[A case of hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type 1E with frontal lobe dysfunction as an initial symptom].

A 49-year-old man had developed gradually personality change, gait disturbance, and hearing loss for five years. On admission, he presented with frontal release signs, stuttering, vertical gaze palsy, sensorineural deafness, muscle rigidity, ataxia, and sensory disturbance with areflexia in the lower extremities. Brain MRI demonstrated atrophy in the cerebellum and midbrain tegmentum as well as cerebral atrophy, predominantly in the frontal lobe. He was tentatively diagnosed as progressive supranuclear palsy on the basis of clinical features and imagings. On nerve conduction study, no sensory …

Topographic organization of corticospinal projections from the frontal lobe: motor areas on the lateral surface of the hemisphere.

We examined the topographic organization of corticospinal neurons in the primary motor cortex and in the two premotor areas on the lateral surface of the hemisphere [i.e., the dorsal premotor area (PMd) and the ventral premotor area (PMv)]. In two macaques, we labeled corticospinal neurons that project beyond T7 or S2 by placing crystals of HRP into the dorsolateral funiculus at these segmental levels. In another seven macaques, we labeled corticospinal neurons that project to specific segmental levels of the spinal cord by injecting the fluorescent tracers fast blue and diamidino yellow into

[Primary intracranial yolk sac tumor developing in the frontal lobe from the inside of the sphenoidal ridge].

A case of primary intracranial yolk sac tumor, the first known case growing in the frontal lobe, is compared with similar cases of suprasellar region. The case, 18-year-old female, suffered from headache, vomiting and visual disturbance for one month prior to the hospitalization. Plain CT scan demonstrated suppressed left anterior horn and normal density area in front of it. After injection of contrast medium, the area was enhanced distinctly. The left carotid angiography displayed a hypervascular mass in the suprasellar region and tumor stain was also seen in the capillary phase. Bilateral fr…

Molecular and biochemical correlates of frontal lobe white matter degeneration in humans with alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-related brain damage caused by heavy alcohol misuse is associated with cognitive-motor impairment and white matter (WM) degeneration. Oligodendrocytes and myelin are major targets, but the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely characterized, particularly in humans. PURPOSE: This study investigates the nature of oligodendrocyte dysfunction in anterior frontal lobe tissue from humans with alcohol use disorder (AUD), focusing on molecular and biochemical pathologies that may underlie WM ARBD. METHODS: Cores of fresh frozen human postmortem frontal lobe WM from adults wit…

Alterations of gray matter volume and structural covariance network in unilateral frontal lobe low-grade gliomas.

PURPOSE: To explore the alterations of gray matter volume (GMV) and structural covariant network (SCN) in unilateral frontal lobe low-grade gliomas (FLGGs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The three dimensional (3D) T1 structural images of 117 patients with unilateral FLGGs and 68 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. The voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis and graph theoretical analysis of SCN were conducted to investigate the impact of unilateral FLGGs on the brain structure. This represents the first structural MRI study integrating both voxel-level morphometric changes and …

Alexithymia, Reward Sensitivity and Internet Addiction Symptoms: Potential Roles of Frontal Lobe Dysfunction and Negative Mood.

Previous work implicated alexithymia and reward sensitivity as risk factors for excessive internet use (internet addiction [IA]). Both personality traits have been linked to deficits of frontal lobe executive self-regulation. The present study proposed that frontal dysfunction underlies the links of alexithymia and reward sensitivity with IA symptoms, while also assessing negative mood as another potential mediator. An online sample of 310 internet users aged 18-65 years completed measures of alexithymia, reward sensitivity, negative mood, and IA symptoms. The Frontal Systems Behaviour Scale (…

tDCS-induced enhancement of cognitive flexibility in autism: role of frontal lobe and associated neural circuits.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction and restricted, repetitive behaviors (RRBs). These symptoms may stem from cognitive flexibility deficits, with dysfunction in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and related neural circuits proposed as underlying mechanisms. OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) could enhance PFC activity and functional connectivity, thereby improving cognitive flexibility in a valproic acid (VPA)-induced ASD rat model. METHODS: Pregnant Sprague-Daw

Connectome-guided initiation of dopamine agonists facilitates cognitive recovery after frontal lobe resection: A case report.

Abulia is a common problem that manifests following various brain conditions, including brain surgeries. Abulia is felt to be related to dysfunction with the brain's dopamine-dependent circuitry. The role of default mode network (DMN) in its pathogenesis is crucial. In this case report, we detail the presentation of abulia in an elderly woman following surgical resection of a right frontal glioblastoma involving the DMN. Connectomic imaging was used pre-operatively and post-operatively, demonstrating disruption of regions integral to the DMN and the central executive network. We observed a sig

Awake Surgery for Right Frontal Lobe Glioma: Preserving Emotional Recognition and Facilitating Early Return to Work.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Many glioma patients struggle to return to work after surgery because of higher brain dysfunction. Although the right frontal lobe has historically been considered functionally silent, reports of performing awake surgery to evaluate higher brain functions in patients with tumors in this area have increased. We present two cases of patients who underwent awake surgery for malignant glioma in the right frontal lobe to preserve emotional recognition and facilitate an early return to work. CASE REPORT: Case 1 was a 48-year-old right-handed woman employed as a nursery school teache…

Enhanced focal cortical dysplasia detection in pediatric frontal lobe epilepsy with asymmetric radiomic and morphological features.

OBJECTIVE: Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is the most common pathological cause for pediatric epilepsy, with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) being the most prevalent in the pediatric population. We attempted to utilize radiomic and morphological methods on MRI and PET to detect FCD in children with FLE. METHODS: Thirty-seven children with FLE and 20 controls were included in the primary cohort, and a five-fold cross-validation was performed. In addition, we validated the performance in an independent site of 12 FLE children. A two-stage experiments including frontal lobe and subregions were emplo…

Front and center: Maturational dysregulation of frontal lobe functional neuroanatomic connections in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Frontal lobe function may not universally explain all forms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) but the frontal lobe hypothesis described supports an internally consistent model for integrating the numerous behaviors associated with ADHD. The paper examines the developmental trajectories of frontal and prefrontal lobe development, framing ADHD as maturational dysregulation concluding that the cognitive, motor, and behavioral abilities of the presumptive majority of ADHD children may not primarily be disordered or dysfunctional but reflect maturational dysregulation that is incon…

Frontal lobe position after single-layer cadaveric dermal matrix repair of large anterior skull base defects.

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic repair of large anterior skull base (ASB) defects has excellent results when using multilayered repairs with a nasoseptal flap. However, in extensive intranasal tumors, a nasoseptal flap may not always be available. One alternative option is a flexible single-layer ASB repair. Initial studies indicate low cerebrospinal fluid leak rates with a single-layer repair. However, the level of frontal lobe support, particularly the propensity for a significant inferior displacement of the frontal lobe, is not known. The goal of this study is to determine the frontal lobe position …
