Emerging helminth zoonoses.

As our ability to recognise and diagnose human disease caused by helminth parasites has improved, so our understanding of the epidemiology and clinical manifestations of these diseases has improved. Humans can develop patent infection with a wide range of helminth parasites, whose natural host is another vertebrate. Rather than focusing on a comprehensive review of zoonotic helminth infections, this review describes in detail examples of zoonotic helminth infections that have newly appeared in human populations, or have existed but are increasing in incidence or geographic range. Examples incl

The effect of anthelmintic treatment and other management factors on the incidence of breech strike in Merino sheep.

Repeated scouring and soiling of the breech region with faeces rendered mulesed, Merino sheep susceptible to breech strike. Anthelmintic treatment of ewes before and after lambing and of lambs 6 to 8 weeks old reduced intestinal trichostrongylosis, scouring and consequent breech strike. Wether lambs tended to be more susceptible than ewe lambs and sheep grazing long pastures were struck more frequently than those on short pastures.

A comparison of parasitic helminths and arthropods from two subspecies of fox squirrels (Sciurus niger) in Florida.

The faunas of parasitic helminths and arthropods of 87 Sherman's fox squirrels (Sciurus niger shermani) and 32 Big Cypress fox squirrels (Sciurus niger avicennia) collected from Florida (USA) over a 6-yr period (1988 to 1993) were compared. One acanthocephalan, one cestode, nine nematodes, one flea, three sucking lice, three mites, one tick, and one dipteran larva were identified. Citellinema bifurcatum and Physaloptera massino were new records for Florida and Gongylonema pulchrum, Neotrombicula whartoni, and Eushoengastia diversa were new host records. Three core species of nematodes (distrib

Spatio-temporal distribution of soil-transmitted helminth infections in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: In Brazil, preventive chemotherapy targeting soil-transmitted helminthiasis is being scaled-up. Hence, spatially explicit estimates of infection risks providing information about the current situation are needed to guide interventions. Available high-resolution national model-based estimates either rely on analyses of data restricted to a given period of time, or on historical data collected over a longer period. While efforts have been made to take into account the spatial structure of the data in the modelling approach, little emphasis has been placed on the temporal dimension. …

Chronic schistosomiasis and strongyloidiasis mimicking irritable bowel syndrome over multiple decades: A case report.

Chronic infections caused by Strongyloides stercoralis and Schistosoma spp. can present with longstanding gastrointestinal symptoms that mimic irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). In this case report, we describe a patient who was misdiagnosed with IBS for several decades before receiving a definitive diagnosis of chronic helminthiasis. Treatment with first-line antihelminthics resulted in complete and sustained resolution of symptoms. We review the life cycle, epidemiology, clinical presentations, diagnosis, and management of chronic helminthiases in the context of IBS. We further discuss the impa…

OBJECTIVE: The association between diabetes and Strongyloides infection remains controversial. This study aimed to detect Strongyloides ster … for the diagnosis of S. stercoralis infection in patients with DM2 living in endemic areas for this helminthiasis.

[Ascaris lumbricoides-induced pancreatic lesion].

Ascaris lumbricoides is nematode localized in human small bowel in most cases. This nematode is capable for migration. Pancreatitis is one of the most common surgical diseases. One of the causes of this pancreatitis may be migration of Ascaris lumbricoides from small bowel through the major duodenal papilla to the pancreatic ducts. This migration is provided by complex of morphological and functional disorders of digestive system associated with this helminthiasis, as well as certain risk factors. These are previous cholecystectomy, sphincterotomy, living in endemic areas, massive Ascaris lumb…

Influence of schistosomiasis on host vaccine responses.

Schistosomiasis is a debilitating helminthiasis which commonly establishes as a chronic infection in people from endemic areas. As a potent modulator of the host immune response, the Schistosoma parasite and its associated products can directly interfere with its host's ability to mount adequate immune responses to unrelated antigens. As a result, increased attention is gathering on studies assessing the influence of helminths, particularly the causal agent of schistosomiasis, on host responsiveness to vaccines. However, to date, no consensus has been drawn regarding the influence of schistoso…

Description of the rare localization of Dirofilaria repens in human in the right inguinal lymph node.

D. repens is the causative agent of subcutaneous dirofilariasis in canine animals. In recent years, human invasion by this vector-borne helminthiasis has been recorded in many countries with temperate climate, but the localization of this helminth in the cavities of the human body is extremely rare. Cases of atypical localization of D. repens are described in the organs of the chest, cervical lymph node, in the spermatic cord and epididymis. It is usually requires differential diagnosis with neoplastic or metastatic processes. We report a case of the detection of Dirofilaria repens in the righ…

Projected benefits from integrating NTD programs in sub-Saharan Africa.

The integration of preventive chemotherapy programs (PCPs) targeting multiple neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) with similar strategic approaches offers opportunities for enhanced cost-effectiveness. To estimate the potential cost savings and health outcomes of integrated programs, the data available for five NTDs (lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, intestinal helminthiasis, schistosomiasis and trachoma) can be used to define eligible target populations, the probable overlap of at-risk populations, and the cost per person treated in stand-alone and integrated programs. If all targets for 2…

[Clinical and immunological consequences of the association between HTLV-1 and strongyloidiasis].

Strongyloidiasis is one of most important forms of helminthiasis in tropical countries and epidemiologic studies have shown the association of this parasitic disease with HTLV. It has been observed in regions where both these agents are endemic and coinfection may result in an increase in the disseminated forms of strongyloidiasis as well as recurrent strongyloidiasis. While HTLV-1 is related to a high production of IFN-gamma; and deviation of the immune response towards a Th1 response, the protection against helminths is associated with Th2 like immune response. Individuals infected with HTLV…

Endoscopic removal of Ascaris lumbricoides from the biliary tract as emergency treatment for acute suppurative cholangitis.

Ascariasis is the most common intestinal helminthiasis worldwide. Heavily infected individuals are prone to develop bowel obstruction or perforation as well as biliary disease. Nevertheless, the presence of roundworms in the biliary tree outside endemic areas is very uncommon. The migration of these worms to the biliary system can cause biliary colic, pancreatitis, or even acute suppurative cholangitis with hepatic abscesses and septicemia. We report here on 2 infants with 14 and 15 months and a 9-year-old boy who suffered from massive biliary ascariasis and who presented with acute suppurativ…

Strongyloides stercoralis: the first rodent model for uncomplicated and hyperinfective strongyloidiasis, the Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus).

Strongyloidiasis is the most common endemic helminthiasis in several of the world's industrialized nations, yet relatively little is known about its basic biology and immunobiology because a practical rodent model for the investigation of this clinically important parasitism is lacking. This study reports such a model for use in the investigation of Strongyloides stercoralis infection. Normal male gerbils infected subcutaneously with 1000 infective filariform larvae harbored moderate numbers (83.6 +/- 27.6) of adult worms at 35 days after infection, and a low-grade infection persisted for at l…
