Using a Nature-Based Mindfulness Intervention to Improve Mental Health in Nurse Anesthesia Students: A Pilot Study.

Resident registered nurse anesthetists (RRNAs) face high levels of depression, anxiety, and stress (DAS) due to the academic, clinical, and financial demands of graduate anesthesia education. Nature-based mindfulness, which integrates nature exposure with mindfulness practices, has shown promise in reducing psychological distress but remains underexplored among RRNAs. This single-arm pilot, pre-/posttest study evaluated the effectiveness of a nature-based mindfulness intervention (NBMI) on DAS in a cohort of third-year RRNAs in the southeastern United States. The 8-week intervention included g

Combining Evidence-Based Interventions to Support Mental Health in Neonatal Intensive Care Families.

Families of infants requiring admission and care within the NICU experience a multitude of overwhelming stressors and challenges related to the severity and duration of their infant's illness and their unique life circumstances. These stressful experiences, traumas, and challenges can have long-term physical, emotional, financial, and psychological consequences for both the infant admitted to the NICU and their family. Combining evidence-based research and practices, family-centered care, enhanced multidisciplinary collaboration and communication, and mental health education into a multifacete

The public, the primary physician, and genetic counselling.

This article reviews the literature regarding variables that affect that likelihood that genetic counselling will be either requested by clients or suggested by primary care practitioners. Results of current research indicate that use of genetic counselling may be hindered by a lack of knowledge on the part of both physicians and the public, by such psychological barriers as fear of genetic disease and its attendant stigma, by cultural values that stress reliance on fate or God's will, by medical values that deemphasize clients' emotional needs and disease prevention and that stress active int

The Oley Foundation and Consumer Support Groups.

Patients with intestinal failure (IF) often require home parenteral and/or enteral nutrition (HPEN). There are many complications associated with both IF and the use of HPEN, including infection and intolerance. Psychosocial effects, such as depression, isolation, fatigue, anxiety, financial stress, are also associated with IF and HPEN and can be difficult to address. Support groups offer patients and caregivers the opportunity to talk to and learn from others who have had similar experiences. The Oley Foundation, a nonprofit organization for HPEN consumers, caregivers, and clinicians, fulfill…

The hidden cost of caring: Psychological burden among caregivers of dogs with cognitive dysfunction, cancer, and age-related decline.

Canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD) is a neurodegenerative disorder like Alzheimer's disease in humans, but its impact on caregivers is poorly understood. This study examines the multidimensional burden of caregivers of ageing dogs, comparing caregivers of healthy ageing dogs (HAD), dogs with chronic oncological disease (COD) and dogs with CCD. In a cross-sectional survey of 516 Slovenian dog owners, seven areas of stress were investigated: time burden, work- life interference, emotional burden, social stigmatization, financial burden, perceived adequacy of care and veterinary support. Time bur

Prospective association between receipt of the economic impact payment and mental health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act of 2020 provided 'economic impact payments' (EIPs) of $1200 to US adults with annual personal income of $75 000 or less. This study examined the prospective association between EIP receipt and mental health outcomes. METHODS: A nationally representative sample of 3169 middle-income and low-income US adults completed a baseline assessment of their health and well-being in May-June 2020 and a 3-month follow-up assessment during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic when EIPs were distributed. RESULTS: Controlling for sociodemogra

Facts and frictions: conflicts of interest in medical research.

I'm going to give you a bird's eye view, as an editor-in-chief, of why conflict of interest in medical research is such a vital problem today in medicine. By the time I am finished, I hope that I will convince you that we physicians and medical scientists need to make sure we take control of our profession to protect our patients in a way that only we can do. The first definition of "conflict of interest" that I could find goes back to 1850 in Webster's Dictionary: "To conflict between the private interests and the official responsibility of a person in a position of trust." That sounds famili

Liquid Biopsy for Cancer Screening in Li-Fraumeni Syndrome: Interest in Clinical Trial and Reported Barriers to Standard-of-Care Screening.

UNLABELLED: Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) is a cancer predisposition syndrome associated with significant lifelong risk of cancer, and individuals with LFS undergo recommended screening protocols that are heavily dependent upon radiologic imaging. Recently, liquid biopsy has emerged as a potential new screening technique for LFS. In this study, we conducted a survey of adults with LFS and caregivers of children with LFS to determine interest in a clinical trial evaluating liquid biopsy as an addition to standard-of-care cancer screening. We also assessed barriers to receiving recommended screenin

Giving Resources to lOw-income Children to Enhance RecoverY (GROCERY): Protocol for a randomized control trial.

BACKGROUND: Social and structural factors drive health disparities in children. Hospitalization of a child is stressful for families, especially for low-income families who may experience exacerbation of food insecurity and other financial hardships. There is a need to evaluate interventions to support low-income families after hospitalization to improve child health and family well-being and ultimately to reduce health disparities. OBJECTIVES: In this randomized control trial (RCT), we will compare the effectiveness of a post-discharge financial support intervention with standard resources o

Physiological Responses and Training Satisfaction During National Rollout of a Neurosurgical Intraoperative Catastrophe Simulator for Resident Training.

BACKGROUND: Systematic use of neurosurgical training simulators across institutions is significantly hindered by logistical and financial constraints. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate feasibility of large-scale implementation of an intraoperative catastrophe simulation, we introduced a highly portable and low-cost immersive neurosurgical simulator into a nationwide curriculum for neurosurgery residents, during years 2016 to 2019. The impact of cultural stress on family functioning among Puerto Rican displaced families and the effect on mental health.

Hurricane María caused significant devastation on the island of Puerto Rico, impacting thousands of lives. Puerto Rican crisis migrant families faced stress related to displacement and relocation (cultural stress), often exhibited mental health symptoms, and experienced distress at the family level. Although cultural stress has been examined as an individual experience, little work has focused on the experience as a family. To address this gap, we conducted a mixed-methods study designed to examine the predictive effects of cultural stress on family conflict and its mental health implications

Impact of Physiological and Psychological Stress on Glaucoma Development and Progression: A Narrative Review.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Presently, elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is the only approved modifiable risk factor. A consensus of the current literature suggests that both physiological and psychological stress may also impact the lifelong course of glaucoma. Specifically, stress is known to influence sympathetic nervous system activity. An increase in sympathetic nervous system activity may elevate a person's blood pressure (BP) and IOP, and both are strongly associated with glaucomatous disease. Anxiety and depression have more conflicting evidence i
