BACKGROUND: Assessment of the foot is an essential part of the newborn examination. Foot abnormalities range from an isolated deformity due to intrauterine positioning to a functional impairment due to a structural malformation. The purpose of this article is to review assessment, abnormal findings, and current treatment options of common foot deformities.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A review of literature was conducted using keywords in PubMed, Google Scholar, and CINAHL databases from 2018 to 2023.
RESULTS: Although assessment techniques for the neonatal foot remain the same, recent nonsurgical …

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate and classify the types and incidences of foot deformities in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Methods: A cross-sectional study with convenience sample was obtained of 220 patients with foot pain and RA classification criteria (approved by the American College of Rheumatology and the European League against Rheumatism in 2010). A series of outcomes were assessed to measure the morphological characteristics of the feet. The Foot Posture Index (FPI), the Manchester Scale of Hallux Valgus and the Nijmegen classification of forefoot disorders…

UNLABELLED: The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between the intensity of unrestrained weight bearing after a non-fr … ambulation (kg x week) as a surrogate. Feet were classified in 3 groups according to the degree of foot deformities found at the start of treatment with TCC: Feet without deformities (group A, n=16), feet with minor deformities (partially reduced plantar arch (group B, n=6) and feet with major deformities (collapsed plantar arch, group C, n=12)
RESULTS: Feet in …

The key to successful management of the cavovarus foot is identifying the pathoanatomy and dysfunction that are driving the deformity and producing the symptoms. There is no substitute for a thorough clinical evaluation of the foot, evaluating the static alignment and dynamic function. Plain films alone are not sufficient to determine the diagnosis, but they are necessary for procedure selection and correction planning. This is especially true for assessing the degree of hindfoot varus. Some issues are difficult to diagnose, and imaging plays an important role.

UNLABELLED: Originally described as a means to address fixed deformities or uncontrolled movement of the hindfoot observed in paralytic foot deformities, triple arthrodesis has evolved into a powerful procedure for the correction of a variety of foot deformities. Over the past decade, multiple advances have been made with respect to diagnostic imaging, fixation options, bone graft substitutes, and postoperative regimens. While this operation requires experience and skill to execute, when properly performed, it allows for correction of deformity and a plantigrade and ideally pain-free foot for …

Genetic disorders manifest clinically in a variety of phenotypes. A patient with cataract, hypoacusis, hand and foot deformities, and diabetes was not reported. The patient is a 74-year-old male with a history of congenital foot and hand deformities manifesting as brachydactyly of fingers 4 and 5 on the right side and brachydactyly and syndactyly of the fingers 1-5 on the left side. Foot deformities required orthopedic surgery from an early age. He later developed cataract that required surgery, hypoacusis with tinnitus on the left side, and diabetes. Cerebral MRI revealed generalized atrophy.…

BACKGROUND: Lipomeningocele is the most common cause of occult spinal dysraphism and spinal cord tethering. Children with this condition see … 15 years of age at the time of the final follow-up.
RESULTS: Most patients had cutaneous stigmata. Foot deformities were the most common orthopaedic problems, followed by scoliosis. In patients over 15 years of age, the incidence of foot deformities was 44.2% (36 feet), with 20 feet requiring surgical treatment. The most common foot deformities were cavovarus, ca …

Concomitant valgus deformities of the ankle joint are found in approximately 3% of patients with symptomatic flat foot deformities. Conservative treatment is mostly successful only in the short term or in low-demand patients. The operative treatment of flat foot deformities follows the standard algorithm for flat foot treatment. The ankle joint can be treated while retaining mobility or by arthrodesis depending on the degree and rigidity of the deformity, degenerative changes, patient factors and expectations. Achieving an orthograde hindfoot and midfoot is obligatory for successful treatment …

Clinicians are increasingly aware that mechanical aspects of foot deformities, such as Charcot changes, clawtoes, bunion deformities, or cavus or planus foot deformities, might have an impact on the occurrence, potential healing, and recurrence of foot ulcers. We report the prevalence of plain radiographic changes and attempt to rate the severity of those deformities in the feet of 456 diabetic veteran medicine clinic enrollees. All 456 radiographs were reviewed by orthopaedic surgeons to specifically identify Charcot changes, presence of arterial calcification, dislocation of the lesser toe m…

Foot deformity is present in almost all patients paralyzed by myelomeningocele. This article outlines the pertinent pathoanatomy resulting in differing foot deformities and their effects on normal gait. Treatment of these deformities is discussed, and the most common deformities present for the different levels of paralysis are outlined. Emphasis is placed on surgical and orthotic treatments, which result in functional improvements for the pediatric patient with spina bifida.
