One of the frequently reported side effects following epidural morphine administration in clinical trials is a generalized pruritus of several hours duration. Since histamine can elicit pruritus we investigated the plasma histamine levels following epidurally applied morphine (0.05 mg/kg) in 10 urological patients. A histidine-containing agar medium has been devised for quantitative detection of histamine-producing bacteria that are alleged to be associated with scombroid fish poisoning outbreaks. The responsible bacteria produce a marked pH change in the agar, with attendant color change of pH indicator adjacent to the colonies, thus facilitating their recognition. Proteus morganii and Klebsiella pneumoniae were the two most common histidine-decarboxylating species isolated from scombroid fish and mahi mahi.

In unanesthetized cats, continuous intravenous infusion of aspirin for 36 hr did not produce gastric ulcers when given alone but did when combined with 160 microgram kg-1 hr-1 of histamine-2HCl intravenously. The ulcers were mainly antral in location. The incidence and severity of ulcers increased with duration of the infusion up to 36 hr and with dose of aspirin up to 4 mg kg-1 hr-1. Severe histamine mediated reactions to intravenous drugs used in anaesthesia may occur as a result of anaphylactic and anaphylactoid reactions. The incidence is rare, but appears to be increasing.
