A family with X linked inheritance of mental retardation (XLMR) is presented. There are 10 mentally retarded males and two affected females in two generations. The relationship between family disruption early in life and subsequent drinking in young adulthood was examined in a large representative British sample. Contrary to popular belief, parental loss was not an antecedent to heavy drinking in young adults. This finding was observed within social class of origin groups and when the nature and timing of the disruption were considered separately.

PURPOSE: To examine the importance of self-reported family history of uterine leiomyoma (fibroids) as a marker of risk.
METHODS: Women, aged 35 to 49, were randomly selected from the membership of a large, urban health plan. Participants completed a self-administered questionnaire about family history of fibroids. Ultrasound screening for fibroids followed, regardless of whether participants had been previously diagnosed (660 black, 412 white). Plasma prealbumin was isolated from individuals in 3 kindreds from Brazil with biopsy proven heredofamilial amyloidosis as well as from a number of asymptomatic family members. Differential glomerular cell counts and measurements of glomerular diameter were made in 13 children with Alport's syndrome (AS), four with benign familial haematuria (BFH) and 15 with nonfamilial haematuria (NFH). Mesangial cellularity was increased in the six cases of NFH with diffuse mesangial deposits of IgA (IgA +). Using first-principles density functional theory, we design and systematically investigate a family of highly stable Janus XHfPH (X = S, Se, Te) monolayers.
