Viral Assemblages of a Hypersaline Estuary Show Divergent Responses to Freshwater and Temperature Disturbances.

Hypersaline environments harbor extremely dense bacterial and viral populations unique from other aquatic ecosystems. Changes to the hydrologic cycle and anthropogenic disturbances have the potential to alter these poorly described communities. Here, we aimed to assess the variation within the viral and bacterial communities of one of the world's largest hypersaline estuaries over 13 months. Using metagenomics, we identified viruses associated with two different salinity regimes, and we showed how viruses responded to pulse disturbances including freshwater inundation and freeze events. We ide

Availability and representativeness of freshwater macroinvertebrate data to enable Europe-wide assessment of biodiversity trends.

Freshwater ecosystems, though covering less than 1% of Earth's surface, harbor around 10% of all species. Pressures like pollution, water extraction, and habitat loss can exhibit complex interactions in their effects on freshwater biodiversity. Understanding the effects of these pressures on ecosystem services and functions of freshwater systems is crucial for effective environmental policies, and asks for availability of species data. We therefore compiled European monitoring data on macroinvertebrates from European, national, and regional biomonitoring and analysed their representativeness w

Introduced Fish in Mountains: State of Published Research on their Removal from Lentic Ecosystems.

The introduction of alien fish in freshwater ecosystems has become an increasing concern over the last decades and a considerable amount of literature exists on their ecological consequences. However, less is known about their management and eradication, particularly in mountain ecosystems, where fish introductions have been carried out over decades. Here, we systematically mapped and reviewed peer-reviewed literature on fish removal in mountain ecosystems, with a focus on standing waters. The results of our work indicate important spatial and taxonomic biases, with most published studies perf

Effects of a large run-of-river dam closure on the functional diversity of subtropical freshwater fish assemblages.

Run-of-river hydropower plants are increasingly promoted as a low-impact alternative for energy generation because of their reduced water storage capacity. However, their effects on fish functional structure remain poorly understood. We evaluated changes in fish functional diversity following dam closure at the Foz do Chapecó run-of-river hydropower plant. We quantified 23 functional traits and calculated four indices: functional richness (FRic), functional evenness (FEve), functional divergence (FDiv), and functional dispersion (FDis). These indices were weighted by fish abundance and biomass

Environmental drivers of heterotrophic euglenoid diversity in Czech bogs.

We investigated whether the diversity and community composition of morphologically recognizable heterotrophic euglenoids are associated with major environmental gradients in Czech bog habitats. Bogs and other Sphagnum-dominated wetlands are biodiversity hotspots for microbial eukaryotes, yet the ecological structuring of heterotrophic euglenoids in these systems remains poorly understood. We examined 419 samples from 110 sites from mire sites using live light microscopy, and species occurrences were related to habitat characteristics and water chemistry using correlation analyses, canonical co

Scale-dependent biases in systematic land cover maps undermine freshwater ecological assessment.

Land cover is a key determinant of landscape structure and ecological processes across spatial and temporal scales. In freshwater ecosystems, where riparian and catchment land cover regulate hydrology, nutrient inputs, and habitat quality, most ecological assessments rely on systematically produced land cover maps whose reliability varies with scale and context. Despite their widespread use, the extent to which these products accurately represent landscape patterns and long-term dynamics at ecologically relevant scales remains poorly understood. Here, we evaluate the reliability of systematic

Ion Clusters Reveal the Sources, Impacts, and Drivers of Freshwater Salinization.

Population growth, land use change, climate change, and natural resource extraction are driving the salinization of freshwater resources worldwide. Reversing these trends will require data-centric approaches that identify salt sources, environmental drivers, and ecosystem responses. In this study, we applied principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering to identify ion covariance patterns, or "ion clusters," in Broad Run, an urban stream in the Mid-Atlantic United States. These clusters correspond to distinct hydrologic regimes and reveal specific salinization risks: (1) phosphorus

Predicting Naegleria fowleri freshwater habitat suitability in the United States for the present-day and future using ecological niche modeling.

Habitat suitability for the freshwater pathogen Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the brain-eating amoebae, was assessed through ecological niche modeling. Using the machine learning algorithm Maxent and occurrence data from three datasets, present-day habitat suitability maps for the contiguous United States (US) were created, and the averaged models were used to project future habitat suitability for N. fowleri in 2021-2040 and 2041-2060 across three shared socioeconomic pathways (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP5-8.5). The highest percent contributor for averaged present-day models was land cover

Hematological and genotoxic biomarkers in a natural population of freshwater turtles Trachemys dorbigni (Duméril & Bibron, 1835) (Testudines: Emydidae) living in an urban area in Southern Brazil.

The present study aimed to report the morphometric and hematological indices and genotoxicity of a free-life population of D'Orbigny's slider turtles (Trachemys dorbigni) living in an urban area in Southern Brazil. For that, 16 specimens were randomly captured in an urban canal that receives irregular releases of wastewater. Biometrics and external visual changes were analyzed, such as turtle shell deformities, and the presence of parasites. Blood samples were collected to evaluate the hematological profile and the presence of micronuclei and other erythrocyte nuclear abnormalities as potentia

Transcriptional profiling of Bulinus globosus provides insights into immune gene families in snails supporting the transmission of urogenital schistosomiasis.

Schistosomiasis, urogenital and intestinal, afflicts 251 million people worldwide with approximately two-thirds of the patients suffering from the urogenital form of the disease. Freshwater snails of the genus Bulinus (Gastropoda: Planorbidae) serve as obligate intermediate hosts for Schistosoma haematobium, the etiologic agent of human urogenital schistosomiasis. These snails also act as vectors for the transmission of schistosomiasis in livestock and wildlife. Despite their crucial role in human and veterinary medicine, our basic understanding at the molecular level of the entire Bulinus gen

Meta-analysis reveals less sensitivity of non-native animals than natives to extreme weather worldwide.

Extreme weather events (EWEs; for example, heatwaves, cold spells, storms, floods and droughts) and non-native species invasions are two major threats to global biodiversity and are increasing in both frequency and consequences. Here we synthesize 443 studies and apply multilevel mixed-effects metaregression analyses to compare the responses of 187 non-native and 1,852 native animal species across terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems to different types of EWE. Our results show that marine animals, regardless of whether they are non-native or native, are overall insensitive to EWEs, ex

Co-occurrence of freshwater and marine phycotoxins: A record of microcystins and domoic acid in Bogue Sound, North Carolina (2015 to 2020).

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) create issues both environmentally and economically in coastal regions, especially if algal growth is linked to the production of toxins which can affect ecosystems, wildlife, and humans. This study is the first to confirm near year-round presence and co-occurrence of microcystins (MCs) and domoic acid (DA) within the outskirts of the largest lagoonal US estuary, the Pamlico-Albemarle Sound System (PASS). Monthly sampling at a time-series location in Bogue Sound, located within the eastern part of the PASS, showed DA and MCs were commonly present and detected togeth

A checklist and key to the Ivorian freshwater crabs, with the description of a new species of Liberonautes Bott, 1955 (Brachyura: Potamoidea: Potamonautidae).

A new freshwater crab species of Liberonautes Bott, 1955 from Mt. Tonkori in the Upper Guinea rainforest in Côte d'Ivoire, West Africa is described. Liberonautes constantini n. sp. is morphologically distinct from other species of this genus found in Côte d'Ivoire and the neighboring countries. The new species is recognised by a unique combination of morphological characters of the carapace, thoracic sternum, major cheliped, and adult male first gonopod. Illustrations of L. constantini n. sp. are provided and differences from congeners found elsewhere in West Africa are discussed. The addition

Protistan epibionts affect prey selectivity patterns and vulnerability to predation in a cyclopoid copepod.

Colonisation of crustacean zooplankton with ciliate epibionts is widespread in freshwater and marine environments. However, the ecology of such association are little studied as yet. The occurrence of ciliate epibionts on copepods and the preference towards this association with different life stages of Mesocyclops were studied from winter to spring. Relative susceptibility of zooplankton species was evaluated by analysing the epibiont colonies and zooids and relate this to the surface area of the host. The maximum epibiont infestation per unit body surface area was recorded on copepodites fol

A method for estimating time since death through analysis of substances deposited on the surface of dental enamel in a body immersed in freshwater.

Estimating the elapsed time after death of a corpse immersed in freshwater is often challenging owing to body temperature changes and the degree of postmortem lividity, and the tissues used for this assessment deteriorate drastically as the postmortem period progresses. In this study, assuming a corpse was immersed in freshwater, we analyzed changes in the amount of deposits on the enamel surface of teeth since the time of immersion using an electron probe microanalyzer. We calculated a regression equation for estimating the time of immersion in water (the time after death). We considered this

Melatonin and osmoregulation in fish: A focus on Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smoltification.

Part of the life cycle of several fish species includes important salinity changes, as is the case for the sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) or the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Salmo salar juveniles migrate downstream from their spawning sites to reach seawater, where they grow and become sexually mature. The process of preparation enabling juveniles to migrate downstream and physiologically adapt to seawater is called smoltification. Daily and seasonal variations of photoperiod and temperature play a role in defining the timing of smoltification, which may take weeks to months, depending on t

Soft-bottom community responses in a marine area influenced by recurrent dumping activities and freshwater discharges.

The results of a 3 years monitoring program to assess the effects associated with recurrent dredged spoil disposal activity in a naturally stressed subtidal coastal area subjected to estuarine inputs are described. Changes observed through time in environmental and anthropogenic variables have been analyzed using cumulated sums and compared to macrobenthic community structure. Results revealed a scarce impact of the recurrent dumping activities, with faunal assemblages derived from the main "Tellina-venus community". The magnitude of estuarine influence appeared indeed greater on the soft-bott
