Traumatic crush injury of the thumb is devastating and often resulted in poor functional outcome. Various reconstruction options available according to surgical expertise. Masquelet technique is well-established in the long bones of lower limb. Only a handful of cases reported for thumb, especially in Asia region. We described a case of crush injury of right thumb following a trauma. The bony defect was initially filled with antibiotic spacer and subsequent reconstruction with tricortical iliac graft, a modified Masquelet two-stage technique. It is a versatile tool which provide satisfactory f

Lung cancer commonly metastasizes to ipsilateral and contralateral lungs, to mediastinal lymph nodes, to skeletal level, to brain, and to adrenal gland. It is indeed very rare to find skeletal metastases at the extremities, especially at the onset of the disease. We share the case of a 53-year-old man with dyspnea and pain at the level of the first finger of the left hand under antibiotic treatment for suspected osteomyelitis. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography showed the presence of a left lung lesion with multiple localizations at muscles and bones.

Wrist injuries are a common complaint in the emergency setting. Any disruption of the anatomy of the carpal bones can impair hand function, leading to pain, weakness, and complications. One of the most common forms of carpal bone instability is scapholunate dissociation. This injury can lead to significant morbidity including avascular necrosis, impaired healing, limited function, and arthritis. These diagnostic findings may be subtle, thus identifying high-risk mechanisms of injury, and clinical manifestations will assist the emergency practitioner with early diagnosis and treatment of this h

Complex hand injuries are those that involve significant soft-tissue loss with variable exposure of bones and/or joints, lacerated tendons, and neurovascular structures. Management of these injuries is optimally accomplished through the restoration of thin, pliable, ideally sensate tissue with reliable vascularity and a gliding surface to facilitate restoration of motion after repair. Unfortunately, optimal restoration may require complex surgical reconstruction and/or staged surgical procedures. This article presents an overview of some of the more commonly used options available to the recon

Sixty-one patients with fractures of the shafts of both bones of the forearm treated by internal fixation were studied retrospectively. The importance of the rigidity of the fixation and the time that elapsed before operation was investigated. Eight cases of non-union and one of delayed union were noted after fractures which had been operated on during the first week by non-rigid internal fixation. On the other hand, in the group of rigidly fixed fractures, the time of operation was not found to have a statistically significant effect on the healing process.

Acute hand infections are often caused by puncture wounds and are generally classified into superficial or deep infections. Superficial infections occur in the skin and subcutaneous tissues, whereas deep infections can involve the tendon sheaths, adjacent anatomic compartments, deep fascial planes, bursae, joint spaces, and bones. Superficial hand infections are more common than deep infections and are typically managed with elevation, warm soaks, splinting in the position of function, analgesics, and empiric antibiotics when indicated. Paronychia, which can be acute or chronic, is an infectio

BACKGROUND: Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) is a severe arthropathy that causes deformity. Patients with advanced stages of KBD often show symptoms, such as short stature. Early-stage diagnosis and treatment can effectively prevent the disease from worsening. Diagnosis of early-stage patients is usually made by X-ray examination. However, the time-consuming image recognition and the lack of professional doctors may delay the patient's condition. Therefore, a method that can efficiently complete the auxiliary diagnosis is necessary.
PURPOSE: This study presents a KBD auxiliary diagnosis method based

Enchondromas are benign bone tumours originating from cartilages. It is mainly discovered incidentally in radiographs or due to symptoms like pathological fracture or pain. Conservative treatment through regular check-up and surgical excision using curettage are the two major treatment methods for enchondromas. This review concludes that small localized asymptomatic lesions can be treated conservatively while most expanding or symptomatic lesions should be treated with simple curettage. Adjuvant treatments like high-speed burring or alcohol instillation are not recommended.

An oligodactylous variant of Cenani-Lenz syndactyly and its surgical treatment is presented. The deformity is believed to be of autosomal recessive inheritance and caused by a disordered axial and longitudinal differentiation of the upper and lower extremities. The classical form is mainly characterised by a complete syndactyly of the hands. Malformations may also affect the bones of the forearm and, to a lesser extent, the lower limbs. We analysed clinical features and compared them with those previously described. According to our research of literature and our clinical findings there seem t

We describe a very unusual combination, and previously unreported, of malformations in an 18-week, spontaneously aborted male fetus. The fetus had a reversed dorsoventral positioning of the head and upper limbs relative to the body axis with the head and both upper limbs directed dorsally, and an abrupt rotation of the vertebral bones at the level of CZ The fetus also had asplenia, single ventricle, and conotruncus. The fetus also had flexion deformities at the wrist, reduction deformity of the left second digit, anomalies in ossification of the bones of the left hand, and bilateral talipes ca

This paper represented 500 patients with chronic osteomyelitis who were treated with Chinese medicinal herbs, Gan-ling Immersion Formula, in which focuses were soaked in combination with other therapies from 1986-1989. Healing rate was 83.2%. Effective rate was 98.0%. This therapeutic method was more effective for treating chronic osteomyelitis of the hand and the foot with shorter course. It was also good for treating refractory skin ulcer and scar, ilium osteomyelitis and sclerosing osteomyelitis. This method was immediately effective for acute attack of chronic osteomyelitis. Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disorder characterized by noncaseating granulomas infiltrating affected organs. Any organ system can be involved, and more than 90 % of patients have a primary pulmonary manifestation. The incidence of radiographically evident bone involvement has been reported over a wide range: from 3 to 39 % depending on the population studied and imaging modalities used. Any bone may be affected in osseous sarcoidosis. Bilateral involvement of the phalanges of the hand and feet is most common. However, reports of long bone, skull, rib and vertebral involvement have appeared.

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to perform detailed analysis of the involved soft tissues, tendons, joints, and bones in the hands and wrists of patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed 23 contrast-enhanced MR imaging studies (13 hands and 10 wrists) in 10 patients with the clinical diagnosis of PsA. We obtained clinical information from medical records and evaluated images for the presence of erosions, bone marrow edema, joint synovitis, tenosynovitis, carpal tunnel, and soft tissue involvement. Two board-certified musculoskeletal radiologists reviewed all ima

Archaeological sites often contain accumulations of remains derived from different independent events produced by different agents. Thus, in Palaeolithic sites, it is normal to find alternating occupations between humans and carnivores. The faunal assemblages at these sites usually include hundreds or thousands of bone fragments, which are very difficult to associate them to specific individuals since there are no currently available techniques able to do it in a straightforward and cost-effective way. In this work we present a methodology that allows us to characterise the anatomical remains
