A clinical review was performed of 11 cases of traumatic foot treated by tendon transfer. Among 11 patients, there were eight males and three females, ranging from four to 36 years of age. The anterior tibial tendon was used in six cases for tendon transfer and among these, split anterior tibial tendon was used in three cases in children. The posterior tibial tenodn was used in two cases and the extensor digitorum longus tendon of the foot was in three cases. In this case presentation, the diagnosis was based solely on the histopathologic examination of tissue taken at the time of the first surgery. Subsequent cultures did not reveal any growth of organisms that would cause Madura foot. The patient must be monitored periodically, for it is rare that such an infection is cured with surgery other than amputation.

The talo-navicular joint takes a part in both talocalcaneal and midtarsal joints's motion. Its arthrodesis produces all but suppression of subtalar joint motion. If there is surgical indication for deformed but flexible foot, better than a standard resectional subtalar arthrodesis, talo-navicular arthrodesis, with easy technique, is successful to maintain correction in right position, specially for valgus flat foot.

For decades, all over the world, foot surgery was covered summarily at the tail-end of orthopedic surgical teaching syllabuses. Inevitably, the number of operations with unsatisfactory results was large. On the basis of selected cases, the author points out changes and innovations in indications and techniques which have come about as a result of super-specialization. Our thoughts and actions have also--and not least--been influenced by ideas which originated in southern Europe and the USA.

This article presents the most common structural foot deformities encountered in clinical practice. The deformities are defined, and the expected compensations at the subtalar joint (STJ) are described. The theoretical consequences of the STJ compensations on proximal and distal tissues are presented. A biomechanical rationale for certain tissue disorders is described. The possible effects of abnormal STJ compensation on osseous development are briefly discussed.

A survey has been carried out to establish information on foot loading in amputee stance. The parameters measured are percentage body weight and the positions of the centres of pressure under each foot. The data was collected in a clinical environment by the use of a Double Video Forceplate (DVF), a tool developed at the Bioengineering Centre. Mycetoma or Madura foot is a chronic infection of the foot characterized by swelling and multiple sinuses. The sinuses discharge pus composed of colored granules which contain the infecting organism. Although this entity is still rare in the United States, an increasing immigrant population and rapid air transportation have resulted in a greater number of cases being reported. Two characteristic cases encountered in young adults led the authors to present the hand foot and mouth syndrome. They report the characteristic distribution and vesicular appearance of the lesions. The course was benign. The viral origin of the disease was more or less easily confirmed by cell culture, inoculation in new born mice and demonstration of antibodies. Usually the virus was a Coxackie A 16. However in one of the authors cases, an Echo 11 was demonstrated. The apparent rareness of the disease may be explained by lack of recognition.
