A new semi-implantable middle ear implant for sensorineural hearing loss: three-years follow-up in a pilot patient's group.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to report on the long-term follow-up of a new semi-implantable middle ear device utilized for restoration of moderate-to-severe sensorineural hearing loss in a first series of subjects. METHODS: Three subjects, affected by sensorineural hearing loss, have undergone implantation of Maxum® middle ear implant, via a transcanal approach. They all underwent an auditory assessment, paying particular attention on the pre- versus post-operative hearing levels under the unaided, best-fitted hearing aided and implant-aided conditions. The audiometric evaluation has

Cerebrospinal fluid shunting and hearing loss in patients treated for medulloblastoma.

OBJECT: Cerebrospinal fluid shunting has previously been associated with hearing loss. Although the mechanism for this is unclear, it is thought that changes in CSF pressure can affect cochlear physiology via endolymph expansion in the setting of a patent cochlear aqueduct. Patients undergoing radiation and cisplatin chemotherapy are at risk for hearing loss. The authors hypothesized that the incidence and severity of hearing loss in patients undergoing radiation and chemotherapy for medulloblastoma would be greater in those with shunts than in those without shunts. METHODS: Baseline and long

Sensorineural hearing loss may lead to dementia-related pathological changes in hippocampal neurons.

Presbycusis contributes to cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease. However, most research in this area involves clinical observations and statistical modeling, and few studies have examined the relationship between hearing loss and the molecular changes that lead to cognitive dysfunction. The present study investigated whether hearing loss contributes to dementia in the absence of aging and noise using a mouse model of severe bilateral hearing loss induced by kanamycin (1000 mg/kg) and furosemide (400 mg/kg). Immunohistochemistry, silver staining, immunofluorescence analysis, and Western bl

Hearing loss in skeletal dysplasia patients.

A hearing screening program was performed to determine the prevalence of hearing loss and abnormal tympanometry in individuals with short-stature skeletal dysplasias attending a national meeting. Behavioral audiometry, otoacoustic emission testing, and tympanometry were used to assess hearing. Failed hearing screen was defined as hearing ≥ 35 dB at one or more frequencies or by "fail" on otoacoustic emissions. One hundred ten of 112 subjects completed the screening. 58 (51.8%) were children. Seventy-three (65.2%) had achondroplasia, 34 (30.4%) had one of 11 other diagnoses, and 5(4.4%) were un

Primary amenorrhea in an 18-year-old Japanese female with sensorineural hearing loss and anosmia: a new sydrome?

This report documents a case with primary amenorrhea associated with sensorineural hearing loss and anosmia. The patient presented at 18 years of age with minimal sexual development and no prior menses. Her mother also presented late onset menarche, hearing loss and anosmia, and her father was also affected with hearing loss. A chromosome analysis of the patient showed 46, XX. Basal FSH and LH levels were in normal range, but the serum estradiol level was low. A serum estradiol elevation and follicular development were recognized after the injection of human menopausal gonadotropin. Genomic DN

[Response latency characteristics for ENT medical assessment of auditory brain stem evoked response].

A schematic description of the correlation between the various types of hearing disorders and the behaviour of auditory brain stem responses (ABR) is presented. Conductive pathology and high-frequency cochlear hearing loss prolong wave component latency due to energy loss and hair cell dysfunction. Latency is not affected in flat cochlear hearing loss. Prolonged interwave latencies between wave I and wave V indicate eighth nerve and brain stem disorders. An algorithm in the form of a flow chart was developed for location of the malfunction. Families of characteristics of wave V intensity-laten

"I think it impacts all areas of his life": Perspectives on hearing from mothers of individuals with Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Down syndrome are known to have high rates of hearing loss, but it is unclear how this impacts their ability to communicate and function in real-world environments. METHODS: Sixteen English-speaking and Spanish-speaking mothers of individuals with Down syndrome ages 6-40 years participated in individual, semi-structured interviews using a videoconferencing platform. Session transcripts were analysed using applied thematic analysis. RESULTS: Mothers described listening environments, the impact of hearing on daily life, barriers to successful listening, and strateg

Hearing loss, cognition, and risk of neurocognitive disorder: evidence from a longitudinal cohort study of older adult Australians.

Addressing midlife hearing loss could prevent up to 9% of new cases of dementia, the highest of any potentially modifiable risk factor identified in the 2017 commissioned report in The Lancet. In Australia, hearing loss is the second-most common chronic health condition in older people, affecting 74% of people aged over 70. Estimates indicate that people with severe hearing loss are up to 5-times more likely to develop dementia, but these estimates vary between studies due to methodological limitations. Using data from the Sydney Memory and Aging Study, in which 1,037 Australian men and women

Genetic Hearing Loss and Gene Therapy.

Genetic hearing loss crosses almost all the categories of hearing loss which includes the following: conductive, sensory, and neural; syndromic and nonsyndromic; congenital, progressive, and adult onset; high-frequency, low-frequency, or mixed frequency; mild or profound; and recessive, dominant, or sex-linked. Genes play a role in almost half of all cases of hearing loss but effective treatment options are very limited. Genetic hearing loss is considered to be extremely genetically heterogeneous. The advancements in genomics have been instrumental to the identification of more than 6,000 caus

Hearing sensitivity and bone mineral density in older adults: the Health, Aging and Body Composition Study.

Bone mineral density (BMD) may be associated with hearing loss in older adults. Demineralization of the cochlear capsule has been associated with hearing loss in those with Paget's disease of the bone and otosclerosis. Osteoporosis may also result in cochlear capsule demineralization. We hypothesized that lower hip BMD and lower heel ultrasound measurements would be associated with hearing loss in a population-based sample of 2,089 older black and white men and women. Bone parameters and hearing function were measured at the fourth clinical follow-up visit. Audiometric threshold testing was us

[Sensorineural impairment in the inner ear in epidemic parotitis].

During morbilli and mumps, classical forms of acquired deafness develop in childhood. The aim of the study was to investigate effects of mumps virus on cochlear function. Of 237 examined patients 71 had parotitis and 166 meningitis-meningoencephalitis. Audiometric analyses were carried out at the beginning of the treatment and after 6 months. Hearing loss above 30 dB was found in 109 patients (45.99%). Mild hearing impairment of sensorineural type was registered in the majority of patients, while total one-sided hearing loss was found in 2.53% of subjects. No correlation between clinical manif

Perilymphatic fistula and its interest to audiologists.

Forty-one patients who had sudden hearing loss associated with spontaneous perilymphatic fistllas were reviewed in this investigation. A history of physical exertion or an upper respiratory infection prior to the onset of hearing loss strongly suggests the presence of spontaneous perilymphatic fistula. However, absence of such a history does not necessarily preclude the possibility of membrane rupture. A great variation in audiologic and vestibular findings was observed. Tinnitus was present for most patients and vertigo or disequilibrium was reported by some. Findings support the need for sur

Binaural interactions in cortical area AI of cats reared with unilateral atresia of the external ear canal.

Binaural interactions were recorded in auditory cortical (AI) neurons of anesthetized adult cats that had unilateral atresias created shortly after birth by surgically ligating and cutting one external ear canal. At the time of the recording experiment, the atresia and associated debris were removed and tones were delivered to both tympanic membranes via a sealed and calibrated acoustic system. The majority of neurons recorded were in the cortex ipsilateral to the previously occluded ear. Thresholds for monaural stimulation of either the operated or unoperated ear were within normal range alth

Auditory and vestibular mouse mutants: models for human deafness.

We have shown here several examples of how hearing and vestibular impaired mouse mutants are generated and the insight that they provide in the study of auditory and vestibular function. These types of genetic studies may also lead to the identification of disease-susceptibility genes, perhaps the most critical element in presbyacusis (age-related hearing loss). Some individuals may be more prone to hearing loss with increasing age or upon exposure to severe noise, and susceptibility genes may be involved. Different inbred mice show a variety of age-related and noise-induced hearing loss that

CMV-induced Hearing Loss.

Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection is the most common fetal viral infection and contributes to about 25% of childhood hearing loss by the age of 4 years. It is the leading nongenetic cause of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Infants born to seroimmune mothers are not completely protected from SNHL, although the severity of their hearing loss may be milder than that seen in those whose mothers had a primary infection. Both direct cytopathic effects and localized inflammatory responses contribute to the pathogenesis of cytomegalovirus (CMV)-induced hearing loss. Hearing loss may be de

Distinct changes in the morphology of cortical and subcortical grey matter associated with age-related hearing loss and tinnitus in the UK Biobank participants.

Prevalence of both hearing loss and tinnitus increases with age. However, neuroimaging studies of both conditions report inconsistent changes in brain morphology likely due to small sample size and variable methodology. Structural and functional neuroimaging studies in hearing loss and tinnitus have revealed distinct neural correlates, and further replication is needed to confirm these findings. This study aims to investigate the effects of hearing loss and tinnitus on the brain morphology in a well-powered sample. We utilized self-reported hearing difficulty and tinnitus in participants with
