Necessity of acceptable radiologic alignment by preoperative closed reduction for unstable distal radius fractures treated with volar locking plates.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the necessity of achieving acceptable radiographic alignment by preoperative closed reduction in unstable distal radius fractures (DRFs) to improve preoperative pain and obtain satisfactory outcomes after surgery. METHODS: From 2013 to 2016, patients who received volar locking plates for DRFs were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were classified into acceptable and non-acceptable reduction groups based on immediate post-reduction radiographs. To avoid potential bias, a matched-pair analysis was performed, and paired patients were categor

Optimum timing of conversion from DCO to definitive fixation in closed fractures of the lower limb: When and how?

INTRODUCTION: In damage control orthopaedics (DCO), fractures are initially stabilised with external fixation followed by delayed conversion to definitive internal fixation. The aim of this study is to determine whether the timing of the conversion influences the development of deep infection and fracture healing in a cohort of patients treated by DCO after a closed fracture of the lower limb. Furthermore, we wanted to evaluate whether the one-stage conversion procedure is always safe. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at a single level 1 trauma centre. The relationship between initial closed reduction and the surgical reconstruction of the radiocarpal joint line in distal radial fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Whilst initial closed reduction followed by definitive open fixation is widely applied in the treatment of distal radial fractures, the effect of the closed reduction on the reconstruction of the articular surface remains unclear. Our research questions were: METHODS: Palmar tilt and radiocarpal inclination of 425 patients were measured at admission, following initial closed reduction and after surgical reconstruction. RESULTS: Closed reduction increased palmar tilt by 12.1° and radial inclination by 2.7°. Open surgical reduction further corrected palmar tilt by 17.88° and radi

Transcutaneous transfrontal approach through a small peri-eyebrow incision for the reduction of closed anterior table frontal sinus fractures.

Transcutaneous or endoscopic approaches are commonly used to reduce closed anterior table frontal sinus fractures. However, transcutaneous approaches cause serious skin sequelae, and endoscopic approaches have a steep learning curve. To resolve these problems, between 2001 and 2008, a transcutaneous transfrontal approach through a small peri-eyebrow skin incision was used in 17 male patients. Postoperative computed tomography scans showed adequate reduction of displaced bone fragments in all cases. No complications related to this procedure, such as uncontrollable sinus bleeding, infection and

[The value of closed reduction of fractures of the lower thoracic and lumbar spine and computerized tomography follow-up].

The objectives of this prospective study were to investigate the value of the immediate closed reduction following fractures of the thoracolumbar and lumbar region. To reach that goal we performed a two stage CAT scan procedure before and after the reduction maneuver in a distinct patient population. The aim was not only to investigate the biomechanical process but also to evaluate and describe certain fracture types which have a good prognosis due to closed reduction according to posttraumatic spinal stenosis because of protruding posterior wall fragments and those who fail, respectively.

Documented Fracture-Healing Outcomes After Operative and Nonoperative Management of Closed Mid-Diaphyseal Humerus Fractures in Active-Duty Service Members.

INTRODUCTION: Closed diaphyseal humerus fracture treatment is nuanced with regard to the selection of surgical candidates. Fracture union is crucial, with historical data suggesting rivaling union rates between operative and nonoperative treatment; however, recent literature suggests increased union rates with operative treatment. Although nonoperative treatment of most fracture patterns is supported by the literature, there remains an argument for operative treatment for select patient populations, especially when considering union rates. Evidence regarding fracture-healing outcomes in young

Evolution of Overburden Fractures and the Water-Conducting Fracture Zone in Closely Spaced Coal Mine Seams under Highly Water-Rich Aquifers.

Risks of water-related mine incidents are related to water source, pathways, and water inrush intensity. This study aims to clarify the evolution of overburden fractures under repeated mining in closely spaced coal seams and to identify the presence of a connection between the damaged overburden and the overlying highly water-rich aquifer. Longfeng Coal Mine in northern Guizhou was taken as a case study. A coupled UDEC-DIC methodology was applied to identify fracture evolution and the development of water-conducting fracture zones during the downward mining of closely spaced coal seams. This a

Management and Outcome of Kirschner Wire-related Osteomyelitis in Pediatric Patients After Treatment of Closed Fracture.

BACKGROUND: Kirschner wires are commonly used for percutaneous fixation of closed fractures in children. This arouses the concern of pin site infection. However, only a small part of pin site infections would progress into osteomyelitis. This article specifically analyzes the clinical manifestations, imaging, surgery, and complications of osteomyelitis associated with Kirschner wire fixation for closed fractures in children. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on children with acute or chronic osteomyelitis who were admitted to our institution between 2012 and 2024. Their initial tre
