Current guidelines recommend surveillance for gastric adenocarcinoma in patients with extensive chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG), which is considered a premalignant condition. Although the association between vitamin B12 deficiency and CAG is well described, the indication for endoscopic investigation is only advised in patients with pernicious anaemia. Our case did not have evidence of autoimmune or H. pylori infection but despite this she had CAG. We suggest considering gastroscopy for severe, unexplained vitamin B12 deficiency, particularly in this patient group.

A 35-year-old woman who had previously undergone a lung transplantation presented with severe abdominal pain and vomiting. The gastroscopy showed diffuse ulcerative gastric lesions. Tests for varicella zoster virus and Epstein-Barr virus via polymerase chain reactions (PCR) on endoscopically obtained gastric biopsies were found to be positive and confirmed varicella gastritis. Intravenous antiviral therapy with acyclovir was administered resulting in a normalization of all clinical symptoms, especially of abdominal pain and inflammation parameters.

Adult intussusception represents 5% of all cases of intussusception and accounts for only 1-5% intestinal obstructions. Intussusception is a rare complication after gastric surgery with an incidence estimated at 0.1%. Early diagnosis of the acute onset intussusception is critical because mortality rates increase abruptly with delay in surgical treatment. We present here a case of jejunogastric intussusception diagnosed by gastroscopy in a patient with a history of distal gastrectomy due to early gastric cancer who had experienced hematemesis.

Diagnosis of edema secondary to hypoprotidemia but without nutritional, renal, hepatic or cardiac cause, must consider exudative digestive disease, of which the lymphocytic gastritis, as the authors report here a new observation diagnosed in a 73 year-old woman. Gastroscopy reveals varioliform gastritis and biopsy demonstrates diffuse infiltration of the gastric epithelium by lymphocytes, making of it a real histopathologic entity among the gastropathies. Etiology and pathogeny remain still unknown but proton pump gastric inhibitors are an effective treatment.

Inguinal lymphonodal metastases of an adenocarcinoma were diagnosed in a 40-year-old patient by ultrasound guided puncture. The leading symptom was elephantiasis preferentially of the right lower extremity. In addition, atypical mycobacteriosis was detected later on. The causal gastric cancer had not been identified during two years until the fourth gastroscopy assisted by endoscopic ultrasonography revealed the lesion. No regional lymph node metastases were found while distant metastases in terms of inguinal lymph nodes were already present.

Portal hypertension-related esophagogastric variceal bleeding (EVB) is deadly. Therefore, multidisciplinary management involving hepatologists, digestive endoscopy, radiological intervention, and/or surgery is necessary. Digestive endoscopy is the core of the multidisciplinary approach to the overall management of portal hypertension. It plays an important role in the early warning, emergency treatment, and the prevention of the initial and re-bleeding of portal hypertension accompanied by esophagogastric varices. In addition, gastroscopy with endoscopic ultrasound scanning can enhance the man…

A 67-year-old patient was admitted to our hospital with lack of appetite and upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The immediately performed emergency gastroscopy showed a giant subepithelial tumour with ulceration located in the antrum. Emerging from the tumourous ulcer was a peg-shaped outgrowth reaching through the pylorus down to the duodenum causing gastric outlet obstruction. Based on this unusual presentation of a gastric giant lipoma we have reviewed the literature concerning differential diagnosis and treatment options.

A case has been presented of a patient with a 12-year history of unexplained gastrointestinal bleeding who developed severe aortic stenosis. Small telangiectasia were finally noted on his lip and gastroscopy revealed gastric and duodenal telangiectasia though he had no history of epistaxis and an unremarkable family history. Patients with aortic stenosis and unexplained gastrointestinal bleeding should be carefully evaluated for hemorrhagic telangiectasia in spite of a negative family history and no visible evidence of telangiectasia.

We present the case of a 42-year old man who went to the emergency department because of spasmodic abdominal pain. The abdomen was soft. A gastroscopy and a colonoscopy were without pathological findings. The laboratory analyses indicated anemia. The differential blood count showed basophilic granules in the red blood cells. The blood lead level was elevated. A lead poisoning was diagnosed. The cause was the oral intake of an ayurvedic medication which the patient had received in Bangladesh to treat his vitiligo.

PURPOSE: Gastrointestinal bleeding, an uncommon complication of polycythemia can be the inaugural sign in exceptional cases.
CASE REPORT: A 35-year-old patient was hospitalized for upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Physical examination and laboratory tests led to the diagnosis of polycythemia (Vaquez disease). Gastroscopy showed an hemorrhagic bulber ulcer. Outcome was favorable after chemotherapy and antinuclear treatment.
CONCLUSION: Based on this observation and data in the literature we propose that this unusual presentation would suggest a relationship between polycythemia and ulcer dise…

An intragastric blood clot suggested by sonography and later confirmed at upper gastrointestinal series and at gastroscopy is reported. Sonographic findings were a moveable mass within stomach presenting as an arc-like hyperechoic surface with a strong posterior resonance artifact. Compression of the mass with a transducer induced the mass to move from antrum to corpus within stomach. We think that the demonstration of a blood clot within stomach can be suggested on the basis of typical sonographic findings as a secondary sign of a bleeded gastric or duodenal ulcer.

A case report is presented, concerning a 68-year-old woman, with gastro-intestinal complaints, six weeks after an aortic arteriography. On gastroscopy a duodenal ulcer was found and multiple purple discolourations. Biopsies show that these discolourations were caused by cholesterol-emboli. As the patient's complaints resided quickly after treatment for duodenal ulcer, the cholesterol-emboli can be seen as incidental findings. The gastroscopical biopsies were an important clue to the diagnosis of the cause of the rapid progressive renal failure in this patient.

Twelve patients suffering from haemorrhages from a superficial exulceration (Dieulafoy's disease) were treated on an emergency basis during the period from 1981 to 1987. Preoperative diagnosis by means of gastroscopy was possible in 3 cases only. The sites of predilection within the cardia and near to it, except the curvatures, determined the surgical access by means of high gastrotomy-independent of a verification of the diagnosis. In 11 cases the therapy consisted of the purse-string ligature, in one case endoscopic sclerosing was successful. The mortality rate was 16.6%.

Biopsy specimens were taken from intact areas of antral mucosa in 100 consecutive consenting patients presenting for gastroscopy. Spiral or curved bacilli were demonstrated in specimens from 58 patients. Bacilli cultured from 11 of these biopsies were gram-negative, flagellate, and microaerophilic and appeared to be a new species related to the genus Campylobacter. The bacteria were present in almost all patients with active chronic gastritis, duodenal ulcer, or gastric ulcer and thus may be an important factor in the aetiology of these diseases.

BACKGROUND: High-density material identified in the stomach on computed tomography (CT) most commonly represents ingested drugs, oral contrast agents, or blood. Distinguishing between these is critical, as misidentifying drugs or contrast as active gastric bleeding may lead to unnecessary interventions. We report a rare cause of hyperdense gastric material on CT, other than the three etiologies mentioned above.

Background and Clinical Significanc: Congenital duodenal diaphragm (CDD) is a rare congenital condition causing partial or complete obstruction of the duodenum, most frequently located in the second part of the duodenum. It is a rare but important cause of intestinal obstruction in infants and young children. Clinically, it often presents with persistent vomiting and failure to thrive. Diagnosis can be made through abdominal X-ray showing the characteristic "double bubble" sign, upper gastrointestinal (GI) series, or gastroscopy. Case Presentation: A 17-month-old female infant with known psych…

Intestinal amyloidosis is an uncommon form of systemic amyloidosis characterized by the extracellular deposition of misfolded immunoglobulin … even more complex in cases where the disease begins in the gastrointestinal tract. In these cases, gastroscopy with biopsies is the essential technique to identify findings suggestive of amyloid infiltration and confirm the histological diagnosis using Congo red staining and immunohistochemistry for light chains.
