Food intake, growth rate, food conversion and food choice in broilers fed on diets high in rapeseed meal and pea meal, with observations on sensory evaluation of the resulting poultry meat.

1. Experiments were done to measure the effects of 100 and 200 g/kg of either pea meal or low glucosinolate, low erucic acid rapeseed meal on food intake and growth, food choice and meat organoleptic quality in broiler chickens. 2. The test diets were formulated to be iso-energetic and iso-nitrogenous with a soy-wheat control diet. In all diets, lysine was fixed at 11.0 g/kg and all other indispensable amino acids were present in excess of requirements. 3. Food intake was little affected by the inclusion of 100 g/kg of pea meal in the diet but 200 g/kg of peas caused a decrease. Rapeseed produ

Enteral nutrition for maintenance of remission in Crohn's disease.

BACKGROUND: Prevention of relapse is a major issue in the management of quiescent Crohn's disease (CD). Current therapies (e.g. methotrexate, biologics, 6-mercaptopurine and azathioprine) may be effective for maintaining remission in CD, but these drugs may cause significant adverse events. Interventions that are effective and safe for maintenance of remission in CD are desirable. OBJECTIVES: The primary objectives were to evaluate the efficacy and safety of enteral nutrition for the maintenance of remission in CD and to assess the impact of formula composition on effectiveness. Clinical application of ghrelin for chronic respiratory diseases.

The discovery of ghrelin has resulted in the development of potential therapeutics for cachexia caused by multiple underlying diseases. When chronic respiratory diseases progress to their advanced stages, cachexia often occurs, thereby worsening the patient's prognosis. A small clinical trial that enrolled cachectic patients with chronic respiratory disease revealed that administration of ghrelin improved their nutritional status and exercise tolerance. Short-term administration of ghrelin was found to be safe and tolerated with adverse events, including suffusion, sleepiness, peristalsis, hun

Improved outcomes with a standardized feeding protocol for very low birth weight infants.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of a standardized enteral feeding protocol for very low birth weight (VLBW) infants on nutritional, clinical and growth outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of VLBW cohorts 9 months before and after initiation of a standardized feeding protocol consisting of 6-8 days of trophic feedings, followed by an increase of 20 ml/kg/day. The primary outcome was days to reach full enteral feeds defined as 160 ml/kg/day. Secondary outcomes included rates of necrotizing enterocolitis and culture-proven sepsis, days of parenteral n

[Sipping as a mode of correction of protein-calorie deficiency in intensive care unit patients].

The paper presents the results of postoperative studies in 82 patients with major soft tissue phlegmons of the extremities and torso. The basic aspect of the studies concerned the correction of protein-calorie deficiency on the basis of additional nutrition through sipping of hypercaloric formula "Nutridrink" and the standard enteral formula "Nutrisone dry powder", which were given to in 29 and 20 patients, respectively, on postoperative day 1 for 3 weeks. A control group comprised 33 patients who received only diet 1. The findings have indicated that sipping of the enteral formula substantial

High serum phytosterol levels in short bowel patients on parenteral nutrition support.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Patients with short bowel syndrome (SBS) are often depending on parenteral nutrition support (PNS), sometimes complicated by liver dysfunction. Phytosterols in parenteral lipid emulsions have been suspected to be responsible for cholestasis in paediatric nutrition support. The aim of the present study was to evaluate phytosterol intake and serum phytosterol levels in adult SBS patients. METHODS: We quantified serum levels of phytosterols, cholesterol, and markers for bile acid and cholesterol synthesis, by gas or liquid chromatography in 21 healthy controls, and in 24 adult

Non-steady-state modeling of effects of timing and level of concentrate supplementation on ruminal pH and forage intake in high-producing, grazing ewes.

A computer model was developed to predict responses of lactating ewes to concentrate supplementation, whether on pasture or stall-fed, given concentrate once per day or in multiple feedings, and suckling multiple lambs. The model considers effects of concentrate supplementation on organic acid production, saliva flow, ruminal pH, and forage intake. The user defines ewe BW, feed composition, and concentrate feeding times and amounts. The reference ewe has free access to forage and water. Upon consumption, forages and concentrates enter into lag pools for 2.0 and 0.24 h, respectively. Carbohydra

Clinical study on the ratio of glucose/fat in peripheral parenteral nutrition and the usage of a midline catheter.

Two important unsolved questions related to peripheral parenteral nutrition are the ratio of components in the intravenous (IV) solution and catheter-related complications. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the nutritional profiles of three kinds of IV solutions with different ratios of components, while maintaining the total energy at about 1 200 kcal/day and the amino acid level at 60 g. The IV solution formulas used were as follows : glucose/fat = 2:1, osmolarity ratio = 3.3 for group A, glucose/fat = 1:1, osmolarity ratio = 3.1 for group B, and glucose/fat = 1:2, osmolarity rati

Complications of pancreatic surgery and the role of perioperative nutrition.

INTRODUCTION: There are limited data characterizing the burden of HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Malawi. Epidemiologic research and access to HIV prevention, treatment and care services have been traditionally limited in Malawi by criminalization and stigmatization of same-sex practices. To inform the development of a comprehensive HIV prevention intervention for Malawian MSM, we conducted a community-led assessment of HIV prevalence and correlates of infection. METHODS: From April 2011 to March 2012, 338 MSM were enrolled in a cross-sectional study in Blantyre, Malawi. Particip

Dietary supplementation and immunocompetence in housebound elderly subjects.

Immune function, particularly cell-mediated immunity (CMI), declines with age and it has been suggested that this may be secondary to the impaired nutritional status often found in the elderly. In the present study a balanced nutritional supplement consisting of several macro- and micro-nutrients was administered daily to 27 housebound elderly (aged 70-85 years) for 12 weeks. Thirty-one matched subjects served as a control group. Delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity (DCH) to seven recall antigens was measured using the Mérieux Multitest CMI device and total numbers of lymphocytes, B-cells, T-cel

Nutrition and acute schistosomiasis.

In northeast Brazil, nutritional deficiency diseases and schistosomiasis mansoni overlap. An experimental model, which reproduces the marasmatic clinical form of protein-energy malnutrition, was developed in this laboratory to study these interactions. Albino Swiss mice were fed with a food association ingested usually by human populations in northeast Brazil. This diet (Regional Basic Diet - RBD) has negative effects on the growth, food intake and protein utilization in infected mice (acute phase of murine schistosomiasis). Nitrogen balance studies have also shown that infection with Schistos

Comparison of an elemental and polymeric enteral diet in patients with normal gastrointestinal function.

In a prospective controlled clinical trial, 70 patients with normal gastrointestinal function were randomised to receive either an elemental diet based on Vivonex HN or an isonitrogenous isocalorie polymeric diet based on Clinifeed 400, administered by continuous 24 hour nasogastric infusion. The two groups of patients were well matched for age, sex, diagnosis, prior starvation, duration of feeding, initial nutritional status, and metabolic status. Nitrogen losses were significantly less on the polymeric feed, despite similar intakes. Serum transferrin rose significantly (1.85 +/- 0.2 to 2.30

Predicting food taste with bound-driven optimization.

The prediction of sensory attributes from ingredient-level formulations is an emerging challenge at the intersection of food science and artificial intelligence. We address the fundamental question of whether the taste of a food can be predicted from its ingredients by treating recipes as composite materials. We apply Hashin-Shtrikman (HS) and Reuss-Voigt (RV) bounds, techniques originally developed for elastic moduli, as a null-hypothesis additive baseline for five taste dimensions (sweetness, sourness, bitterness, umami, saltiness) on a curated dataset of 70 recipes decomposed into 115 disti

Evaluating microbiome-directed fibre snacks in gnotobiotic mice and humans.

Changing food preferences brought about by westernization that have deleterious health effects1,2-combined with myriad forces that are contributing to increased food insecurity-are catalysing efforts to identify more nutritious and affordable foods3. Consumption of dietary fibre can help to prevent cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity4-6. A substantial number of reports have explored the effects of dietary fibre on the gut microbial community7-9. However, the microbiome is complex, dynamic and exhibits considerable intra- and interpersonal variation in its composition and functi

Development and Characterization of Clean-Label Hybrid Deli Ham with Pulse Flours as Partial Meat Replacers.

Growing interest in sustainable and clean-label foods has increased the need for meat products with reduced animal meat content. This study comparatively characterized three deli ham formulations: a conventional control, a hybrid formulation in which 50% of the pork meat mass was replaced with chickpea flour, red lentil flour and potato protein isolate, and a clean-label hybrid formulation with the same meat replacement. For physicochemical, nutritional, texture and rheological analyses, one production batch was prepared for each formulation. A second, independently produced batch of each form
