital and intracranial tissues. It also can result in local lymph node and distant organ metastasis. The data from 2 cases of SNTCS from the First Affiliated Hospital of Bengbu Medical College (China), treated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy followed by cranio-facial resection, were analyzed since 2016. The main symptoms of the two patients were of the nasal cavity with nasal congestion and runny nose. There was no recurrence after sur

Denervation of the Tensor Veli Palatini Muscle and Effusion in the Tympanic Cavity.

An English springer spaniel was presented for right-sided atrophy of the muscles of mastication, analgesia and paralysis of the face, and vestibular dysfunction. Neurological signs were consistent with a lesion involving the pons and rostral medulla resulting in deficits in the function of the trigeminal, facial, and vestibular nerves. MRI disclosed a right-sided extraparenchymal mass consistent with a trigeminal nerve sheath neoplasm that was compressing and invading the pons and medulla. Atrophy of the muscles of mastication, innervated by the trigeminal nerve, was also observed on MRI. Addi

[Resection of nasopharyngeal mucoepidermoid carcinoma using the maxillary swing approach].

Mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MECs) are a common neoplasm of the minor salivary glands. However, nasopharyngeal MECs are an extremely rare entity. We describe herein our experience in the resection of a nasopharyngeal MEC using the maxillary swing approach (MSA). A 42-year-old man was referred to our institute complaining of a feeling of fullness in his left ear. The tumor was found to localized in the nasopharynx. The ragiological findings showed a solid, 30 x 27 x 26mm tumor lying on the lateral wall of the nasopharynx. The histological examination revealed MEC. The tumor was removed with maxil

Intraparenchymal papillary meningioma of brainstem: case report and literature review.

Both intraparenchymal papillary meningioma and papillary meningioma with cyst formation of brainstem have never been reported. The authors present an extremely rare case of patient with intraparenchymal papillary meningioma of brainstem. A 23-year-old Chinese male presented with a 4-month history of progressive left upper limb and facial nerve palsy. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a cystic-solid, heterogeneously enhancing mass in pons and right cerebral peduncle with no dural attachment. The tumor was totally removed via subtemporal approach. During surgery, the lesion was found to be com

Highly malignant submandibular extraskeletal osteosarcoma in a young patient.

Osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignant neoplasm of the bone. Rarely, osteosarcomas occur at sites other than the bone, so-called extraskeletal osteosarcoma (ESOS). ESOS is a rare malignancy that accounts for approximately 1% of all tissue sarcomas and present most commonly as a large soft tissue mass in the extremities. The patient was an 18-year-old Japanese man who presented with a stony hard mass in the left submandibular region. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy could not be performed due to the firmness of the mass. The patient underwent left selective neck dissection after enlarge

Carotid body tumours: the University of Alberta Hospital experience.

At the University of Alberta Hospital between 1950 and 1988, 17 patients who had a diagnosis of carotid body tumour were seen; 15 of them were followed up for an average of 8 years (range from 1 to 38 years). In 14 patients the tumour was removed surgically. There were no operative deaths and no strokes occurred. The most frequent complication was cranial nerve deficit. Of the 15 patients followed up, 10 (67%) manifested a deficit of the facial, vagus or hypoglossal nerve. The primary tumour was diagnosed histologically as a benign neoplasm in all 14 patients operated on, but in 3 distant meta

[Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of major salivary glands--a clinicopathologic review].

BACKGROUND: Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common neoplasm of the major salivary glands. There are three subtypes of malignant PA: carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA); carcinosarcoma (true malignant mixed tumor) and metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma. The most common subtype of malignant PA is CXPA which develops in primary or recurrent PA. For proper diagnosis of CXPA, a statement of coexistence of pleomorphic adenoma and carcinoma (or carcinoma after prior PA surgery) is needed. Own material is presented because of rarity and clinicopathologic specificity of this neoplasm. METHODS:

Delayed Diagnosis of Primary Sinonasal Mucosal Melanoma.

Primary sinonasal mucosal melanoma (SNMM) is a rare and highly aggressive malignancy that is frequently diagnosed at advanced stages because of its nonspecific presentation. We report the case of a 70-year-old Peruvian woman who presented with a six-month history of recurrent unilateral epistaxis refractory to direct compression, chemical cauterization, and nasal packing, associated with progressive nasal obstruction, facial pain, foul-smelling nasal discharge, and significant weight loss. Nasofibrolaryngoscopy revealed a friable pigmented mass arising from the left nasal cavity. Computed tomo

Chordoma and meningioma arising as a collision tumor in the petroclival region: Case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: The co-existence of two independent brain tumors at the same anatomical site is rare and occurs as a "collision tumor" or "tumor-to-tumor metastasis." In intracranial location, meningioma is the most common neoplasm in such coincidences. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a case involving a 31-year-old woman with a complex tumor consisting of chordoma and meningioma in the petroclival region. The patient presented with left facial numbness, ataxia, and left-sided hemiparesis. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a well-demarcated, intradural, extra-axial tumor mas

Excision of a sclerosing polycystic adenosis of the deep parotid gland.

A 15-year-old male presented to the hospital with a 2-month history of a right parotid mass. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an encapsulated 3.7 cm mass. Fine-needle aspiration suggested a monomorphic adenoma (prior to utilization of the Milan Classification system). Total parotidectomy was performed with dissection and preservation of the facial nerve. Surgical pathology identified the lesion as sclerosing polycystic adenosis (SPA) after examining the histopathological and immunohistochemistry findings. SPA is a rare lesion which leads to inflammatory changes in the salivary gland. The mo

Basal cell carcinoma associated with non-neoplastic cutaneous conditions: a comprehensive review.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) can be a component of a collision tumor in which the skin cancer is present at the same cutaneous site as either a benign tumor or a malignant neoplasm. However, BCC can also concurrently occur at the same skin location as a non-neoplastic cutaneous condition. These include autoimmune diseases (vitiligo), cutaneous disorders (Darier disease), dermal conditions (granuloma faciale), dermal depositions (amyloid, calcinosis cutis, cutaneous focal mucinosis, osteoma cutis, and tattoo), dermatitis, miscellaneous conditions (rhinophyma, sarcoidal reaction, and varicose vein

A large basal cell adenoma extending to the ipsilateral skull base and mastoid in the right parotid gland: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Basal cell adenoma (BCA) is a rare benign tumour that has unique histological characteristics and primarily arises in the parotid glands. According to published reports, nearby tissue destruction by BCA seems impossible. CASE SUMMARY: We presented a case of a 54-year-old woman with a mass in the deep lobe of the right parotid gland involving the ipsilateral skull base and mastoid. The patient exhibited gradual right facial swelling but no other obvious symptoms. Combined resection of the total right parotid gland and partial skull base excision were performed. The biopsy conducted

Trastuzumab Emtansine for the Treatment of HER-2 Positive Carcinoma Ex-pleomorphic Adenoma Metastatic to the Brain: A Case Report.

Background: Carcinoma Ex-pleomorphic adenoma is a malignant transformation of the common benign neoplasm of the salivary glands, "pleomorphic adenoma." Only two cases were ever reported with brain metastases, with absence of good evidence guiding management of such cases. Case Presentation: A 61-year-old woman presenting with facial paralysis was found to have carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland. Twenty months after local treatment, she developed brain metastases, treated with whole brain radiation therapy. The patient then had progressive intracranial disease after the end o

Adenoid cystic carcinoma presenting with bilateral orbital extension from the soft palate.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare neoplasm of secretory epithelium that most commonly occurs in the fifth and sixth decades of life. It is characterized by high recurrence rates and poor response to chemotherapy, In the orbit, ACC usually presents as a lacrimal gland mass. We describe the rare case of a 70-year-old woman who presented with pain during mastication and bilateral facial numbness in the cranial nerve V2 distribution. She was found to have adenoid cystic carcinoma involving the orbits bilaterally without lacrimal gland involvement and without a clear primary tumor. Imaging s
