Supramolecular Architectures Based on the Self-Assembly of Suberin Hydrolysate, Betulin, and Their Hybrids.

Self-assembly offers a promising approach for producing functional nanomaterials from renewable biomass sources, as demonstrated in this study investigating two hardwood birch (Betula pendula Roth) bark extractives: suberin hydrolysate (SH) and betulin fraction (BF). Using solvent inversion self-assembly with acetone, ethanol, and γ-valerolactone as solvents and water as an antisolvent, we prepared nanoparticles with tunable properties. Comprehensive characterization using FESEM image analysis revealed that SH formed predominantly rod-like structures (77-587 nm), while BF formed spherical part

Soft tissue infections in the emergency department: the case for the use of 'simple' antibiotics.

Cellulitis, infected wounds, abscesses, and other bacterial infections of skin and soft tissue are commonly seen in the practice of emergency medicine. Informal observations in a teaching hospital suggest that newer agents having a broader antibiotic spectrum are frequently used for empiric outpatient treatment of mild to moderate soft tissue infections, so information from a prospective study was analyzed to determine whether this practice is appropriate. Healthy adult volunteers were enrolled in a study of the aerobic bacteriology and response to treatment of skin and soft tissue infections.

A Halophilic vibrio isolated from a case of chronic cholecystitis.

We found a halophilic vibrio in B bile from a 75-year-old female patient with chronic cholecystitis, and examined its biochemical characteristics. The organisms are gram-negative short rods or comma shaped, with some ring forms. They have a single polar flagellum, but not capsule. The strains can grow in peptone water with 1.0 to 4.0% NaC1, but not with no NaC1 or 6.0% NaC1. The characteristics of the organisms are positive dextrose fermentation, catalase, oxidase, and ornithine decarboxylase, and negative lysine decarboxylase, arginine dihydrolase, and absence of gas from glucose. They are se

Lactobacillus gasseri liver abscess and bacteremia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Lactobacillus is a genus of Gram-positive non-spore-forming rods usually found in the microbiota of the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and female genitourinary tract. Also, they are commonly used in the food industry as supplements and probiotics. Lactobacilli are normally considered non-pathogenic to the human body, however, under certain circumstances such as immunosuppression, they can cause severe infections, with only a few cases of bacteremia, infective endocarditis, pneumonia, meningitis, and intra-abdominal infections reported. Among these presentations, a pyogenic li

Aminipila butyrica gen. nov., sp. nov., a strictly anaerobic, arginine-decomposing bacterium isolated from a methanogenic reactor of cattle waste.

A strictly anaerobic bacterial strain (FH042T) was isolated from a methanogenic reactor treating waste from cattle farms. Cells were stained Gram-positive, straight to gently curved rods with polar flagella. The strain was asaccharolytic. The strain fermented amino acids (l-arginine, l-lysine and l-serine) as growth substrates and produced acetate and butyrate. The optimum temperature for growth was 30 °C and the optimum pH was 6.1-6.8. Oxidase, catalase and nitrate-reducing activities were negative. Hydrogen sulfide was produced. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain FH042T was 44.7±0.2 mol%.

[Pharmacokinetic and clinical studies of cefteram pivoxil granule in the pediatric field].

Cefteram pivoxil (CFTM-PI), the pivaloyloxymethyl ester of cefteram (CFTM) in which aminothiazol was also introduced into the 7 position of cephem nucleus, is a new oral cephem antibiotic. CFTM-PI was absorbed through the intestines and hydrolyzed to CFTM by esterases in the intestinal wall and existed in the body fluids as CFTM. A tablet form of this drug has been released in Japan and now a granular form for pediatric patients has been developed. We have determined MICs of 5 drugs (CFTM, cephalexin (CEX), cefaclor (CCL), ampicillin (ABPC), erythromycin (EM], against stock strains and MICs of

Anaerostipes butyraticus sp. nov., an anaerobic, butyrate-producing bacterium from Clostridium cluster XIVa isolated from broiler chicken caecal content, and emended description of the genus Anaerostipes.

Four butyrate-producing isolates were obtained from the caecal content of a 4-week-old broiler chicken. The 16S rRNA gene sequences were determined and confirmed the close relatedness of the four isolates, which suggested that they were derived from a single bacterial clone. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that its closest relatives were members of cluster XIVa of the Clostridium subphylum of Gram-positive bacteria and that the closest related type strain was Anaerostipes caccae L1-92(T) (94.5 % similarity). Similarity levels of 96-98 % with sequences from uncultu
