A study was undertaken to show that the determination of glomerular filtration rate with radio-labelled sodium chromate ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid is a repeatable, easily performed and accurate examination in the critically ill patient. We have performed 24 cascade filtration treatments in 8 patients with hyperviscosity syndrome (2 cases), essential mixed cryoglobulinemia, post-hepatitic cryoglobulinemia, Sjogrens disease, rheumatoid vasculitis, Miller-Fisher syndrome and chronic dysimmune polyneuropathy. New cellulose diacetate filters were employed, giving a satisfactory performance. The UCLA monolayer procedure is used to produce a preparation of cervical epithelial cells for automated cytology. We investigated the nylon mesh filtration step of the procedure to determine if it altered the proportion of abnormal epithelial cells in the specimen. The effect of revascularization on decreased glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was studied in 18 patients with renovascular hypertension (RVH) for a period of 5 to 74 months after operation. Renal artery stenosis (SRA) was present unilaterally in 3 patients, bilaterally in 13 patients, and in two patients with one kidney. Following surgical correction, the GFR increased or normalized in 6 patients, decreased in 2, and did not change in 10 patients. Radioimmunoassay (RIA) for rubella-specific IgM antibodies was compared with haemagglutination-inhibition (HI) in conjunction with gel filtration for the diagnosis of rubella infection in pregnant women during a 1-year period. In total 476 women were investigated of whom 221 were tested for rubella IgM. Both techniques gave positive results with 64 sera, and RIA alone with one additional serum. Ethanol-precipitated substance (EP) was prepared from culture filtrate of Fonsecaea pedrosoi. EP was separated into two components by passing through a Sephadex G-50 column; the faster passing component was referred to as EP-1, the slower as EP-2. Microperfusion experiments were performed in rats to assess the effect of luminal application of theophylline and the more lipophilic 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX) on feedback regulation of glomerular filtration rate. Clinical experience with Sephadex gel filtration for evaluation of the bilirubin binding affinity of serum in neonatal jaundice is reported. In serum specimens from 362 jaundiced neonates the results of the test were in most cases in good agreement with the independently determined decision to perform exchange transfusion. In all relevant cases of the 24 with bilirubin encephalopathy the Sephadex test was strongly positive. Mycelial and yeast-phase culture filtrates prepared from three strains of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis exhibited equal reactivity in sensitized guinea pigs.
