Ebstein's anomaly is a complex, congenital heart defect characterized by a malformation of the tricuspid valve and right side of the heart. A variety of cardiac abnormalities are associated with Ebstein's anomaly, including atrial septal defect, conduction system abnormalities, patent foramen ovale, pulmonary stenosis or atresia, and ventricular septal defect. The clinical course of a patient with Ebstein's anomaly depends on the severity of the abnormalities present. Surgical repair of Ebstein's anomaly involves repair or replacement of the tricuspid valve and repair of any associated cardiac

To our knowledge, this is the first case in the literature citing cobra head deformity of both atrial discs. A large delivery sheath with excess room possibly led to deformity in our case. This case highlights the importance of following manufacturer- recommended sheath sizes for optimal device implantation.

With advances in transcatheter treatment options, percutaneous device closure of ventricular septal defects has become a safe and practical alternative to surgical repair. While outcomes have been excellent, late complete heart bock has been documented during follow up of pediatric patients. We report a case of late complete heart block complicating percutaneous device closure of a ventricular septal defect in a 37-year-old female requiring permanent pacemaker insertion. The patient underwent transcatheter closure of an atrial and ventricular septal defect in the context of treated pulmonary h

For many years, the lesions now often described as atrioventricular septal defects were considered to represent atrioventricular canal malformations or endocardial cushion defects. It was also long recognized that patients with the so-called ostium primum defect should be included in this category. The phenotypic feature of these hearts is the presence of a common atrioventricular junction, as opposed to separate right and left atrioventricular junctions. The presence of the common atrioventricular junction underscores the associated phenotypic features, such as the presence of a trifoliate le

A patent foramen ovale (PFO) is an embryological remnant found in 27% of adults. It is a potential right-to-left intracardiac shunt. Shunting may be the result of reversal in the interatrial pressure gradient or abnormal streaming of blood in the right atrium. The pathologic consequences of right-to-left shunting include hypoxemia and paradoxical embolism. PFO may exacerbate preexisting hypoxemia or be its primary cause. Paradoxical embolism through a PFO is well documented. Its role in cryptogenic stroke remains controversial. A PFO may be detected by both invasive and noninvasive techniques.

A 3-week-old Thoroughbred colt was presented for weakness and cyanosis. A pansystolic regurgitant murmur and other physical findings suggested that the foal developed pulmonary oedema as a consequence of congenital heart disease. A large atrial septal defect, a high ventricular septal defect and dysplasia of the atrioventricular valves were visualised echocardiographically. A persistent common atrioventricular canal was observed at necropsy.

Necropsy of a 52-day-old Camborough pig revealed numerous cardiac malformations. The positional relationship of the atria, ventricles and great vessels was a mirror image type (I, L and L): inverted arrangement of the atria, with a left-sided right atrium and right-sided left atrium (situs inversus); inverted arrangement of the ventricles, with a left-sided morphological right ventricle and right-sided morphological left ventricle (L-loop); and aortic valve to the front left relative to the pulmonary valve (L-malposed). The major malformations included an ostium secundum atrial septal defect,

UNLABELLED: Supraventricular arrhythmias are often observed in patients before and after atrial septal defect repair. Although several papers report different incidences of sustained supraventricular arrhythmias, postoperative 'incisional' macroreentrant tachycardias have not been systematically investigated.
METHODS: We reviewed 136 consecutive patients (79 female, 57 male, mean age 36.8+/-17.8 years) who underwent atrial septal defect repair at our institutions between January 1990 and January 1999. Coexisting valve disease requiring surgical intervention was noted in 13 patients (9.5%). Th

The classical treatment for congenital heart defects in adult patients has been surgical correction. Since the publication of Rashkind and Gruntzig's studies, interventional cardiology approaches have been developed to treat congenital and acquired heart defects. We discuss the current applications of this form of treatment and communicate our experience with percutaneous transcatheter procedures in adult patients for pulmonary valve stenosis, aortic valve stenosis, native coarctation, postsurgical coarctation, peripheral pulmonary artery stenosis, atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defe

Development of major aortopulmonary collateral arteries are strongly associated with cyanotic congenital heart disease. However, they have rarely been reported in noncyanotic congenital heart disease. We report a rare case of a newborn originally diagnosed with an atrial septal defect, a ventricular septal defect, and pulmonary arterial hypertension who underwent complete repair. Failure to progress postoperatively lead to the delayed diagnosis of aortopulmonary collateral arteries. Percutaneous embolization and surgical ligation of aortopulmonary collateral arteries resulted in rapid recovery
