FNAC study of giant cell tumor of tendon sheath (localized tenosynovial giant cell tumor): Clinico-radiological correlation and cytopathological features.

BACKGROUND: Localized tenosynovial giant cell tumor (GCT) or giant cell tumor of tendon sheath (GCTTS), is a benign nodular lesion that arises from the synovium of the tendon sheath of the hands and foot. GCTTS is characterized by the presence of multinucleated giant cells and proliferation of synovial-like mononuclear cells. A clinical diagnosis of GCTTS is kept as a differential when a firm, nodular mass shows decreased signal intensity on both T1-and T2-weighted MR imaging. Treatment is usually marginal excision of the mass. MATERIAL AND METHODS: It is a retrospective study, observed in th…

Treatment of Giant Cell Tumor of Soft Tissue Disguised as Giant Cell Tumor of the Bone Involving the Distal and Proximal Phalanges of the Great Toe.

Giant cell tumors are benign tumors that are locally aggressive and rare in the foot. Giant cell tumors involving bone in the foot have an incidence of 1.2% to 2.8%, whereas giant cell tumors of the tendon sheath constitute 3% to 5% of all giant cell tumors in the foot and ankle. We present a case of giant cell tumor of the soft tissue disguised as a giant cell tumor of bone in a healthy 29-year-old male patient. Through radiographic and magnetic resonance imaging evaluation, it was determined that this patient had a bone tumor invading the distal and proximal phalanges of his left great toe w

A peripheral giant cell granuloma with extensive osseous metaplasia or a hybrid peripheral giant cell granuloma-peripheral ossifying fibroma: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral giant cell granuloma and peripheral ossifying fibroma are clinicopathologically distinct gingival lesions. Both are included in clinical differential diagnoses of common benign and reactive gingival epulides in humans. It is often impossible to make a clinical distinction between the two entities, thereby making definitive diagnosis dependent on histopathologic features. While our search of the English literature revealed several reports of peripheral giant cell granuloma with 'bone formation', we were unable to identify any reports of hybrid peripheral ossifying fibro

Giant cell tumour and central giant cell reparative granuloma of the skull: do these represent ends of a spectrum? A case report and literature review.

Giant cell tumour (GCT) of bone is an uncommon primary bone neoplasm typically occurring at the epiphyses of long bones in young adults. They are osteolytic neoplasms with approximate local recurrence rates of 25%, and 2% of patients develop pulmonary metastases. These tumours appear very rarely in the skull, with those few reported cases arising predominantly in the sphenoid and occasionally the temporal bones. They demonstrate benign histological features, but are locally aggressive and surgical excision is the treatment of choice. It is widely believed that giant cell tumours should be dist

Candida auris cells form giant lipid droplets to survive in harsh environments.

The emerging fungal pathogen Candida auris is notorious for environmental persistence, which is a major contributor to outbreaks in healthcare settings. Here we report that giant lipid droplets (gLDs) inside C. auris cells play critical roles in the ability to survive harsh environments. C. auris cells that contain gLDs exhibit an increased tolerance to environmental stresses, antifungals, and host-associated antimicrobial peptides. These cells often undergo significant cell wall remodeling and sloughing of the outer layer of the cell wall. Lipidomics analysis indicates that cells with gLDs co

Invasive breast carcinoma with osteoclast-like stromal giant cells: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Invasive breast carcinoma with osteoclast-like stromal giant cells (OGCs) is an extremely rare morphology of breast carcinomas. To the best of our knowledge, the most recent case report describing this rare pathology was published six years ago. The mechanism controlling the development of this unique histological formation is still unknown. Further, the prognosis of patients with OGC involvement is also controversial. CASE SUMMARY: We report the case of a 48-year-old woman, who presented to the outpatient department with a palpable, growing, painless mass in her left breast for a…

Paclitaxel Induce Apoptosis of Giant Cells Tumor of Bone via TP53INP1 Signaling.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the antitumor capability and to investigate the underlying molecular mechanism of paclitaxel. METHODS: First, cck-8 and apoptosis assays were used to determine survival and apoptotic effects of HS 737.T cells under treatment of paclitaxel. Next, RNA-seq and bioinformatics were used to determine the differentially expressed genes and to analyze the pathway involved. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to verify the accuracy of some differentially expressed genes (DEG). ClueGO was used to decode and visualize functionally grouped GO terms of differen

Doublecortin immunoreactivity in giant cells of tuberous sclerosis and focal cortical dysplasia.

Cerebral cortical lesions of tuberous sclerosis (TSC) and focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) show disturbances in laminar architecture and cellular differentiation. We immunohistochemically studied the expression of doublecortin, a fetal neuronal protein that regulates neuronal migration, in the surgical specimens of five TSC and eight FCD patients. In both TSC and FCD, bizarre giant cells showed a variable degree of doublecortin immunoreactivity. Both cytomegalic neurons and balloon cells were positive. The staining tended to be more intense in TSC than in FCD, although there were exceptional cas…

Bilateral infiltrating lobular carcinoma of the breast with osteoclast-like giant cells.

A case of bilateral infiltrating lobular carcinoma of the breast containing osteoclast-like giant cells is presented. Notable pathologic features include prominent tumor-associated angiogenesis and the presence of osteoclast-like giant cells in axillary lymph node metastases. Immunohistologic and ultrastructural examination support a nonepithelial, histiocytic origin for the giant cells, and results are similar to previous reports of osteoclast-like giant cells associated with breast carcinoma. This is the first report of bilateral pure infiltrating lobular carcinoma of the breast with osteocl…

Stromal osteoclast-like giant cells in an adenosquamous carcinoma of the gallbladder.

We report a case an adenosquamous carcinoma of the gallbladder that extended to the proximal transverse colon. Metastatic tumor was present in regional lymph nodes and the liver. Microscopically, the tumor was composed of malignant epithelial cells that were cytokeratin-, epithelial membrane antigen-, and carcinoembryonic antigen-positive. The adjacent desmoplastic stroma of the primary tumor, as well as the metastasis, contained giant cells that morphologically resembled osteoclasts. Immunohistochemical studies showed that the giant cells were cytokeratin-, epithelial membrane antigen-, and c…

Ultrastructure of multinuclear giant cells of a human vocal cord Teflon granuloma.

The ultrastructural characteristics of multinuclear foreign-body giant cells (MCG) in a human vocal cord Teflon granuloma are described. The cells were found to contain varying numbers of Teflon particles within their cytoplasm. The particles, rounded or oval in shape, were surrounded by a rather electron-dense membrane. Numerous lysosomal structures were discerned within the cells. The fine structure of MCG in granulomas induced by foreign materials other than Teflon has already been described in man as well as in several experimental animals, and the Teflon MCG resembled these cells in many …

Giant cells in male pattern alopecia: a histologic marker and pathogenetic clue.

Twenty-one of 65 (31%) biopsy specimens from patients with male pattern alopecia demonstrated the presence of individually displaced multinucleate giant cells without a significant concomitant cellular infiltrate. This finding was absent in a diverse group of other forms of alopecia. Whether individually displaced multinucleate cells are a useful histologic marker for diagnosing early stages of androgenetic alopecia remains to be determined.

[Giant cells arteritis. A disease previously reported as various syndromes (author's transl)].

Thirteen cases of giant cell arteritis admitted to a Department of Internal Medicine between 1962 and 1977 are reviewed. Giant cell arteritis exhibited different clinical forms, including: temporal arteritis, rheumatic polymyalgia, syndrome of the supra-aortic trunks, cranial arteritis in its ophthalmic and neurologic forms, and generalized arteritis. On the basis of the clinical data, overall examinations, laboratory tests, X-rays, angiograms and histopathologic findings the authors conclude that a single disease is involved. The fact that various of the symptoms occur simultaneously in diffe

Multinucleated mammary stromal giant cells: a benign lesion that simulates invasive carcinoma.

Multinucleated stromal giant cells were found in breast tissue from 14 patients treated by mastectomy for carcinoma over 3 decades (1950s to 1970s). Nine cases were found in a review of 200 consecutive mastectomies (4.5%) performed in 1978. The average age was 51 years with nine patients in their 40s. Other than the age distribution, no association with marital status, family history of breast carcinoma, hormone usage, tumor type, or stage of disease was observed. This benign lesion of undetermined significance should not be misinterpreted as invasive carcinoma. Multinucleated stromal giant ce…

Tenosynovial giant cell tumor presenting as a parotid gland mass: Expanding the differential diagnosis of giant cell-rich lesions in salivary glands.

Tenosynovial giant cell tumors (TGCT) are rare benign soft tissue tumors affecting mostly young adults. The most common affected sites include the knee, ankle, elbow, shoulder, and fingers. The temporomandibular joint is occasionally affected. Herein, we report a case of a 31-year-old Caucasian male who presented clinically with a parotid gland mass. The initial clinical and radiological work-up failed to reveal any involvement of the adjacent temporomandibular joint. Fine-needle aspiration revealed a cellular tumor composed of mononuclear and multinucleated giant cells with fibrosis and hemos…

DC-STAMP is essential for cell-cell fusion in osteoclasts and foreign body giant cells.

Osteoclasts are bone-resorbing cells that play a pivotal role in bone remodeling. Osteoclasts form large multinuclear giant cells by fusion of mononuclear osteoclasts. How cell fusion is mediated, however, is unclear. We identify the dendritic cell-specific transmembrane protein (DC-STAMP), a putative seven-transmembrane protein, by a DNA subtraction screen between multinuclear osteoclasts and mononuclear macrophages. DC-STAMP is highly expressed in osteoclasts but not in macrophages. DC-STAMP-deficient mice were generated, and osteoclast cell fusion was completely abrogated in homozygotes des…

Rare Recurrent Giant Frontal Osteoma With Skin Multiple Keratinous Cysts and Multinucleated Giant Cell Granulomas.

BACKGROUND: Osteoma is the most common benign tumor of the craniomaxillofacial region. Its etiology remains unclear, and the computed tomography and histopathologic examination contribute to its diagnosis. There are very rare reports of recurrence and malignant transformation after surgical resection. Furthermore, giant frontal osteomas that occurred repeatedly and were accompanied by skin multiple keratinous cysts and multinucleated giant cell granulomas have not been reported in previous literature. METHODS: The previous cases of recurrent frontal osteoma in the literature and all cases of
