Necrotizing fasciitis after placement of intraperitoneal catheter.

•Necrotizing fasciitis has not previously been reported in association with placement of intraperitoneal port at time of cytoreductive surgery.•Consensus is lacking regarding the placement of intraperitoneal ports at the time of bowel surgery.•Delayed placement of intraperitoneal ports may be considered in patients undergoing bowel resection.

Antisynthethase syndrome presenting as peripheral limb fasciitis.

Inflammatory myopathy is a major clinical manifestation of the antisynthetase syndrome. Patients with anti Jo-1 antibodies can also present with other clinical manifestations as arthritis, mechanic's hands and lung fibrosis. As in dermatomyositis, polymyositis and overlap myopathies proximal muscle of the limbs are preferentialy involved. Associated fascia edema on magnetic resonance imagery studies with histological proven fasciitis has been reported. However peripheral limb involvement, reported here in two patients, as the isolated initial manifestation is unusual.

Breast necrotising fasciitis managed by partial mastectomy.

We present the case of a 75-year-old woman who presented with extensive breast cellulitis, which was thought to be secondary to a deep breast abscess. On admission the patient underwent debridement of the breast and broad-spectrum intravenous antibiotics were administered. However, during hospitalisation she developed sepsis, acute renal failure and required further debridements for the rapidly spreading necrotising fasciitis. Subsequently, a partial mastectomy was performed and the patient made an overall good postoperative recovery.

Facial necrotizing fasciitis from an odontogenic infection.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is defined as rapidly progressive necrosis of subcutaneous fat and fascia. It is a rare but life-threatening infection characterized by a progressive, usually rapid, necrotizing process of the subcutaneous tissues and fascial planes. The condition is commonly described in the extremities, abdominal wall, and perineum but rarely seen in the head and neck. The diagnosis of NF depends mainly on clinical features, which are not always observable, so that the disease is often diagnosed late in its course, resulting in high mortality. Broad-spectrum antibiotics, aggressive…

Hospital epidemiology of emergent cervical necrotizing fasciitis.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a surgical emergency. It is a rapidly progressing infection of the fascia and subcutaneous tissue and could be fatal if not diagnosed early and treated properly. NF is common in the groin, abdomen, and extremities but rare in the neck and the head. Cervical necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) is an aggressive infection of the neck and the head, with devastating complications such as airway obstruction, pneumonia, pulmonary abscess, jugular venous thrombophlebitis, mediastinitis, and septic shock associated with high mortality. AIM: To assess the presentation,…

Imaging of necrotizing fasciitis: self-assessment module.

The educational objectives for this self-assessment module are for the participant to exercise, self-assess, and improve his or her understanding of the clinical and imaging features of necrotizing fasciitis and the role of imaging in the clinical management of patients with necrotizing fasciitis.

Fulminant necrotizing fasciitis due to Vibrio parahaemolyticus.

Necrotizing soft-tissue infection due to Vibrio parahaemolyticus is unusual. We report a case of necrotizing fasciitis due to V. parahaemolyticus in a 92-year-old woman with a history of chronic renal failure, diabetes mellitus and malnutrition. Clinical evolution was fulminant and the patient died 6 h after admission. A review of all cases previously reported showed that the infection occurred in patients with underlying diseases through ingestion of raw oysters or inoculation via traumatic injury in marine environments. The mortality rate of all reviewed cases was 42.8 %. In conclusion, V. p…

[Necrotizing fasciitis caused by group G streptococci].

Necrotizing fasciitis is a soft tissue infection which is highly lethal. Its lethality can only be reduced by early diagnosis and radical débridement. A delayed diagnosis will result in streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. Any surgery neglecting radical débridement up to amputation is inadequate and cannot reduce lethality. This paper reports on two cases of necrotizing fasciitis of the leg caused by group G streptococci.

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis due to bacterial tonsillitis.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe and potentially fatal soft tissue infection, but involvement of the head and neck is rare. We report on 4 cases of cervical necrotizing fasciitis arising from tonsillitis. One patient was diabetic and one had received steroids before disease development. One patient developed acute respiratory failure and died of septic shock. Three patients recovered, helped by early recognition, aggressive surgical intervention, appropriate broad-spectrum antibiotics, and supportive therapy. The common bacteria found in all abscess samples were Streptococcus sp., but mixed f…

[Face necrotizing fasciitis following spinocellular epithelioma excision].

Necrotizing fasciitis is a bacterial dermo-hypodermitis with superficial aponevrosis necrosis due to Streptococcus pyogenes. Head and neck region are some rare localization of this infection especially after surgery. We report herein a case of a face necrotizing fasciitis following minor face surgery. A 86 year-old Caucasian male without any antecedents, nor treatment, has been operated for a fronthead spinocellular epithelioma under local anesthesia. Twelve hours later, a severe pain localized to the face occurred, with sleeplessness, followed up with a face orbitary oedema and fever. Twenty-…

Necrotizing fasciitis. Role of early surgical intervention.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate our experience of management of necrotizing fasciitis (NF) particularly the role of early and aggressive surgical intervention. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of the cases affected by this disease and managed at Riyadh Medical Complex, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, during 5 calendar years from 1996 through to 2000 (1416-1420 A.H). The preoperative and operative data was collected, and postoperative morbidity and mortality were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 25 cases of NF were treated during the 5-year period, 18 were males and 7 female. The majority of pati…

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis with facial nerve paralysis.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a very aggressive infection with associated high mortality. Risk factors of acquiring this infection may include diabetes mellitus, surgery, trauma, and infection. This infection necessitates prompt recognition and aggressive management in order to avoid its unfavourable outcomes. Associated nerve paralysis may indicate the involvement of deeper tissue. The present report highlights a case of cervical NF that was complicated by facial nerve paralysis, a feature that has rarely been reported.

Heel pain-plantar fasciitis and Achilles enthesopathy.

Plantar fasciitis and Achilles enthesopathy are two of the most common causes of posterior heel pain. In the vast majority of cases, nonsurgical treatment methods are effective. In recalcitrant cases, surgery has been shown to be generally effective. There are a variety of described techniques for both conditions. Endoscopic treatment of plantar fasciitis leads to slightly enhanced recovery times compared with the traditional open release, but in the long term the results seem to be equivalent. Open debridement of the retrocalcaneal bursa, calcaneal osteophyte, and diseased tendon is the under…
