Beef-on-dairy and Holstein calves: Impacts of breed and pair composition on behavior and performance.

Beef-on-dairy calves are present in dairy farms worldwide; however, little is known about their behavior or if social housing with purebred … alves performed more abnormal oral behaviors (non-nutritive oral behaviors and cross-suckling), and feeding behaviors. In the food neophobia test, Holstein calves contacted less, took longer to contact, and consumed less novel food than beef-on-dairy calves. In contrast, in the novel object tests, Holstein calves were more likely to contact the object. Pair compos …

Potential mechanisms underlying the association between feeding and eating disorders and autism.

There is a reliable association between autism and Feeding and Eating Disorders. Concerningly, where these two conditions co-occur, clinical outcomes of Feeding and Eating Disorders are significantly worse, and treatment less effective, than when the Feeding and Eating Disorders occur in neurotypical individuals. Problematically, the reason for the association between autism and Feeding and Eating Disorders is poorly understood, which constrains advances in clinical care. This paper outlines several possible mechanisms that may underlie the observed association and suggests ways in which they

Timing of eating during transition impacts feedlot cattle diet and liveweight gain.

The timing of eating, relative to when feed is offered, is affected by the social rank of feedlot cattle due to limited feed bunk space. As cattle can select feed based on dietary preference, the timing of eating for cattle in feedlot may be associated with the ingested diet composition. Our objectives were to determine the nutritive value and timing of feed ingested by 100 feedlot cattle during transition and the association of timing of eating with feeding behaviours and average daily gain (ADG). Cattle behaviour and timing of eating were determined on 100 feedlot cattle using accelerometer-

Associations between childhood autistic traits and adolescent eating disorder behaviours are partially mediated by fussy eating.

OBJECTIVE: Previous literature shows an increased risk for eating disorders in autistic individuals. This study tested whether fussy eating contributes to the association between childhood autistic traits and adolescent eating disorder behaviours. METHOD: Using data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, we estimated the intercept and slope of parent-rated autistic traits and fussy eating between 7 and 14 years (N = 8982) and their association with self-reported eating disorder behaviours at age 14 years, including the indirect path from autistic traits to eating disorder b

Is orthorexia nervosa a feature of obsessive-compulsive disorder? A multicentric, controlled study.

PURPOSE: The term orthorexia nervosa (ON) was coined to describe altered thoughts and behaviours related to healthy eating. The prevalence of ON was found to scale up to almost 90% among high-risk populations (ballet dancers, athletes, and health workers). ON seem to share psychopathological aspects with both Eating Disorders (ED) and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). The aim of the study was to analyse the frequency and intensity of ON symptoms among subjects diagnosed with OCD, hypothesising that they would be higher than in two control groups (subjects with anxiety-depressive disorders a

Working for food is related to range use in free-range broiler chickens.

When animals prefer to make efforts to obtain food instead of acquiring it from freely available sources, they exhibit what is called contrafreeloading. Recently, individual differences in behavior, such as exploration, were shown to be linked to how prone an individual may be to contrafreeload. In this work, our main objective was to test whether and how individual differences in range use of free-range broiler chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) were related to the individual motivation to contrafreeload. We also verified whether other behavioral variations could relate to range use. To that

Distributed amylin receptor signaling and its influence on motivated behavior.

The intake- and body weight-suppressive hormone amylin exerts effects on energy balance control at a variety of nuclei within the brain, including sites that have been referred to in the literature as mediating homeostatic versus hedonic aspects of feeding. Here, we review key central nervous system sites of action for amylin signaling in the neural control of feeding and body weight, and discuss how these sites may interact to mediate the effects of amylin within the brain. Additionally, we review recent findings suggesting that amylin influences alcohol intake, suggesting broader effects of

Investigating the Developmental Trajectory of Long-term Oral Feeding Problems in 'Healthy' Preterm Infants.

PURPOSE: To investigate the occurrence of oral feeding problems in preterm infants up to one year after hospital discharge. METHODS: Thirty-six infants born <34 weeks gestation were enrolled in a prospective exploratory longitudinal pilot study prior to hospital discharge. Parents of eligible infants completed telephone questionnaires at 3, 6, and 12 months corrected gestational age. The occurrence and type of feeding problems; medical problems; and rehabilitation services received were collected. RESULTS: A total of 26 (72.2%) parents responded, with 11 (42%) identifying feeding problems th

PVN infusion of GLP-1-(7-36) amide suppresses feeding but does not induce aversion or alter locomotion in rats.

Intracerebroventricular infusion of glucagon-like peptide-1-(7-36) amide (GLP-1) reduces feeding in rats, an effect that could be localized to the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN). Intracerebroventricular GLP-1, however, may also induce conditioned taste aversion (CTA), thereby putting into question the specificity of the action of GLP-1 on feeding. The present experiments evaluated the action of PVN GLP-1 (0, 100, or 200 ng) on induction of CTA, on locomotion, and finally, on feeding and drinking in rats. PVN infusion of GLP-1 (100 or 200 ng) did not support the induction of CTA and

Evidence for feeding elicited through antihistaminergic effects of tricyclic antidepressants in the rat hypothalamus.

We studied central mechanisms of antidepressants that affect feeding behavior in rats. The tricyclic compounds amitriptyline, doxepin and imipramine significantly induced feeding after their infusion into the third cerebral ventricle in the light phase, but the tricyclic, desipramine, and the dicyclic zimelidine, did not. Drinking was not affected by any compound tested. The relative order of potency in eliciting feeding was: amitriptyline and doxepin greater than imipramine greater than desipramine and zimelidine. To clarify the involvement of neuronal histamine in antidepressant-induced feed…

Lateralized vagal oxytocin receptor signaling separately controls feeding and socioemotional functions via hypothalamic oxytocin neurons.

Oxytocin neurons in the paraventricular hypothalamus (PVHOxt) regulate feeding, anxiety, and social behaviors. Activation of Oxt receptor (Oxtr)-expressing vagal sensory neurons engages these PVHOxt neurons and improves hyperphagic obesity; however, their roles in anxiety and sociability remain unclear. Here, we activated vagal Oxtr-expressing neurons in male mice using a single intraperitoneal (IP) Oxt injection or chemogenetics. IP Oxt reduced anxiety-like behavior, enhanced social interaction, and suppressed feeding while activating both vagal sensory neurons and PVHOxt neurons. These effec

Opioid-dependent anticipatory negative contrast and binge-like eating in rats with limited access to highly preferred food.

Binge eating and an increased role for palatability in determining food intake are abnormal adaptations in feeding behavior linked to eating disorders and body weight dysregulation. The present study tested the hypothesis that rats with limited access to highly preferred food would develop analogous opioid-dependent learned adaptations in feeding behavior, with associated changes in metabolism and anxiety-like behavior. For this purpose, adolescent female Wistar rats were daily food deprived (2 h) and then offered 10-min access to a feeder containing chow followed sequentially by 10-min access…

lickcalc: Easy Analysis of Lick Microstructure in Experiments of Rodent Ingestive Behaviour.

Lick microstructure is a term used in behavioural neuroscience to describe the information that can be obtained from a detailed examination of rodent drinking behaviour. Rather than simply recording total intake (volume consumed), lick microstructure examines how licks are grouped and the spacing of these groups of licks. This type of analysis can provide important insights into why an animal is drinking, for example, whether it is influenced by taste or affected by the consequences of consumption (e.g., feeling 'full'). Here, we present a software package, lickcalc, that allows detailed micro

Secretory Cells in Halla parthenopeia (Oenonidae): Potential Implications for the Feeding and Defence Strategies of a Carnivorous Burrowing Polychaete.

Carnivorous polychaetes are known to bear diversified and often unique anatomical and behavioural adaptations for predation and defence. Halla parthenopeia, a species known to be a specialized predator of clams, thrives in the soft bottoms of the Mediterranean Sea, holding potential for polyculture and biotechnology due to the secretion of bioactive compounds. Our objective was to provide a comprehensive description of H. parthenopeia's anatomy and microanatomy, shedding light on the relation between morphology and habitat, chemical defences, and feeding behaviour. The pharynx, housing maxilla

The parasubthalamic nucleus: A novel eating center in the brain.

Eating behavior stands as a fundamental determinant of animal survival and growth, intricately regulated by an amalgamation of internal and … rocessing of satiation and aversive signals, thereby orchestrating the initiation or termination of feeding behaviors. This review delves into the distinctive neuronal subpopulations within the PSTN and their associated neural networks, aiming to refine our comprehension of the neural underpinnings of feeding while also seeking to unearth more efficacious therapeu …

Postpartum feeding attitudes, maternal depression, and breastfeeding in Barbados.

Maternal feeding attitudes, maternal moods and infant feeding practices during the first 6 months postpartum were assessed in 226 healthy, well-nourished Barbadian mother-infant dyads. Factor analysis of the feeding attitudes questionnaire resulted in six independent factors. The belief that breastfeeding was better than bottle-feeding was associated with higher family income, more information seeking behavior and older maternal age at the time of her first pregnancy. Women who believed that breastfeeding was better at 7 weeks postpartum were also more likely to breastfeed at concurrent and la

Evaluating the pathways linking complementary feeding practices to obesity in early life.

The complementary feeding period, when solids and liquids other than breast milk and formula are added to the infant diet, is an important development window shaping infant growth and weight gain, metabolic development, and lifelong eating practices. Yet, relatively little is known about how the timing and types of foods offered to infants at this stage may shape their growth and subsequent risk of developing obesity. This narrative review describes the existing literature on complementary feeding practices, discusses potential biological and behavioral pathways linking complementary feeding p

Short-term effects of regrouping on behavior of prepartum dairy cows.

The objectives were to determine the effect of regrouping during the dry period on feeding, social, rumination, and lying behavior for cows that were moved to a new pen and cows that remained in their home pen but had new cows introduced. Forty-eight prepartum Holstein dairy cows were housed in groups of 6 and regrouped in groups of 3 (16 triads) with 1 triad moving to another pen and 1 triad staying in the same pen; the triad was considered the experimental unit.
