INTRODUCTION: A photon-deficient ('cold') vertebra on fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (F-FDG) PET is a known entity and can arise as a result of varying etiologies. A proper interpretation of this observation is required to make an accurate diagnosis for appropriate management.
METHODS: Twelve cases with 'cold' vertebrae on F-FDG PET/computed tomography (CT) were selected and analyzed from a population of 600 patients with a known malignancy who had undergone whole-body F-FDG PET/CT for staging, disease viability assessment, response to treatment, or suspected recurrence purposes. The patterns

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) is the sixth most common type of soft tissue sarcoma. Most MPNSTs arise in association with a peripheral nerve or preexisting neurofibroma. Neurofibromatosis type is the most important risk factor for MPNST. Tumor size and fludeoxyglucose F 18 avidity are among the most helpful parameters to distinguish MPNST from a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor. The histopathologic diagnosis is predominantly a diagnosis of light microscopy. Immunohistochemical stains are most helpful to distinguish high-grade MPNST from its histologic mimics. Current surg

Whole-body fluorine 18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron-emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) is performed primarily for oncologic indications; however, FDG uptake is not specific for malignancy. Herein we focus on causes of increased FDG uptake in and around joints, as lesions in these locations are commonly benign. A combination of primary intra-articular processes and osseous processes that may occur near the joint space will be discussed. Causes of intra-articular and periarticular increased FDG activity can be broadly divided into infectious, inflammatory, degenerative, and

Granulosa cell tumor (GCT) of the ovary is a rare tumor accounting for 2%-5% of ovarian malignancies. Although the usefulness of 18F-FDG PET/CT is well demonstrated in the staging and follow-up of the great majority of ovarian cancers, GCTs are known to cause false-negative results on FDG PET because of very low FDG avidity. We present a case of a GCT in which an 18F-FDG PET/CT proved very useful in the detection of recurrence.

PET (positron emission tomography) using FDG (¹⁸F-fluorodeoxyglucose) has been widely used in the evaluation of various malignancies, but its clinical application to leukemia remains limited. We report a case of leukemia in which diffuse bone marrow uptake of FDG was observed, and bone marrow aspiration subsequently revealed acute lymphoblastic leukemia. It is not easy to differentiate between physiological and pathologic uptake when diffuse homogeneous uptake in bone marrow is observed.

A 75-year-old man with prostate adenocarcinoma had a baseline FDG PET/CT that demonstrated increased left parotid and absent right parotid activity. The CT revealed fat in the right parotid space and enlargement of the left parotid gland. There was no history of dry mouth. Agenesis of one or more of the salivary glands is extremely rare with only few reported cases. Awareness of anatomic variations is helpful for reviewing PET without CT or pertechnetate, sestimibi, and gallium examinations where salivary gland activity may typically be interpreted without coregistered CT.

In quantitative measurements of small animal PET studies, blood sampling is limited due to the small amounts of blood such animals can provide. In addition, injection doses are quite limited. In this situation, a high-sensitivity well counter would be useful for reducing the amount of the blood sample needed from small animals. Bismuth germinate (BGO) has a high stopping power for high-energy gamma rays compared to NaI(Tl), which is commonly used for conventional well counters. We have developed a BGO well counter and have tested it for blood-sampling measurements in small animals. The BGO wel

It is well known that, haematogenous colon cancer metastases are most commonly found in the liver, less likely in the lungs through the paravertebral venous system and rarely in other organs. Sporadic clinical cases of colon cancer metastases to the abdominal wall, the thyroid or the adrenal glands have been reported. Here, we present an uncommon case of chest wall metastasis from colon cancer demonstrated with 2-fluoro [fluorine-18]-2-deoxy-D-glucose ((18)F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT). A 52 years old female patient was examined after she felt a swelling mass

Patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) are at an increased risk for biliary tract carcinoma. The preoperative diagnosis of a biliary tract tumor as a malignancy is difficult, even using new modalities such as multidetector computed tomography (MD-CT), magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP), endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERC), and (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET). Surgery is considered to be first line of treatment when these examinations suggest the presence of malignancy in the biliary tract, depending on both the curability of t

PURPOSE: In lymphoma, [(18)F]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) is routinely used for initial staging, early evaluation of treatment response, and identification of disease relapse. However, there are no prospective studies investigating the value of serial FDG-PET over time in patients in complete remission.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients with lymphoma who achieved the first complete remission were prospectively enrolled onto the study and scheduled for serial FDG-PET scans at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months; further scans were then carried out on an annual basis. Overall

Localizing positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) findings in heavily scarred surgical fields can be challenging. A high energy gamma probe (PET probe) can be used to guide surgery in those difficult areas. We describe our experience localizing and removing fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) avid lesions in different body areas. Between 2004 and 2007, we used the PET probe to localize and remove 12 lesions from 9 patients. The lesions were removed confirming ex vivo and tumor bed FDG activity. Five patients had lesions in previously operated and sometimes radiated fields. One patien

A 48-year-old male smoker presented with a chief complaint of persistent cough for three months. A CT scan revealed only a large right paratracheal mass. The plan was to obtain histological confirmation of suspected lung cancer via bronchoscopy and mediastinoscopy. A whole body 18F-FDG (2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-D-glucose) PET Scan was ordered for staging and localization of the most accessible biopsy site. There was a large, intense hypermetabolic focus corresponding to the paratracheal lesion seen on CT, as well as a lesion in the right adrenal gland. There was also a superficial, subcutaneous h

PURPOSE: Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) is a promising imaging technique that has already proven effective in modifying patient care in oncology. Fluorodeoxyglucose still remains the main radiopharmaceutical agent routinely used for PET imaging. A growing interest has recently lead to broaden PET research on benign disorders. The field of inflammatory or immune diseases and globally the field of internal medicine could also be impacted by FDG-PET.
MAIN POINTS: Great vessels vasculitides and fever of unknown origin have both been studied by several teams and could be

A 75-year-old woman presented with an 8-month history of progressive abdominal distension and associated weight loss. Computed tomography (CT) showed a very large, partially enhancing, cystic/solid mass within the abdomen that extended from below the left diaphragm to the pelvis. A large (10 cm), partially enhancing lesion was also seen in segments 6 and 7 of the right lobe of the liver, consistent with metastatic disease. The patient underwent laparotomy and resection of a 5.7-kg abdominal tumor measuring 30 x 27 x 20 cm. Histology confirmed a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) of stomach

We report a 48-year-old woman with lymph node (LN) metastases from breast cancer in whom diagnosis was difficult by conventional imaging methods but easy by F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET. She was given a diagnosis of right breast cancer and then underwent modified radical mastectomy in December 1997. During routine CT and US studies in September 1998, a questionable LN measuring 1 cm in diameter was detected in the right supraclavicular region, but a definitive diagnosis of this LN was difficult by these tests. The patient underwent FDG PET test, which showed strong nodular activity (SUV=
