PURPOSE: A case of linear IgA disease is reported to alert ophthalmologists and physicians to this unusual cause of chronic cicatrizing conjunctivitis.
METHODS: Clinical records of a patient suffering from linear IgA disease were reviewed.
RESULTS: A 65-year-old woman with a complicated medical history experienced rapidly progressive chronic cicatrizing conjunctivitis leading to corneal perforation. Undiagnosed gingivitis and palatal ulceration had been present for 5 years prior to the onset of ocular symptoms and vitamin C deficiency had followed the consequent dietary restrictions. A diagn

A young woman developed Hodgkin's disease (nodular sclerosis) in pregnancy and gave birth to a boy who developed common variable immunodeficiency. Initially there was normal IgG with low IgA and IgM, and antibody deficiency. IgG levels fell progressively over 4 years. Cellular immunity was normal. We suggest that this is a further family with immune deficiency presenting with common variable immunodeficiency and lymphoid malignancy.

Selective IgM deficiency (SIgMD) and IgA MGUS in a young woman are two rare disorders. IgA MGUS has not been described in patients with SIgMD. We present the first comprehensive analysis of various subsets of CD4+ T, CD8+ T cells, and B cells in a young woman with SIgMD and IgAλ MGUS. Analysis of B cell subsets revealed increased proportions of transitional B cells, germinal center (GC) B cells, B regulatory cells (Breg), and plasmablasts (PB), and decreased proportions of marginal zone (MZ) B cells. BAFF-R expression on both naïve and memory B cells was increased. CD4+ and CD8+ effector memor

Impairments in intestinal barrier function, epithelial mucins, and tight junction proteins have been reported to be associated with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. Prebiotic fructo-oligosaccharides restore balance in the gastrointestinal microbiome. This study was conducted to determine the effects of dietary fructo-oligosaccharides on intestinal barrier function and steatohepatitis in methionine-choline-deficient mice. Three groups of 12-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were studied for 3 weeks; specifically, mice were fed a methionine-choline-deficient diet, a methionine-choline-deficient diet plus

Anaphylactic reactions are a known complication in some IgA-deficient patients receiving blood or plasma transfusions. It is of particular interest that anaphylaxis has been observed in patients with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) who are receiving intravenous gammaglobulin (IVIG), and in that, although these patients have an impaired response to common vaccines, they retain the ability to produce autoantibodies. In this study, we review IgA antibodies (both IgG- and IgE-mediated reactions) in patients with CVID and hypogammaglobulinemia, anaphylaxis in antibody immunodeficient patien

OBJECTIVE: Celiac disease is frequently diagnosed in patients with nonspecific abdominal symptoms. Therefore, highly sensitive, specific, and simple noninvasive screening tests are needed.
METHODS: This study compared the usefulness of IgG- and IgA-antigliadin antibodies, IgA-endomysial antibodies, and intestinal permeability in diagnosing celiac disease in 102 adult patients with nonspecific abdominal symptoms. In addition, all patients underwent small bowel biopsy as a gold standard for the diagnosis of celiac disease.
RESULTS: Forty-nine patients were ultimately diagnosed as having celiac

Humoral immune response was evaluated in children with vitamin A deficiency. The percentage of B lymphocytes and the initial levels of plasma IgA, IgG and IgM were normal. Two weeks after the immunisation with diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, there was a marked increase in the antibody titers. There were no significant differences between the deficient and the normal children. The results indicate that the antibody production is not altered in children with vitamin A deficiency.

Eighty percent of antibody secreting cells (ASCs) are found in the intestine, where they produce grams of immunoglobulin (Ig) A daily. immunoglobulin A is actively transcytosed into the lumen, where it plays a critical role in modulating the gut microbiota. Although loss of immune tolerance to bacterial antigens is the likely trigger of the dysregulated immune response that characterizes inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), little effort has been placed on understanding the interface between B cells, IgA, and the microbiota during initiation or progression of disease. This may be in part due to t

We report a case of HAM/TSP presenting with short stature, mental retardation, skin eruptions, uterine and ovarian hypogenesis and nephropathy. Skin erythema was noted since from the age of three years old and spasticity of lower extremities from elementary school age. Serum calcium level showed 4.1 mEq/l. Recombinant human PTH infusion resulted in no response of phosphate excretion. The persistent proteinuria prompted renal needle biopsy, which revealed IgA and C1q deposits in glomerular mesangium. A diagnosis of pseudohypoparathyroidism and IgA nephropathy was entertained. This patient with

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In a previous study, we described elevated anti-Anisakis IgG levels in septic patients in relation to disease severity. In this study, our objective was to analyze the evolution of anti-Anisakis immunoglobulins in septic patients during hospital admission and their association with αβ and γδ T cell subsets.
METHODS: We recruited 80 subjects: 40 patients with sepsis and 40 controls. αβ and γδ T cells were analyzed using flow cytometry. Apoptosis was also assessed, and anti-Anisakis antibodies were measured by ELISA in the sera of patients with sepsis and controls.

Ring chromosome 18 has a highly variable phenotype, depending on the extent of distal arm deletions. It is most commonly presented as a combination of 18p- and distal 18q- syndrome. IgA deficiency and autoimmune diseases have been previously described in these patients. Seven cases of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) have been reported. Here we report the first case of late onset rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in a 32 year old Dominican woman with hypothyroidism, vitiligo, IgA deficiency, interstitial lung disease (ILD), cystic bronchiectasis, and features consistent with ringed 18, 18p- and dis…

Ataxia telangiectasia (AT) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by progressive cerebellar ataxia, oculocutaneous telangiectasias … ropathy and spinal atrophy. On the other hand, telangiectasias, recurrent infections, malignancies, IgA deficiency, or other immunological abnormalities were not present. This illustrates that the clinical picture of AT is broad and nonspecific, and highlights the diagnostic value of cytogenetic analysis and studies of radioresistance of DNA synthesis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Poly-IgA immune complex formation and glomerular deposition play a key role in IgA nephropathy. Our study sought to develop a new methodology for one-step serologic detection of poly-IgA levels.
DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS: A novel ELISA method using recombinant CD89 as a "capturing" probe was established for detecting poly-IgA immune complex in plasma. We applied semiquantitative measurements of these poly-IgA indices in patients recruited at Peking University First Hospital who had IgA nephropathy or other kidney disease types, as compared with h

Plasma cell gingivitis (PCG), an infrequent benign inflammatory condition of unknown etiology, is a type of plasma cell orificial mucositis, which includes a wide spectrum of conditions. We present the case of a 13-year-old girl who had PCG with an erythematous congestive plaque on the anterior maxillary gingiva for 4 years. Occasionally, the lesion became increasingly swollen and painful and bled. Results of a histopathologic examination showed dense plasmacytic infiltrate in the dermis, affecting the dermoepidermal border, with immunohistochemical positivity in the K and A light chains and v

In the Peyer's patches (PPs), germinal centers (GCs) are chronically induced by bacteria and are the major sites for generation of gut immunoglobulin A (IgA) immune responses. Whether follicular dendritic cells (FDCs) within the GCs directly contribute to the IgA production in PPs is unknown. We showed here that direct stimulation of FDCs by bacterial products and retinoic acid synergistically enhanced the expression of the chemokine CXCL13, the survival factor BAFF, and molecules that facilitate the secretion and activation of the cytokine TGF-beta1. A reduced production of these molecules by
