This study assesses artificial intelligence-based control algorithms for a transradial myoelectric prosthesis. The analysis is supported by a dataset collected from 20 Peruvian participants with transradial amputation, including congenital and traumatic cases. Each participant performed 240 gesture repetitions under varying postures with surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals recorded on the user's forearm. In Japanese, high vowels /i/ and /u/ are often devoiced when they are preceded and followed by voiceless consonants. The phenomenon is calle … /k/ in voiced syllables. This difference cannot be explained by the simple addition of the glottal gestures of [k] and [t]. Furthermore, the difference in vowel length between /i/ and /e/ was related, at least in part, to the difference in the amount of the airflow passing through the vocal tract about the time the stop closure was released.

The phonemic substitution errors of ten apractic speakers were analyzed to investigate the effects of markedness on speech production patterns. Results revealed that: more errors were produced on phonemes high in markedness; more changes in markedness were from marked to unmarked than unmarked to marked; and errors and directional changes in markedness were positively correlated with ease of articulation. The findings were interpreted as a systematic effort by the apractic speakers to reduce the complexity of articulatory gestures required to produce phonemes.

The bilateral choanal atresia is a neonatal emergency. Its diagnosis is easily evoked when faced with a respiratory distress and cyanosis. It is quickly confirmed by a nasal optic endoscopy or when a nasopharyngeal aspiration catheter is held up by an obstacle. Putting a pharyngeal Mayo's cannula is an urgent gesture. The treatment uses transnasal perforation of the septum followed for two months with frequent aspirations.

Childhood apraxia of speech and oral dyspraxia are subtypes of dyspraxia: a neurological motor disorder with absence of neuromuscular deficits. The core impairment is in planning and/or programming spatiotemporal parameters of movement sequences, which results in errors in speech sound production and prosody, or in oral motor movements and gestures. Correct diagnostics and focus on differential diagnoses and co-morbidity are crucial, as treatment differs from other types of speech- and oral motor disorders. Early and specialized intervention is recommended.

An 11 year-old girl had an urinary diversion because of a complex uropathy with vesical sphincter dyssinergism. Her inexpressive face with lost eyes and forced gestures, especially when smiling--her smile looking rather like weeping--was the clue to the diagnosis of Ochoa's syndrome. She underwent psoic bladder fixation, right ureteral reimplantation, bladder neck loosening and cystostomy undiversion. At follow-up, renal function deteriorated. She has recently received a kidney transplantation in another institution, and is now symptom-free.
