Active dispersal of Triatoma infestans and other triatomines in the Argentinean arid Chaco before and after vector control interventions.

Peridomestic structures are considered the main sites where Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) remain and disperse, representing the first risk factor for intradomestic invasion, even after vector control activities. This study analyzed T. infestans dispersal during vector control interventions in six rural houses of the arid Chaco (La Rioja, Argentina). Flying and walking dispersers were captured during five months of two consecutive warm seasons after insecticide spraying of intra- and peridomiciles. These data were compared with previous published data in the same scenario but witho…

Two novel proteins expressed by the venom glands of Apis mellifera and Nasonia vitripennis share an ancient C1q-like domain.

An in-depth proteomic study of previously unidentified two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis spots of honey bee (Apis mellifera, Hymenoptera) venom revealed a new protein with a C1q conserved domain (C1q-VP). BlastP searching revealed a strong identity with only two proteins from other insect species: the jewel wasp, Nasonia vitripennis (Hymenoptera), and the green pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Hemiptera). In higher organisms, C1q is the first subcomponent of the classical complement pathway and constitutes a major link between innate and acquired immunity. Expression of C1q-VP …

Cut your losses: self-amputation of injured limbs increases survival.

Autotomy, self-induced limb loss, is an extreme trait observed throughout the animal kingdom; lizards drop their tails, crickets release the … xed within populations). Recently, however, we have identified a species, Narnia femorata (Insecta: Hemiptera: Coreidae), where some individuals autotomize limbs in response to injury, but some do not. This natural variation allowed us to investigate both the survival costs of retaining an injured limb and the benefits of autotomizing it. In this study, we …

Triatomine vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi: a molecular perspective based on nuclear ribosomal DNA markers.

Chagas disease (American trypanosomiasis) is mainly transmitted by blood-sucking bugs of the reduviid subfamily Triatominae (Hemiptera: Prosorrhyncha). Control strategies are directed mainly against these insect vectors, as no vaccine is available and, except in the very early stage of infection, there is no effective chemótherapy. Studies of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) will lead to major advances in our knowledge of Triatominae and their relationships to Chagas disease transmission, epidemiology and control. Analyses of complete sequences of nuclear genes coding for ribosomal ribonucleic acid…

Airborne β-caryophyllene disrupts virus-vector mutualism by priming tomato defenses.

Whiteflies pose a major threat to crops worldwide, primarily because they transmit begomoviruses with which they have evolved intricate mutualistic relationships. The mutualisms are known to exacerbate whitefly invasions and drive widespread plant virus pandemics. Yet, certain plant genotypes are able to resist both the whiteflies and the viruses and a good understanding of the underlying mechanisms could help to develop more resistant varieties. Here, we show that the viruliferous whitefly Bemisia tabaci induces an early and strong release of the sesquiterpene β-caryophyllene in cultivated to

Field resistance monitoring and nAChR α6 target validation support spinetoram as a candidate insecticide for rotation in Nilaparvata lugens resistance management.

The brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), is a major pest threatening rice production in Asia. Severe resistance to commonly used insecticides has become a major challenge for its effective control, highlighting the need for alternative insecticides. In this study, we evaluated the susceptibility of field populations of N. lugens to spinetoram and functionally validated the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) α6 subunit, Nlα6, as a molecular determinant of spinosyn susceptibility. Resistance monitoring showed that field populations remained highly susceptible to spinetoram d

Dual biotic stressors shape volatile organic compound emission patterns in pome fruit trees.

Plants release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as part of their defense mechanisms when attacked by phytopathogens and herbivores. These specific volatile emissions can help plants avoid damage. In this study, we investigated the effects of the brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), Halyomorpha halys, and the phytopathogens "Candidatus phytoplasma mali", causing apple proliferation (AP) or "Ca. P. pyri", causing pear decline (PD) on the volatile emissions from apple (Malus domestica) or pear (Pyrus communis) trees. We analyzed VOCs emitted by uninfected and infected trees exposed to male and fem

A transcription factor regulates development of a bacteria-housing eukaryotic cell through DNA damage mitigation.

Intracellular microorganisms are widespread and housed within specialized host cells called bacteriocytes in many invertebrates. Although increasing attention has been devoted to understanding bacteriocyte development, differentiation, and proliferation, the molecular mechanisms that maintain these cells remain poorly understood. We previously showed that the transcription factor Adf-1 suppresses bacteriocyte cell death in whiteflies. Here, DNA affinity purification sequencing identified Adf-1 target genes involved in diverse cellular processes and revealed the DNA damage response kinase ataxi

The effect of leafhopper saliva on volatiles in the processing of beauty tea.

The tea green leafhopper (Empoasca onukii Matsuda) damages tea plants by piercing the leaves with its needle-like mouthparts to suck sap and secrete saliva, with the affected fresh leaves considered the best raw material for producing beauty tea. To investigate the role of leafhopper saliva in the formation of aroma quality in beauty tea, this study extracted leafhopper saliva and applied them to field-grown tea plants. The treated leaves were compared with fresh leaves from unaffected plants, as well as those with low and high leafhopper damage. The study analyzed the dynamic changes in aroma

Investigating the alleviatory ability of bio-synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles from Sargassum ilicifolium (Turner) C. Agardh on the tomato plants exposed to whitefly infestation.

Green nanoparticle synthesis presents a sustainable agricultural approach that reduces dependence on chemical pesticides while promoting environmental sustainability. The whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum), a major sap-sucking pest of tomato plants, causes significant yield losses worldwide. In this study, we developed an eco-friendly management strategy using zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) biosynthesized from the brown seaweed Sargassum ilicifolium, a rich source of bioactive compounds. The nanosized ZnO-NPs (5-65 nm) were applied as a foliar spray and effectively mitigated whitefly-ind

Complementarity between Orius predators improves control of foliar and flower pests.

BACKGROUND: Multispecies natural enemy assemblages may be more successful in suppressing herbivorous pests compared to low-diversity communities, especially when natural enemies complement each other regarding the niches they exploit. Orius predatory bugs are omnivorous biological control agents used in horticulture, and are widely associated with the control of flower thrips. However, species within the Orius genus may differ significantly in biological characteristics, such as size, thermal development requirements, induction of diapause, degree of omnivory, and within-plant distribution. In

Membrane association of importin α facilitates viral entry into salivary gland cells of vector insects.

The importin α family belongs to the conserved nuclear transport pathway in eukaryotes. However, the biological functions of importin α in the plasma membrane are still elusive. Here, we report that importin α, as a plasma membrane-associated protein, is exploited by the rice stripe virus (RSV) to enter vector insect cells, especially salivary gland cells. When the expression of three importin α genes was simultaneously knocked down, few virions entered the salivary glands of the small brown planthopper, Laodelphax striatellus Through hemocoel inoculation of virions, only importin α2 was found

Resistance of rice to insect pests mediated by suppression of serotonin biosynthesis.

Rice is one of the world's most important foods, but its production suffers from insect pests, causing losses of billions of dollars, and extensive use of environmentally damaging pesticides for their control1,2. However, the molecular mechanisms of insect resistance remain elusive. Although a few resistance genes for planthopper have been cloned, no rice germplasm is resistant to stem borers. Here, we report that biosynthesis of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in mammals3, is induced by insect infestation in rice, and its suppression confers resistance to planthoppers and stem borers, the two m

Prediction of insect pest distribution as influenced by elevation: Combining field observations and temperature-dependent development models for the coffee stink bug, Antestiopsis thunbergii (Gmelin).

The antestia bug, Antestiopsis thunbergii (Gmelin 1790) is a major pest of Arabica coffee in Africa. The bug prefers coffee at the highest elevations, contrary to other major pests. The objectives of this study were to describe the relationship between A. thunbergii populations and elevation, to elucidate this relationship using our knowledge of the pest thermal biology and to predict the pest distribution under climate warming. Antestiopsis thunbergii population density was assessed in 24 coffee farms located along a transect delimited across an elevation gradient in the range 1000-1700 m asl

Warming and drought combine to increase pest insect fitness on urban trees.

Urban habitats are characterized by impervious surfaces, which increase temperatures and reduce water availability to plants. The effects of these conditions on herbivorous insects are not well understood, but may provide insight into future conditions. Three primary hypotheses have been proposed to explain why multiple herbivorous arthropods are more abundant and damaging in cities, and support has been found for each. First, less complex vegetation may reduce biological control of pests. Second, plant stress can increase plant quality for pests. And third, urban warming can directly increase

Mechanisms of resistance to insecticides targeting RDL GABA receptors in planthoppers.

Lindane and cyclodienes, such as dieldrin and α-endosulfan, represent the first generation of noncompetitive antagonists (NCAs) against the insect RDL GABA receptor. It has been reported that A2'S and A2'G mutations in the membrane-spanning region M2 of the RDL GABA receptor confer resistance to lindane and cyclodienes. Fipronil is a second-generation NCA, but A2'S and A2'G mutations provide a low level of cross-resistance to fipronil. Moreover, a novel A2'N mutation that confers fipronil resistance was found in M2 of the RDL GABA receptors from fipronil-resistant planthoppers in the heterozyg

Phloem-exudate proteome analysis of response to insect brown plant-hopper in rice.

Brown plant-hopper (Nilaparvata lugens Stål, BPH), one of the most devastating agricultural insect pests of rice throughout Asia, ingests nutrients from rice sieve tubes and causes a dramatic yield loss. Planting resistant variety is an efficient and economical way to control this pest. Understanding the mechanisms of host resistance is extremely valuable for molecular design of resistant rice variety. Here, we used an iTRAQ-based quantitative proteomics approach to perform analysis of protein expression profiles in the phloem exudates of BPH-resistant and susceptible rice plants following BPH

Inter-plant vibrational communication in a leafhopper insect.

Vibrational communication is one of the least understood channels of communication. Most studies have focused on the role of substrate-borne signals in insect mating behavior, where a male and a female establish a stereotyped duet that enables partner recognition and localization. While the effective communication range of substrate-borne signals may be up to several meters, it is generally accepted that insect vibrational communication is limited to a continuous substrate. Until now, interplant communication in absence of physical contact between plants has never been demonstrated in a vibrat

Maize and oat antixenosis and antibiosis against Delphacodes kuscheli (Homoptera: Delphacidae), vector of "Mal de Rio Cuarto" of maize in Argentina.

"Mal de Rio Cuarto" (MRC) is the most important virus disease of maize, Zea mays L., in Argentina. Several maize lines show different levels of resistance to MRC in the field; however, no studies have been conducted to investigate resistance mechanisms against its insect vector, Delphacodes kuscheli Fennah (Homoptera: Delphacidae). Oat, Avena spp., is the main overwintering host of D. kuscheli and main source of populations that infest maize. Although oat varieties resistant to the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) (Homoptera: Aphididae) are commercially available, their effect on D. kus
