A review of the pattern, and antibiotic sensitivities of blood culture isolates over a 3 year period in children presenting to the Paediatric Unit of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Kaduna is reported. Positive blood culture isolates were obtained in 26.9% of 1,982 children. The most prevalent isolates were Staphylococcus aureus (59.9%), Escherichia coli (16.9%) and Klebsiella (16.3%). There was a striking paucity of isolation of Salmonella typhi (1.3%) and Streptococcus. Sensitivity to commonly used drugs like ampicillin/cloxacillin, genticin, ceftazidime and chloramphenicol was lo

Ceftriaxone was introduced into clinical practice in the USA in 1985 and was the first extended-spectrum (third-generation) cephalosporin approved for once-daily treatment of patients with Gram-positive or Gram-negative infections. Review of ceftriaxone activity is important given its continued use since the mid-1980s and reports of emerging resistance among all antimicrobial agent classes. We reviewed the activity of ceftriaxone and relevant comparative agents against five Gram-positive and 11 Gram-negative species for a 5-year period, 1996-2000, using data from The Surveillance Network (TSN)

BACKGROUND: Presepsin (soluble CD14 subtype) is a novel biomarker of sepsis used for early diagnosis. Originally, CD14 is known as the pattern recognition receptor for the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)/LBP complexes, and the diagnostic value of this molecule for gram-positive bacteria, which contain less amount of LPS, is uncertain. To confirm its effectiveness in the diagnosis of bacteremia caused by gram positive bacteria, and to evaluate the interspecies difference of presepsin production against various bacterial strains, we conducted an in vitro assay to evaluate presepsin levels in response t…

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL EVOLUTION: Until the mid-eighties, infectious complications (pneumonia, septicemia) observed in neutropenic patients were, in 70% of cases, of bacterial origin with Gram negative bacillae (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella sp, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) isolated 8 times out of 10. Among the Gram positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus predominated. The etiological profile of bacterial infections has since evolved with a predominance (60 to 70%) of Gram positive bacteria (coagulase-negative staphylococci, viridans streptococci) and a change in the epidemiology of the Gram positive bact

With low toxicity and good biocompatibility, carbon dots (CDs) are widely used in the fields of biosensing and drug delivery. In recent years, they have demonstrated excellent antimicrobial properties, thus becoming another research hotspot in the antimicrobial field. However, most of the studies showed that CDs were effective in inhibiting Gram-positive bacteria but ineffective against Gram-negative bacteria. In this study, macadamia nutshell (MNS)-CDs were prepared from the hard shells of macadamia nuts by a one-step hydrothermal method, and their appearance, morphology, structural compositi…

Infection is a critical challenge in burn wound therapy. Wound dressings with antibacterial and multifunctional abilities associated with rapid burn wound healing are urgently needed. Here, we developed a bioadhesive and injectable ECM-mimicking hydrogel dressing with antibacterial capacity for burn injury therapy, which is crosslinked by dynamic boronate ester bonds between modified hyaluronate and gelatin (HG). The antibiotic doxycycline (Doxy) was encapsulated in HG networks for drug delivery around the wound sites. The HG/Doxy hydrogel dressing shows biocompatibility and antibacterial acti

Microorganisms are able to give rise to biofilm formation on food matrixes and along food industry infrastructures or medical equipment. This growth may be reduced by the application of molecules preventing bacterial adhesion on these surfaces. Although many antibiotics are active against Gram-positive bacteria, fewer also show activity against Gram-negative bacteria. Here, we present a combination of in silico (electron ion-interaction potential, molecular docking, ADMET), NMR, and microbiological investigations of selected macrolides (14-membered, 15-membered, and 16-membered), aiming to discover the pattern of design for macrolides active against Gram-negative bacteria. Although the conformational studies of 14-membered and 15-membered macrolides are abundant in the literature, 16-membered macrolides, and their most prominent repr…

There are many approaches available to produce inactive bacteria by termination of growth, each with a different efficacy, impact on cell integrity, and potential for application in standardized inactivation protocols. The aim of this study was to compare these approaches and develop a standardized protocol for generation of inactivated Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yielding cells that are metabolically dead with retained cellular integrity i.e., preserving the surface and limited leakage of intracellular proteins and DNA. These inactivated bacteria are required for various applica
