Family structure, adolescent mental health, and the role of advisors in the cultural and social context of South Korea.

Prior research consistently reports differences in mental health outcomes among adolescents between intact and non-intact families, highlighting the need to address these disparities. This study aims to investigate the moderating effect of advisers (counselors, teachers, or friends) on the mental health of adolescents from non-intact families. We conducted a cross-sectional study using data from the 2017 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey, a large, representative nationwide sample of adolescents. We included 61,572 middle and high school students living with at least one parent, catego

The impact of UK social distancing guidance on the ability to access support and the health and wellbeing of disabled people during the COVID-19 pandemic: a qualitative exploration.

BACKGROUND: The sudden introduction of social distancing measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in significant lifestyle changes for the UK population. People living with physical disabilities were deemed to be at greater risk of complications following COVID-19 infection and were subjected to stricter social distancing guidelines. But gaps remain in our understanding of how the COVID-19 pandemic and associated restrictions affected the ability to access support, health and wellbeing of people with physical disabilities. Such understanding is vital to ensure equitable future pa

A study of well-being of elderly people in three communities in Zimbabwe.

The purpose of this research was to assess the well-being of elderly people in three different community types in Zimbabwe. Well-being was defined as general health, health resource access, nutrition, habits, and physical function. Major health problems, hygiene, nutrition and access to health care did vary between communities, but there was a low level of physical dependency throughout. The findings suggest that once a critical decline in fitness occurs, elderly people may rapidly die as a result of diminished medical and physical support. These findings are relevant to future plans for elder

Financial health and psychiatric symptoms among veterans with psychosis or recent homelessness during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacted the physical health of some vulnerable groups, but further study is needed to investigate the pandemic's impact on financial health and mental well-being. We analyzed data from 158 participants, consisting of 59 veterans with a psychotic disorder (PSY), 49 recently housed veterans (RHV), and a control group of 50 veterans (CTL) who were assessed five times from May 2020-July 2021. This study compared the financial health of these three groups and examined the relation between financial health and psychiatric symptoms. Although the CTL group rep

Reframing Dementia Prevention Strategies Aligned with the WHO Global Action Plan: A Structured Narrative Review Focusing on Mild Behavioral Impairment.

Background/Objectives: Dementia represents a growing public health challenge. The WHO Global Action Plan on the Public Health Response to Dementia emphasizes early detection, risk reduction, and innovation as key priorities. Mild Behavioral Impairment (MBI), defined as the emergence of persistent neuropsychiatric symptoms in older individuals, represents a potential marker of early neurodegeneration and possible window for early intervention. This review explores the role of MBI in dementia prevention, mapping current evidence within the WHO Global Action Plan framework. Methods: A comprehensi

Chikungunya fever, falciparum malaria, dengue fever, Japanese encephalitis... are we listening to the warning signs for public health in India?

The 2005-epidemic of Chikungunya fever highlights the weaknesses of public health in India. The failure to control mosquitoes, and the illnesses transmitted by them, has resulted in recurrent outbreaks all over the country. This is inevitable given the larger scenario: neglect of the basic requirements of health; poor political support for health; a weak public health capacity; centralised programmes for control based on selective interventions, and poorly-planned development projects which have created conditions ideal for the outbreak of disease. All these issues are concerns for public heal

Managed alcohol: one community's innovative response to risk management during COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Harm reduction programs often lack community-based support and can be controversial, despite data demonstrating effectiveness. This article describes one small Alaskan community's development of a harm reduction managed alcohol program (MAP) in the context of a city-run quarantine site for individuals experiencing homelessness. The MAP was developed to support quarantining by COVID-19-exposed or COVID-positive individuals who also experienced chronic homelessness, a severe alcohol use disorder, and heightened health risks related to potentially unsupported alcohol withdrawal. Leveraging Laboratory Information Management Systems to Support HIV and Other Infectious Diseases Testing in PEPFAR-Supported Countries.

Laboratory information management systems (LIMSs) are an important tool for public health laboratory operations and serve the data needs of public health programs. A comprehensive and interoperable LIMS allows laboratory staff to ensure quality management of laboratory operations. It also provides timely client care through direct access to diagnostic data and tracks important public health trends. Here, we describe the implementation and adaptation of HIV-related LIMSs in 3 countries supported by PEPFAR (President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief)-namely, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe-to suppo

An Analysis on the Implementation of the Evidence-based PCOS Lifestyle Guideline: Recommendations from Women with PCOS.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrinological disorder affecting women of reproductive age, affecting 8-13% in this group. Women with PCOS are more likely to have excess BMI, which in turn exacerbates the symptoms of PCOS in these women. The latest evidence-based guideline recommends lifestyle management as the first-line treatment for PCOS. However, the implementation of this recommendation through health services faces a significant challenge. As part of the mapping of the implementation plan for lifestyle management in PCOS, citizen panels and semi-structured intervie

Exploring barriers and facilitators to shared decision-making for older adults in East Asian health systems: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Shared decision-making (SDM) is a core component of patient-centered care, yet evidence on SDM among older adults is largely derived from Western healthcare systems. Given sociocultural differences in East Asian contexts, particularly regarding family involvement, the transferability of Western SDM models remains uncertain. This study aimed to identify barriers and facilitators to SDM for older adults in East Asian healthcare systems across stakeholder groups. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted following the Arksey and O'Malley framework and PRISMA-ScR guidelin

Effects of a peer educator program for HIV status disclosure and health system strengthening: Findings from a clinic-based disclosure support program in Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: In Mozambique, HIV counseling and testing (HCT) rates are low and the cascade (or continuum) of care is poor. Perhaps more importantly, low disclosure rates and low uptake of joint testing are also related to both (1) limitations on access to services and (2) the availability of trained staff. We describe the implementation and impact of a disclosure support implemented by peer educators (PE). METHODS: Ten PEs, previously trained in basic HIV and post-test counseling, completed additional training on providing disclosure support for newly-diagnosed persons living with HIV (PLH).

Feasibility, acceptability and effectiveness of group antenatal care on maternal health continuum of care and perinatal outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Group antenatal care (G-ANC), integrating medical care with education, has demonstrated positive effects on maternal and newborn health. Individual studies have shown promising evidence in sub-Saharan Africa, but systematically synthesising the existing research would facilitate implementation and identify gaps for further research. This systematic review aimed, therefore, to review the existing evidence on feasibility, acceptability and effectiveness of G-ANC in resource-limited settings to guide policy and support implementing G-ANC to reduce maternal and perinatal mortality. Supporting breastfeeding mothers in hospital: part 1.

Breastfeeding makes a vital contribution to the health and development of babies, as well as to long term health. Establishing breastfeeding may not be easy even for mothers with healthy full-term babies. Mothers in the paediatric environment experience additional challenges: sick babies, delayed onset of breastfeeding and having to establish and maintain breastfeeding in situations where privacy may be limited and anxiety levels high. This first part of a two-part article describes the development of a breastfeeding support service in a tertiary children's hospital. Institutional support, a d

Public health's response to a changed world: September 11, biological terrorism, and the development of an environmental health tracking network.

Historically, the importance of public health has often been recognized during or as a result of major tragedy. The attacks that occurred in the United States in 2001 are no exception. These events have raised awareness of our vulnerability and the need for emergency preparedness, the need for a flexible and sustainable public health infrastructure, and the importance of linkages between environmental exposures and health outcomes. The authors encourage the public health community, along with policymakers, to develop a national environmental health tracking system that can improve our overall

Influence of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome on resource availability in critical care medicine in the coming decade.

Information presented regards the consumption of resources in the management of critically ill patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Predictions are made about future increases in critical care services for patients with this condition. While increased need will primarily be related to an increased number of patients with AIDS, an expanded need for critical care services is also likely to result from changes in the populations at risk and in the presentation of the syndrome. In particular, the relationship between the AIDS epidemic and tuberculosis is described. The bala
