Identification of potential risk factors for lower limb injuries in female team-sport athletes: a prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this prospective cohort study was to assess the associations between lower limb injuries in female team-sport athletes and a number of factors. The potential risk factors explored included (1) lower limb strength, (2) history of life-event stress, (3) family history of ACL injuries, (4) menstrual history, and (5) history of oral contraception use. METHODS: One hundred and thirty-five female athletes aged between 14 and 31 years (mean: 18.8 ± 3.6 years) from rugby union (n = 47), soccer (n = 72), and netball (n = 16) volunteered to participate in this study. Comparison of landing maneuvers between male and female college volleyball players.

OBJECTIVE: To compare differences in kinematic and kinetic parameters of knee, hip and ankle joints between male and female college volleyball players. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. BACKGROUND: Landing injuries, which usually involve anterior cruciate ligament injuries, are common in volleyball with a higher incidence in females. Landing preferences of both male and female players may provide additional background about the mechanisms contributing to the anterior cruciate ligament injuries. METHODS: Eight female and eight male college volleyball players performed spike and block landings f

Classification of posterior fracture dislocation of the hip joint: a modification of the Thompsen Epstein classification.

The purpose of this paper was to describe a classification of posterior fracture dislocations of the hip joint, which would highlight the important aspects of managing this injury and more closely correlate with the prognosis. During the period from July 1994 to September 1997, the senior author operated on 60 posterior fracture dislocations of the hip joint. The results of the surgery were scored according to our ability to accurately anatomically reconstruct the acetabulum. We found that the degree of comminution was a greater determent of whether we could achieve an anatomical reconstructio

Groin injuries in athletes.

Groin injuries comprise 2 to 5 percent of all sports injuries. Early diagnosis and proper treatment are important to prevent these injuries from becoming chronic and potentially career-limiting. Adductor strains and osteitis pubis are the most common musculoskeletal causes of groin pain in athletes. These two conditions are often difficult to distinguish. Other etiologies of groin pain include sports hernia, groin disruption, iliopsoas bursitis, stress fractures, avulsion fractures, nerve compression and snapping hip syndrome.

Lower-limb adaptation during squatting after isolated posterior cruciate ligament injuries.

BACKGROUND: While many studies point out that posterior cruciate ligament plays an important role in squatting, not many, if any, have looked into knee kinematics or kinetics for isolated posterior cruciate ligament injuries. This study explores lower-limb adaptation during squatting for asymptomatic patients with isolated chronic posterior cruciate ligament injuries. METHODS: Thirteen research subjects or test participants with isolated chronic posterior cruciate ligament injuries were recruited to analyze the kinematics and kinetics on both sides of their hip, knees and ankle joints during

Is posterior hip instability associated with cam and pincer deformity?

BACKGROUND: Posterior hip instability is an increasingly recognized injury in athletes; however, the function of patients after these injuries and an understanding of the pathoanatomy and underlying mechanism are currently unclear. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We determined (1) the function of patients after these hip injuries using validated, self-reported outcome instruments and (2) the specific pathoanatomy sustained in these events to better understand the mechanism of posterior hip instability. METHODS: We reviewed the records of all 22 athletes presenting to our clinics with a posterior acetabu…

Traumatic asymmetrical bilateral hip dislocation: A rare case report.

Traumatic bilateral hip dislocation is a rare phenomenon. Simultaneous traumatic asymmetrical bilateral hip dislocation is even more unusual. There is no report in the literature regarding the mechanism of injury in tramcar squeezing. A 49-year-old male who had a serious tramcar accident and developed asymmetric bilateral hip dislocations (left posterior, right anterior) combined with fracture of left acetabulum and multiple injuries was admitted. Right hip dislocation was treated with manual reduction. Left hip dislocation, fracture of acetabulum and bilateral pubis, and open wound of left th

Preoperative MRI and Intraoperative Arthroscopic Evaluation of Chondral Pathology at the Hip Chondrolabral Junction.

BACKGROUND: Previous literature has found that hip magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has lower accuracy and reliability in preoperative diagnosis of cartilage and labral pathology compared with knee and shoulder MRI. This is a notable limitation, as MRI findings play a significant role in the determination for surgical intervention in femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) and aid in surgical planning, intraoperative cartilage management, and in postoperative rehabilitation expectations. INDICATIONS: Hip arthroscopy is most commonly utilized for the treatment of FAIS and associated labra

Spontaneous fracture of the femoral neck in preexisting avascular necrosis of femoral head in sickle cell disease.

The presence of anterior hip dislocation along with contralateral posterior hip dislocation in the absence of other major traumas is a distinctly rare injury pattern. We report such a case, along with a review of previous cases. A 40-year-old male patient after motorcycle skidding had posterior dislocation of the left hip and anterior dislocation of the right one without other associated injuries. The patient underwent successful closed reduction of both hips. The clinical course and follow-up assessment of the patient was uneventful.

Imaging in trauma of the pelvis and hip region.

Trauma of the pelvis and the hip are frequent and the most common lesions are fractures and dislocations. There are other traumatic lesions around the pelvis, including epiphysiolysis of the femoral head and apophysiolysis of the common muscle insertions around the hip. Cartilaginous lesions and some less frequent fractures are also illustrated in this article. We are not claiming to give a complete overview of traumatic injuries to the pelvis and the hip, but want to illustrate some more and some less frequent lesions.

Initial treatment of traumatic hip dislocations in the adult.

The initial treatment of traumatic hip dislocations is critical to successful treatment of this injury. It generally is agreed that prompt reduction with the patient under anesthesia or sedation is required. Delay in reduction of posterior hip dislocations is associated with avascular necrosis of the hip. Occasionally the hip dislocation will be irreducible. Various methods to reduce hip dislocations have been described in the literature. The superiority of one particular technique has not been shown and the choice of reduction maneuver must be tailored to the condition of the patient. Traumat

Acetabular depression fracture accompanying posterior fracture dislocation of the hip.

The acetabular depression fracture is defined as a rotated, impacted, osteocartilaginous fragment of the posteromedial acetabulum that occurs in conjunction with a posterior fracture dislocation of the hip. Displacement of this fracture fragment creates incongruity of the posterior acetabular articular surface and the potential for hip joint instability. A retrospective review of hip dislocations over a 3-year period disclosed 75 posterior fracture dislocations of the hip. A total of 71 hips had computerized tomography (CT) scanning after successful closed reduction of the dislocation. Of the
