The past decade has seen a renaissance of research interest into the psychotherapeutic potential of psychedelic compounds. In 2019, Oakland and Denver became the first two jurisdictions in the United States to decriminalize the possession of psychedelic-containing organisms. As research and public policy continue to evolve, it becomes increasingly plausible that psychedelics will become viable treatment options for psychiatric conditions. Psychiatrists should be integral to models of psychedelic prescription and patient management. The risk for adverse psychological and medical effects from ps

Psilocybin, the clinically most researched classic psychedelic has recently been tested for its safety and efficacy in a clinical population of treatment resistant depression. The efficacy of psilocybin in clinical depression previously demonstrated in the elecrophysiologic and neuroimaging findings as also in neuropsychological assessments is further validated by the findings of this rigorously conducted randomized trial. Mechanism of action of psilocybin and efficacy in treatment resistant depression are discussed in this paper. Ethical issues of conducting clinical trials with psychedelics

Recreational drug use is a significant public health concern in various countries. It is well understood that usage of psychedelics/hallucinogens, such as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), ecstasy, phencyclidine (PCP), and psilocybin-containing mushrooms, has increased significantly over the last few decades, particularly in adolescents and young adults, yet the effects of these recreational drugs are poorly understood. Psilocybin has recently been studied as an alternative to traditional antidepressant therapies with potentially benign side effects. Here, we present the case of a 48-year-old …

DBs mimic the properties of approved and … use of DBs along with other abusable or recreational drugs (alcohol, opioids, cocaine, stimulants, hallucinogens, other sedative-hypnotics) represents the principal public health risk. The increasing illicit availability and use of DBs is of concern and requires regulatory attention, but DBs do not rank highly among designer psychotropic agents in terms of hea …

The current study expands on and integrates previous theoretical models concerning the pathways that link child maltreatment to substance use disorder. The proposed model, based on the self-medication hypothesis, suggests that experiences of neglect and abuse during childhood can lead to substance use and abuse both directly and indirectly, via dissociation resulting from failed attempts to integrate experiences of maltreatment in childhood. The model was tested on ten substances (painkillers, stimulants, sedatives, marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy, hallucinogens, heroin, inhalants, and methampheta…

We sought to assess whether college students who smoked marijuana heavily were distinguishable from students who had used the drug only occa … Interview for DSM-III-R. Heavy smokers reported higher rates of use of other substances, especially hallucinogens and cocaine, and they described greater subjective impairment of memory and motivation than occasional smokers; however, on a wide range of demographic, family background, and mental health measures, the heavy smokers proved almost indistinguishable …

Antipyretics, in particular acetaminophen, aspirin and ibuprofen, constitute the single most important class of drugs used therapeutically for an effect on body temperature. Hallucinogens exert prominent actions on the central nervous system, and it is not surprising that, like so many other centrally-acting agents, they too often affect temperature. This compilation primarily covers the considerable amount of data published from 1981 through 1985 on the interactions of these drugs and thermoregulation, but data from many earlier papers not included in a previous compilation are also tabulated…

Mefenorex, N-(3-chloropropyl)-alpha-methylphenethylamine, (RONDIMEN), is included in the list of centrally acting stimulants and/or hallucinogens or related compounds to be considered by a World Health Organization (WHO) Expert Committee in 1985 for possible scheduling under the Convention on Psychotropic Substances, 1971. The therapeutic efficacy of mefenorex as an adjunctive support in the treatment of obesity for limited periods of time, as well as its ability to be well tolerated, has been amply demonstrated. There have been no reports of actual abuse. There have been no reports of illicit…

OBJECTIVE: This review critically examines psilocybin, with particular emphasis on its pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, including its serotonergic, neuroplastic, and anti-inflammatory mechanisms. It integrates historical context, preclinical and clinical evidence, and evaluates emerging therapeutic potential, safety, microdosing practices, and pharmacological interactions.
METHODS: A literature search was conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar using the keywords "Psilocybin," "Psilocin," "Psychedelic therapy," "Psilocybe cubensis," and "Psychedelic microdosing," supplemented by manual s

IMPORTANCE: Psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) trials have high levels of functional unblinding, which biases results when comparing PAT with blinded interventions. Because PAT is effectively always open label, treatment results should be compared with those of open-label traditional antidepressants (TADs), so potential benefits associated with patients knowing their treatment is equal between the interventions.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the comparative effectiveness of PAT vs open-label traditional antidepressants (TADs; such as selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors) for

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) have complex presentations with high rates of comorbidities and low recovery rates. Current treatment options often lack sufficiency in improving ED symptoms. Psychedelic-assisted therapies represent a novel treatment approach for the treatment of EDs, with research documenting preliminary positive evidence. However, psychedelics have their own challenges and risks which need to be considered within an ED population to inform study design and future clinical application. The primary aim of this meta-synthesis was to integrate existing qualitative data on the

There is a large and rapidly growing body of literature investigating the therapeutic effects of classic psychedelics in affective and anxiety disorders, but very few studies have examined the inverse of this, that is, the potential for psychedelics to inflict anxiety and affective symptoms. A systematic literature search was performed and 39 papers were included in the final review to qualitatively synthesize the current literature on anxiety and affective disorders related to the use of classic psychedelics. Persisting disorders were less frequent but generally occurred in individuals who pr

INTRODUCTION: Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy (PAP) is emerging as a promising approach for treating various treatmentresistant psychiatric disorders. Despite the expansion of this practice, few studies have examined nursing contribution.
OBJECTIVES: This review explores nursing contributions to PAP in psychiatry and analyzes the challenges related to nurses’ contributions.
METHOD: A scoping review was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology, exploring several databases.
RESULTS: Twelve publications were included. Their number has increased since 2020, and t

In mental health care, attributing improvement to a specific treatment often remains difficult, a phenomenon that we propose to describe here as "therapeutic opacity." Moreover, the conditions under which many clinical studies are conducted often differ substantially from those of routine clinical practice, raising questions about their ecological validity. Drawing on debates surrounding antidepressants, psychedelics, and psychotherapies, this article argues for an approach to care that takes into account the contexts, individual trajectories, and relational factors that shape therapeutic outc

Neuroinflammation is a critical factor in the pathogenesis of various neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and major depressive disorder. Psychedelics, such as psilocybin, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), and dimethyltryptamine (DMT), have demonstrated promising therapeutic effects on neuroinflammation, primarily through interactions with serotonin (5-HT) receptors, particularly the 5-HT2A receptor. Activation of these receptors by psychedelics modulates the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, regulates microglial activity, and
